A New Low Background Laboratory in the Pyhäsalmi Mine : Towards 14C free liquid scintillator for low energy neutrino experiments

2017

A new low background laboratory in Pyhäsalmi mine in the Central Finland has been put into operation in the beginning of 2017. The laboratory operates at the depth of 1436 m (~4100 meters of water equivalent). In this paper, we present description of the laboratory’s existing facility and background conditions. In the laboratory, a series of measurements has been started where the 14C concentration is determined from several liquid scintillator samples. A dedicated setup has been designed and constructed with the aim of measuring the 14C/12C ratio smaller than 10-18 . peerReviewed

International Olympic Committee (IOC) Consensus Statement on Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport (RED-S): 2018 Update

2018

In 2014, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) published a consensus statement entitled “Beyond the Female Athlete Triad: Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport (RED-S)”. The syndrome of RED-S refers to: “impaired physiological functioning caused by relative energy deficiency, and includes but is not limited to impairments of metabolic rate, menstrual function, bone health, immunity, protein synthesis, and cardiovascular health.”

Low energy KTP laser in oral soft tissue surgery: A 52 patients clinical study

2011

Objectives: Since 1962 laser appliances have been used for soft tissues surgery of oral cavity with significant advantages compared to the traditional instruments: excellent bleeding control, possibility to avoid the use of suture, good patient compliance thanks to a decrease of intra- and post-operative discomfort and biostimulating effect. Unfortunately, the wavelengths so far used have been seen to cause, in association with an excellent ablation capacity, heat damage of the tissues that can decrease healing process and cause a greater discomfort to patients. The aim of this study was to evaluate the laser-assisted KTP laser surgery at low power in terms of characteristics of interventio…

Characterization of the ESR response of alanine dosimeters to low-energy Cu-target X-tube photons

2017

Abstract This article describes Electron Spin Resonance (ESR) response measurements of Kodak BioMax alanine films exposed to low-energy X-rays from a Cu-target tube operating at 20 kV. Commercial alanine detectors were used to ensure maximum reproducibility of the results, while the choice of a film was due the low penetration of the soft X-rays. X-ray energy spectra and fluences were determined with an innovative digital semiconductor detector system. These data were used to quantify the irradiation of the alanine films in terms of absorbed dose to water. The alanine films were found to present a stable response, highly linear with dose. To our knowledge, these data have not been previousl…

Exercise dependence, eating disorder symptoms and biomarkers of Relative Energy Deficiency in Sports (RED-S) among male endurance athletes

2019

ObjectivesTo explore associations betweenexercise dependence, eating disorder (ED) symptoms and biomarkers of Relative Energy Deficiency in Sports (RED-S) among male endurance athletes.MethodsFifty-three healthy well-trained male cyclists, triathletes and long-distance runners recruited from regional competitive sports clubs were included in this cross-sectional study. The protocol comprised the Exercise Dependence Scale (EXDS), the ED Examination Questionnaire (EDE-Q), measurements of body composition, resting metabolic rate, energy intake and expenditure and blood analysis of hormones and glucose.ResultsParticipants with higher EXDS score displayed a more negative energy balance compared …

Low Energy Gamma Ray Imager (LEGRI)

1995

The Low Energy Gamma Ray Imager (LEGRI) will be one of the three instruments carried by the first MINISAT mission. LEGRI aims to demonstrate the technological feasibility of a new generation of low energy gamma-ray telescopes with imaging, medium resolution spectroscopy and high continuum sensitivity in the 20-200 keV spectral region, based on HgI2 solid state detector technology.

Alanine films for EPR dosimetry of low-energy (1–30 keV) X-ray photons

2019

Abstract L- α -alanine has aroused considerable interest for use in radiation EPR dosimetry and has been formally accepted as a secondary standard for high-dose (kGy) and transfer dosimetry of high-energy photons and electrons. In this work, we extended the investigation of the energy response of alanine EPR films in the low energy range for X-photons (1–30 keV). Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (EPR) measurements were performed on Kodak BioMax alanine films exposed to low-energy X-rays from a Cu-, W- and Mo-targets tube operating at voltages up to 30 kV. Films were chosen because of the low penetration of the soft X-rays used. The response of alanine to low-energy X-rays was characterized e…

Development of a low-energy radioactive ion beam facility for the MARA separator

2016

A low-energy radioactive ion beam facility for the production and study of nuclei produced close to the proton drip line is under development at the Accelerator Laboratory of the University of Jyv\"askyl\"a, Finland. The facility will take advantage of the mass selectivity of the recently commissioned MARA vacuum-mode mass separator. The ions selected by MARA will be stopped and thermalised in a small-volume gas cell prior to extraction and further mass separation. The gas cell design allows for resonance laser ionisation/spectroscopy both in-gas-cell and in-gas-jet. The facility will include experimental setups allowing ion counting, mass measurement and decay spectroscopy.
