The Cultural Roots of Risk
2017
This paper discusses the story of Mary and Roger an elderly couple who opted to buy a car, but later were pressed to sell it because they were unable to absorb the costs of insurance. The world of risks does not work in the same lines in North than South. This pieces invites the discussion to what extent risk perception is not an instrument for controlling workforce in under-developing nations. The mythologies of mobility have been formulated around life in the First World. They work as ideological devices to activate certain circuits of the economy, which in other times were relegated to peripheral positions. The industries of tourism and air travel transport millions travelers who enjoy t…
Basic structure and tax havens
2012
In this paper I argue that Rawlsian Law of People (LP) is much more useful to the debate on international distributive justice than it is commonly assumed by many leading political philosophers (Pogge, Nussbaum, Sen, Beitz, Singer). I will show: 1) that these criticisms are misleading, insofar as they do not take the concept of basic structure seriously, and they reduce LP to an instance of ethical statism or of acritical acceptance of cultural pluralism; 2) that the basic domestic structures, and the principles that govern them, depend on the law of peoples and its principles as well. Therefore it is not true that each basic structure is independent of what occurs in the international fiel…
2009
From 1774 to 1785, Naples hosted six different productions of Gluck's 'reform' operas: two of "Orfeo ed Euridice" (both in 1774, but in two different versions and venues), two of "Alceste" (in 1779 and 1785) and two of "Paride ed Elena" (in 1777 and 1779). In the first part, the article collects and discusses all the extant documents about these performances. The second part is a detailed study of the ideas of the Neapolitan theorists about Calzabigi and Gluck. The article demostrates that, even if some authors appreciated specific features of the 'reform', the Neapolitan musical culture was dominated by a more traditional operatic taste.
I viaggi di Orfeo. Musiche e musicisti intorno a Ranieri Calzabigi
2012
Jean-Jacques Rousseau e l'analisi musicale
2012

Macroeconomic Fluctuations as a Source of Luck in CEO Compensation
2010
Macroeconomic fluctuations such as interest rate and exchange rate can be considered sources of good or bad “luck” for corporate performance. Incentive effects of performance-based compensation for management may be weakened or biased by macroeconomic influences depending on the ability of management to adjust for operations. We decompose the impacts on CEO compensation to distinguish between macroeconomic (anticipated and unanticipated) and “intrinsic” sources. Total CEO compensation is measured by including options awarded or options exercised. Both measures depend strongly on variations in macro factors but the time patterns differ. The macroeconomic factors increased total awarded compe…
On double Veronese embeddings in the Grassmannian G(1,N)
2004
We classify all the embeddings of P^n in a Grassmannian of lines G(1,N) such that the composition with Pl\"ucker is given by a linear system of quadrics of P^n.

Models as Research Tools: Plücker, Klein, and Kummer Surfaces
2018
In the late summer of 1869, 20-year-old Felix Klein made his way to Berlin, where he planned to attend the renowned seminar founded by Ernst Eduard Kummer and Karl Weierstrass. Klein had already taken his doctorate in Bonn and he would soon be recognized as a leading expert on line geometry, a new approach to 3-space launched by his mentor in Bonn, Julius Plucker. Just before Plucker died in 1868, he entrusted Klein to complete the classic monograph, Neue Geometrie des Raumes gegrundet auf die Betrachtung der geraden Linie als Raumelement. Overall responsibility for this project fell to Alfred Clebsch in Gottingen, which was how Klein first came to the prestigious Georgia Augusta. There he …
