AREE DISMESSE ED ORTI URBANI: UN “VALORE SOCIALE COMPLESSO” NELLE CITTÀ Abandoned areas and urban gardens: a "complex social value" in the cities
2015
The contribution to the welfare of citizens that urban gardens can generate represents a "social use-value". The social value of horticulture in cities can be expressed by means of an appropriate set of indicators describing the produced values. The proposed work, which is the result of an interdisciplinary collaboration, highlights the potentiality of abandoned and degraded urban areas, and intends to outline a model for the assessment of the social value generated by the introduction of "urban gardens". The proposed model can be utilised for selecting the most suitable areas for the use in question, for monitoring the effects of policies for urban gardens on urban sustainability, and for …

The cactus pear has always aroused curiosity because of its shape and its particular structural characteristics (plate and spiny clatodes, oval fruits of different colors and flowers of an enchanting beauty). This plant evocates the territory where it grows, characterized by a sub-tropical climate, which in Europe is represented by the region of Sicily, the island of the Southern Italy, that is one of the main producers in the Mediterranean area. Postharvest Application of Sulphur Dioxide Fumigation to Improve Quality and Storage Ability of "Red Globe" Grape Cultivar During Long Cold Storage
2017
Table grape cv 'Red Globe' is produced in Sicily and in other areas of Southern Italy. This produce is very appreciated by consumers, having the best rankings in the world market for exports and quality. Nevertheless, despite it is a non-climacteric fruit, table grape is very perishable, both after harvest, and during postharvest handling and cold storage. In fact, also at low temperatures, table grape is very sensitive to fungal infection (Botrytis cinerea) and other diseases, like gray mold, which is very aggressive. For this reason, a standard practice is to fumigate table grape with sulphur dioxide (SO2), after storage in chambers. The growing market request of table grape cv. 'Red Glob…
NEW VARIETIES OF DURUM WHEAT (TRITICUM DURUM DESF.) IN SICILY: EVALUATION OF GENOTYPE-ENVIRONMENT INTERACTION
2014
Durum wheat (Triticum durum Desf.) is the typical cereal crop in semi-arid Italian environments, and Sicily, is one of the regions of southern Italy where the cultivation of durum wheat is very spread. The thesis was the comparison of 14 genotypes of durum wheat located in 11 locations typical of the Sicilian cropland in the years 2006-2011. The analysis of the results has allowed to study the productive and qualitative behavior of the tested genotypes. In addition, the study of interaction genotype-environment, has allowed to verify the yield stability in quantity and the quality of the grain by the individual genotypes.
