DPOAE‐Grams in Patients with Acute Tonal Tinnitus

2005

To investigate cochlear outer hair cell function in patients with acute tonal tinnitus and normal or near-normal hearing threshold.Prospective controlled study in an academic tertiary health center. Distortion products of otoacoustic emissions (DPOAE)-grams of 32 ears with acute tonal tinnitus and normal hearing or minimal hearing loss were compared with those of 17 healthy nontinnitus ears.Tinnitus ears exhibited relatively increased amplitudes of DPOAE at high frequencies (4-6.3 kHz) when compared with the group of healthy ears and relatively decreased DPOAE amplitudes at middle frequencies (1650-2400 Hz). Statistically significant ( P0.01) increased mean values of DPOAE amplitudes were o…

Neuromuscular and hormonal adaptations in athletes to strength training in two years.

1988

Neuromuscular and hormonal adaptations to prolonged strength training were investigated in nine elite weight lifters. The average increases occurred over the 2-yr follow-up period in the maximal neural activation (integrated electromyogram, IEMG; 4.2%, P = NS), maximal isometric leg-extension force (4.9%, P = NS), averaged concentric power index (4.1%, P = NS), total weight-lifting result (2.8%, P less than 0.05), and total mean fiber area (5.9%, P = NS) of the vastus lateralis muscle, respectively. The training period resulted in increases in the concentrations of serum testosterone from 19.8 +/- 5.3 to 25.1 +/- 5.2 nmol/l (P less than 0.05), luteinizing hormone (LH) from 8.6 +/- 0.8 to 9…

GnRH agonist administration at the time of implantation does not improve pregnancy outcome in intrauterine insemination cycles: a randomized controll…

2009

Objective To assess whether GnRH agonist administration in the luteal phase improves pregnancy outcome in intrauterine insemination (IUI) cycles. Design Single-center, randomized, single-blind, placebo-controlled trial. Setting University-affiliated infertility clinic, between February 2005 and December 2007. Patient(s) Three hundred forty-four women undergoing IUI owing to mild to moderate male factor or donor sperm indication. Intervention(s) Random administration to either a single subcutaneous injection of 0.1 mg triptorelin (group A; n = 172) 8 days after hCG administration, or solvent only (group B; n=172) at the same time. Main Outcome Measure(s) Pregnancy rate was the primary outcom…

Sudden Sensorineural Hearing Loss: Results of intratympanic steroids as salvage treatment

2012

Objective: The aim of the present study was to verify the efficacy and the safety of intratympanic dexamethasone to treat sudden sensorineural hearing loss as salvage therapy. Materials and methods: A prospective study was conducted on patients affected by idiopathic sudden hearing loss who were treated before with some systemic therapy, but without recovery of the hearing The patients able to undergo the study, but who refused salvage treatment were considered as control group. A solution of Dexamethasone 4 mg/ml was then injected through the posterior–inferior quadrant filling completely the middle ear. The follow-up in the following 6 months included an audiogram every month. Results: Th…

Treatment of idiopathic oligozoospermia with tamoxifen--a randomized controlled study.

1992

There is no conclusive evidence of the usefulness of tamoxifen in the treatment of idiopathic oligozoospermia (OAT-syndrome), as it has been used mostly in uncontrolled studies. We herein report on the controlled treatment of OAT-syndrome with tamoxifen versus placebo following a randomized design. Seventy-six men with sperm counts of 2-20 x 10(6) ml-1, sperm motility of 20-50%, and sperm morphology (abnormal cells) between 50 and 80% were involved in the study. Patients with varicocele, a history of testicular maldescent or genital inflammation were excluded. Thirty-nine patients received tamoxifen (30 mg daily), 37 patients placebo. There was a statistically significant increase in the me…

Treatment of refractory uveitis with adalimumab: a prospective multicenter study of 131 patients.

2011

To evaluate adalimumab therapy in refractory uveitis.Prospective case series.A total of 131 patients with refractory uveitis and intolerance or failure to respond to prednisone and at least 1 other systemic immunosuppressive drug participated.Patients received a 40 mg adalimumab subcutaneous injection every other week for 6 months. The associated immunosuppressants were tapered after administering 3 adalimumab injections (week 6).Degree of anterior and posterior chamber inflammation (Standardization of Uveitis Nomenclature Working Group criteria), immunosuppression load (as defined by Nussenblatt et al), visual acuity (logarithm of the minimal angle of resolution [logMAR]), and macular thic…

Bilateral maculopathy after exposure to a laser pointer: Optical coherence tomography angiography findings.

2018

Abstract Case report A 36-year-old man went to the emergency department the day after exposure to a laser pointer. Funduscopy revealed dispersed macular pigment alterations, and optical coherence tomography showed a disruption of the retinal layers. The visual acuity was counting fingers in both eyes. Nine months later, optical coherence tomography angiography showed a rarefaction in the choriocapillaris vascular flow in the area of the laser injuries. Discussion The retinal layer mainly damaged by the laser injury was the retinal pigment epithelium. However, it is suggested that the laser injury could involve tissues beyond the retinal pigment epithelium, since a rarefaction of the chorioc…

Concentrations of inhibins and activin in women undergoing stimulation with recombinant follicle-stimulating hormone for in vitro fertilization treat…

2001

To investigate the influence of human recombinant follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) on circulating serum concentrations of the ovarian proteohormones inhibin A, inhibin B, pro alpha-C, and activin A and serum levels of estradiol after down-regulation with GnRH analogue.Serum concentrations of ovarian proteohormones and estradiol.Academic clinical practice.30 women who underwent assisted reproductive techniques.Blood samples were analyzed for inhibin A, inhibin B, pro alpha-C, activin A, and estradiol during IVF treatment at points coinciding with pituitary down-regulation, stimulation with recombinant FSH, ovulatory triggering, and the luteal phase of the cycle.Activin A levels did not cha…

Prevalence of idiopathic hirsutism.

1998

Objective: To evaluate the prevalence of idiopathic hirsutism in a large population of hirsute women. Design: 588 hirsute women (mean age 24 6 1, range 15‐36 years) were evaluated as outpatients at the Department of Endocrinology of the University of Palermo, Italy. The diagnosis of idiopathic hirsutism was established in hirsute patients presenting regular ovulatory menstrual cycles and normal serum androgen levels (total testosterone, unbound testosterone and dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate). Methods: Hirsutism was calculated by the Ferriman-Gallwey-Lorenzo index. Serum androgens were evaluated in the follicular phase (days 5 or 6) and normal androgen ranges were calculated as the mean 6 2…

Does ovarian blood flow distinguish between ovulatory and anovulatory patients with polycystic ovary syndrome?

2003

The purpose of this study was to determine whether parameters of ovarian blood flow distinguish between women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) who ovulate and those who are anovulatory. This was a prospectively enrolled trial, carried out as a cross-sectional comparison of 12 ovulatory patients with PCOS and 20 matched subjects with classic PCOS and 10 healthy control subjects. Hormonal parameters and ovarian blood flow by color flow Doppler imaging were obtained in the early follicular phase.Characteristic elevations in luteinizing hormone (LH) and androgens were found in both groups with PCOS compared with control groups. Women with anovulatory PCOS had high insulin levels and lower Q…
