Improvement of the mechanical properties of photo-oxidized films after recycling

Mechanical recycling of post-consumer plastics gives rise, in most cases, to secondary materials with mechanical properties worse than those of the reclaimed polymer. This is mostly due to the thermomechanical treatment undergone during the melt reprocessing operations. In this work, low density polyethylene films have been photo-oxidized in artificial accelerated ageing conditions and then the brittle films have been melt reprocessed. It is shown that the secondary material, after reprocessing, shows mechanical properties, in particular elongation at break, better than those of the photo-oxidized films. Abstract The aim of this work was to determine some relevant rheological parameters of polymer/clay systems using mixing torque and mixing speed data obtained during processing in an internal mixer. The method used was originally proposed by Marquez et al. for monophase polymers, and is here applied to polymer/clay systems for the first time. Several clay-containing composites based on different polymer matrices (i.e., LDPE, HDPE, PA6, EVA) were used to verify the effectiveness of the method for measuring the flow curves of these polymer/clay systems. This work contributes to the study of aroma transfers through edible and plastic packaging films. Permeability, sorption, and diffusivity of three methyl ketones (2-heptanone, 2-octanone, and 2-nonanone) in and through low-density polyethylene and methylcellulose-based edible films have been determined. Permeability was measured using a dynamic method coupled with a gas chromatograph. The methyl ketone permeability of polyethylene films mainly depends on diffusivity of the penetrant in the polymer. Crystallization kinetics of LDPE/Ny6 blends

The crystallization behaviour of low density polyethylene/nylon 6 blends has been investigated as a function of the composition. The melting points of the polymers are almost uninfluenced by the presence of the other homopolymers except for blends with a nylon content of 75–90%. Blends with 10% nylon content do not exhibit the crystallization peak during the cooling step probably because of the low concentration and high viscosity of the low density polyethylene matrix. The crystallinity degree of the polyethylene is independent of the composition, while some variations are shown by the polyamide. Thermo-Mechanical Degradation of LDPE-Based Nanocomposites

Thermo-mechanical degradation of LDPE-based nanocomposites was studied by mainly investigating the rheological properties. For all of the investigated processing conditions, the viscosity of the nanocomposites was higher than that of the pure-LDPE matrix, but on increasing the severity of the mixing conditions, the difference between the viscosity of the nano-filled polymer and that of the pure LDPE decreased. The X-ray traces of the nanocomposites suggest that intercalation has been achieved during the melt, when less-severe processing conditions were used. A study was made on the effect of small amounts of organically modified clay on the morphology and mechanical properties of blends of low-density polyethylene and polyamide 11 at different compositions. The influence of the filler on the blend morphology was investigated using wide angle X-ray diffractometry, scanning and transmission electron microscopy and selective extraction experiments. Abstract Ageing due to gamma radiation of a low density polyethylene at various dose rates and temperatures is studied; the effect of thermal treatment only is also considered. The modifications induced in the molecular and crystallinity behaviour of the polymer are investigated by means of gel extraction, measurements of intrinsic viscosity and thermal analysis. Results indicate the occurrence of both crosslinking and oxidative degradation; the extent of the latter increases on decreasing the irradiation dose rate and on increasing the irradiation temperature.
