Passive sinking into the snow as possible survival strategy during the off-host stage in an insect ectoparasite

2015

Abiotic and biotic factors determine success or failure of individual organisms, populations and species. The early life stages are often the most vulnerable to heavy mortality due to environmental conditions. The deer ked (Lipoptena cervi Linnaeus, 1758) is an invasive insect ectoparasite of cervids that spends an important period of the life cycle outside host as immobile pupa. During winter, dark-coloured pupae drop off the host onto the snow, where they are exposed to environmental temperature variation and predation as long as the new snowfall provides shelter against these mortality factors. The other possible option is to passively sink into the snow, which is aided by morphology of …

Temperature effect on solubility of aroma compounds in various aqueous solutions

2005

International audience; Solubility of nine aroma compounds (methyl ketones, ethyl esters, aldehyde and alcohol) in various aqueous solutions was measured by the mutual solubility method from -10 to +10degreesC. Influence of both, the nature (carbohydrates and polyols) and the substrate concentration (from 0 to 57.5g/100g) on aroma solubility in aqueous solutions was studied. Aroma solubility in water decreased when aroma hydrophobicity increased. Aroma solubility in various aqueous solutions decreased when substrate concentration increased; their solubility was higher in polyols solutions than in polysaccharides ones. Temperature effect on aroma solubility showed a noncontinuous evolution f…

THERMOREGULATION CONSTRAINS EFFECTIVE WARNING SIGNAL EXPRESSION

2009

Evolution of conspicuous signals may be constrained if animal coloration has nonsignaling as well as signaling functions. In aposematic wood tiger moth (Parasemia plantaginis) larvae, the size of a warning signal (orange patch on black body) varies phenotypically and genetically. Although a large warning signal is favored as an antipredator defense, we hypothesized that thermoregulation may constrain the signal size in colder habitats. To test this hypothesis, we conducted a factorial rearing experiment with two selection lines for larval coloration (small and large signal) and with two temperature manipulations (high and low temperature environment). Temperature constrained the size and br…

Production of soluble eukaryotic recombinant proteins in E. coli is favoured in early log-phase cultures induced at low temperature

2013

Abstract Background Producing recombinant plant proteins expressed in Escherichia coli produce in high yields and in a soluble and functional form can be difficult. Under overexpression conditions, proteins frequently accumulate as insoluble aggregates (inclusion bodies) within the producing bacteria. We evaluated how the initial culture density, temperature and duration of the expression stage affect the production of some eukaryotic enzymes in E. coli. Findings A high yield of active soluble proteins was obtained by combining early-log phase cultures and low temperatures for protein induction. When IPTG was added at OD600 = 0.1 and cultures were maintained at 4°C for 48-72 h, the soluble …

Low temperature heat capacity of phononic crystal membranes

2016

Phononic crystal (PnC) membranes are a promising solution to improve sensitivity of bolometric sensor devices operating at low temperatures. Previous work has concentrated only on tuning thermal conductance, but significant changes to the heat capacity are also expected due to the modification of the phonon modes. Here, we calculate the area-specific heat capacity for thin (37.5 - 300 nm) silicon and silicon nitride PnC membranes with cylindrical hole patterns of varying period, in the temperature range 1 - 350 mK. We compare the results to two- and three-dimensional Debye models, as the 3D Debye model is known to give an accurate estimate for the low-temperature heat capacity of a bulk sam…

Evolution of intermolecular contacts with temperature and pressure in bromoethane and iodoethane – a comparative study

2022

At ambient conditions two liquids, bromoethane, C2H5Br (MBE, m.p. 154.6 K) and iodoethane, C2H5I (MIE, m.p. 162.1 K), have been crystallized under both isobaric and isochoric conditions using in situ low-temperature and high-pressure techniques. The single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies, supported by the isothermal compressibility and isobaric differential scanning calorimetry measurements, allowed the monitoring and analysis at low temperature and high pressure of the effects of externally induced changes in MBE and MIE. The monoclinic MBE and MIE crystals are found to be isostructural. They are stable, in the investigated regimes, i.e. down to 100 K/0.1 MPa and up to ∼295 K/3.7 GPa, …

Al2O3 ALD films grown using TMA + rare isotope 2H216O and 1H218O precursors

2021

In this work hydrogen and oxygen migration and exchange reactions in the atomic layer deposited (ALD) Al2O3 thin films were studied together with hydrogen incorporation by varying deposition parameters. Al2O3 films deposited at low temperatures can contain more than 20 at. % of hydrogen. Both higher temperature and longer purge length decrease the hydrogen and carbon concentrations significantly. In order to track the hydrogen and oxygen movement in the films, heavy water (2H216O) and oxygen-18 enriched water (1H218O) were used as precursors in combination with trimethylaluminium (TMA). Different isotopes of the same element were quantified by means of time-of-flight elastic recoil detectio…
