SEAFRONT Most coastal cities and towns have a seafront that is regarded as of special importance. Some are just as famous as the towns where they are found. However, assessing any urban seafront entails a reflection on the relationship between the sea and the town. In the Mediterranean, the connection between coastal towns and the sea has been a difficult and ambiguous one. The universal flood myth, which we find across cultures and in ancient legends, albeit with certain variations, attests to it. In such legends, the destruction of the world by the fury of the seas and oceans is total, save for the plants and animals of every species, as well as for a few righteous human beings. Hence, it…

Mutant HRAS as novel target for MEK and mTOR inhibitors.
2015
HRAS is a frequently mutated oncogene in cancer. However, mutant HRAS as drug target has not been investigated so far. Here, we show that mutant HRAS hyperactivates the RAS and the mTOR pathway in various cancer cell lines including lung, bladder and esophageal cancer. HRAS mutation sensitized toward growth inhibition by the MEK inhibitors AZD6244, MEK162 and PD0325901. Further, we found that MEK inhibitors induce apoptosis in mutant HRAS cell lines but not in cell lines lacking RAS mutations. In addition, knockdown of HRAS by siRNA blocked cell growth in mutant HRAS cell lines. Inhibition of the PI3K pathway alone or in combination with MEK inhibitors did not alter signaling nor had an imp…

Analysis and review of the perioperative management of COVID-19 patients in thoracic surgery.
2021
Oleic Acid-Injection in Pigs As a Model for Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome
2018
The acute respiratory distress syndrome is a relevant intensive care disease with an incidence ranging between 2.2% and 19% of intensive care unit patients. Despite treatment advances over the last decades, ARDS patients still suffer mortality rates between 35 and 40%. There is still a need for further research to improve the outcome of patients suffering from ARDS. One problem is that no single animal model can mimic the complex pathomechanism of the acute respiratory distress syndrome, but several models exist to study different parts of it. Oleic acid injection (OAI)-induced lung injury is a well-established model for studying ventilation strategies, lung mechanics and ventilation/perfus…

Nutritional Status in Aging and Lung Disease
2016
Abstract Lung diseases exert a negative impact on nutritional status, especially among older patients where aging per se is already associated with relevant changes in nutrient intake, metabolism, and body composition. Both respiratory (increased respiratory work, hypoxia, and local oxidative stress and inflammation) and nonrespiratory (sarcopenia, reduced mitochondrial biogenesis and anabolic hormones, balance of orexigenic/anorexigenic neuropeptides, and systemic inflammation and oxidative stress) contribute to the association between lung diseases and malnutrition. For these reasons, nutritional assessments are of paramount importance in older patients with lung diseases. Current evidenc…
