Modular reorganization of gait in chronic but not in artificial knee joint constraint

2021

It is currently unknown if modular reorganization does occur if not the central nervous system, but the musculoskeletal system is affected. The aims of this study were to investigate 1) the effects of an artificial knee joint constraint on the modular organization of gait in healthy subjects; and 2) the differences in modular organization between healthy subjects with an artificial knee joint constraint and people with a similar but chronic knee joint constraint. Eleven healthy subjects and eight people with a chronic knee joint constraint walked overground at 1 m/s. The healthy subjects also walked with a constraint limiting knee joint movement to 20_. The total variance accounted (tVAF) f…

Estimating Lower Limb Skeletal Loading

2011

Osteoporosis, accidents and subsequent bone fractures cause suffering on an individual level, as well as an economical burden to the society (Ortiz-Luna et al., 2009; Stevens & Olson, 2000). It has been estimated that, in Finland alone, between 30,000 to 40,000 osteoporosis-related fractures occur annually and that 400,000 Finnish people have osteoporosis (Duodecim, 2008). There are a few potential ways of preventing bone fracture, i.e. strengthening bones and/or preventing falls (Ortiz-Luna et al., 2009; Stevens & Olson, 2000). In order to withstand prevalent loading without breaking; while remaining relatively light in weight to allow for locomotion, bones have the ability to adapt their …

The ultrastructure of articular cartilage of the chicken's knee joint

1993

The articular cartilage and synovial membrane of immature and mature chicken knee joints were studied by light, scanning and transmission microscopy. The findings differed from human articular cartilage and we conclude that the chicken knee joint is not suitable as a model for human joint degeneration.

Revealing the unique features of each individual’s muscle activation signatures

2020

AbstractThere is growing evidence that each individual has unique movement patterns, or signatures. The exact origin of these movement signatures however, remains unknown. We developed an approach that can identify individual muscle activation signatures during two locomotor tasks (walking and pedalling). A linear Support Vector Machine was used to classify 78 participants based on their electromyographic (EMG) patterns measured on eight lower limb muscles. To provide insight into decision making by the machine learning classification model, a Layer-wise Relevance Propagation (LRP) approach was implemented. This enabled the model predictions to be decomposed into relevance scores for each i…

Persistence of low back pain reporting among a cohort of employees in a metal corporation: A study with 5-, 10-, and 28-year follow-ups

2005

Low back pain (LBP) is a common symptom among adults but little is known about its persistence over time in defined populations. The aim of this study was to examine the persistence of LBP among a cohort of industrial employees studied in four successive surveys during a total of 28 years. Cross-tabulations and logistic regression was used to estimate the interdependence of LBP occurrence at the surveys. At baseline, 54% of the subjects reported local LBP and 25% LBP radiating to the lower limb(s). Persistent or recurrent LBP was common. Of those with LBP at baseline, 75, 73, and 88% reported it also at the 5-, 10- or 28-year follow-up, respectively. Of those with radiating pain, 66, 65, an…

A Simple Multibody Dynamic Model of Cross-Country Ski-Skating

2013

The purpose of this paper is to present the development of a simple multibody dynamic model matching the observed movements of the center of mass of a skier performing the skating technique in cross-country skiing. The formulation of the equation of motion was made using the Euler–Lagrange equations applied to a multibody tree-type system in three dimensions. The description of the lower limb of the skier and the ski was completed by employing three bodies, one representing the ski, and two representing the natural movements of the leg of the skier. This simple model is able to show an approximation of the movement of the center of mass of the skier and its velocity behavior allowing to stu…

SmartLeg: An intelligent active robotic prosthesis for lower-limb amputees

2011

In recent years, there has been a worldwide interest in improvement of mobility of people with lower limb amputation. In spite of significant development of new technologies during the last decade, commercial below-knee and above-knee prostheses are still energetically passive devices. However, many locomotive functions, like walking up stairs and slopes, need significant power in knee and ankle joints. The additional power for doing previously mentioned activities needs to be achieved by means of external energy sources, which should be integral prosthetic components. This paper presents preliminary investigations towards an active robotic prosthesis that could potentially enable people wi…

A Comparison of Anthropometric and Training Characteristics between Female and Male Half-Marathoners and the Relationship to Race Time.

2013

Purpose Lower limb skin-fold thicknesses have been differentially associated with sex in elite runners. Front thigh and medial calf skin-fold appear to be related to 1,500m and 10,000m time in men but 400m time in women. The aim of the present study was to compare anthropometric and training characteristics in recreational female and male half-marathoners. Methods The association between both anthropometry and training characteristics and race time was investigated in 83 female and 147 male recreational half marathoners using bi- and multi-variate analyses. Results In men, body fat percentage (β=0.6), running speed during training (β=-3.7), and body mass index (β=1.9) were related to half-m…
