Cultural policy regimes and arts councils. Thelongue duréeperspective, birth of the state, religious trajectories and national cultural policies
2021
The cultural policy orientation of European countries has usually been interpreted in the light of political ideological factors or the model of the welfare state. However, while these dimensions e...
Paradoxes of Mentoring: An Ethnographic Study of a Mentoring Programme for Highly-educated Women with Migrant Backgrounds
2019
This article explores paradoxes that emerge in the mentoring of highly-educated, female, foreign-born job-seekers in Finland. Theoretically, the study is linked to the growing body of research scrutinising the integration or discrimination of migrants in working life. It analyses cultural practices and ideas that are visible and affect the mentoring interaction. On a more practical level, the paper determines how the mentors and mentees experience the mentoring, and how intercultural mentoring could be improved in order to promote mentees’ employment. The article is based on ethnography and 11 semi-structured interviews. Two major paradoxes and their links to cultural meanings were identifi…
Thermische Diels-Alder-Reaktionen mitN-(2-Alkenoyl)-(S)-prolinestern als chiralen Dienophilen in organischen und wäßrigen Reaktionsmedien
1990
Thermal Diels-Alder Reactions with N-(2-Alkenoyl)-(S)-proline Esters as Chiral Dienophiles Cyclopentadiene reacts with N-acryloyl-(S)-proline benzyl and allyl ester in toluene at 0°C to give the bicycloheptene-carboxylic acid amides with a stereoselection of (2S):(2R) = 81:19. In the reactions with the N,N′-fumaroylbis(proline esters) the cycloadducts are formed in high yields and with isomer ratios of up to 97:3. The absolute configuration of N,N′-〈(1R,2R,3R,4S)-bicyclo[2.2.1]hept-5-ene-2,3-diyldicarbonyl〉bis-[(S)-proline benzyl ester] (6 a) has been determined by an X-ray analysis. In the reactions of the acrylamides with cyclopentadiene and of the fumaramides with cyclopentadiene, isopre…
Artichoke, Cynarin and Cyanidin Downregulate the Expression of Inducible Nitric Oxide Synthase in Human Coronary Smooth Muscle Cells
2014
Artichoke (Cynara scolymus L.) is one of the world’s oldest medicinal plants with multiple health benefits. We have previously shown that artichoke leaf extracts and artichoke flavonoids upregulate the gene expression of endothelial-type nitric oxide synthase (eNOS) in human endothelial cells. Whereas NO produced by the eNOS is a vasoprotective molecule, NO derived from the inducible iNOS plays a pro-inflammatory role in the vasculature. The present study was aimed to investigate the effects of artichoke on iNOS expression in human coronary artery smooth muscle cells (HCASMC). Incubation of HCASMC with a cytokine mixture led to an induction of iNOS mRNA expression. This iNOS induction was c…
Structure-Activity Relations of Flavonoids as Antimutagens Against Cooked Food Mutagens and Nitroarenes in the Salmonella Reversion Assay
1997
When about 60 flavonoids were tested for their antimutagenic potencies against 2-amino-3-methylimidazo [4,5-f]quinoline (IQ) and the nitroarenes 2-nitrofluorene (2-NF), 1-nitropyrene (1-NP), and 3-nitrofluoranthene (3-NFA) in the Salmonella reversion assay, distinct structure-activity relations were detected. With both groups of compounds, flavonoid glycosides were inactive or at best weakly active. Catechins and anthocyanidins, which lack the carbonyl function at C-4 of the flavane nucleus, were inactive. In contrast, chalcones exerted strong antimutagenicity against IQ and the nitroarenes. With respect to IQ, flavonoids of low polarity were the most active compounds: The parent compounds …

Novel σ1 antagonists designed for tumor therapy: Structure – activity relationships of aminoethyl substituted cyclohexanes
2021
Abstract Depending on the substitution pattern and stereochemistry, 1,3-dioxanes 1 with an aminoethyl moiety in 4-position represent potent σ1 receptor antagonists. In order to increase the stability, a cyclohexane ring first replaced the acetalic 1, 3-dioxane ring of 1. A large set of aminoethyl substituted cyclohexane derivatives was prepared in a six-step synthesis. All enantiomers and diastereomers were separated by chiral HPLC at the stage of the primary alcohol 7, and their absolute configuration was determined by CD spectroscopy. Neither the relative nor the absolute configuration had a large impact on the σ1 affinity. The highest σ1 affinity was found for cis-configured benzylamines…
Hypogonadism in β-thalassemic adolescents: A characteristic pituitary-gonadal impairment. The ineffectiveness of long-term iron chelation therapy
1990
The pituitary-gonadal function was studied in 18 beta-thalassemic female adolescents, 8 with delayed puberty and 10 with primary amenorrhea, treated with repeated transfusions and long-term iron chelation therapy by subcutaneous infusion. A 100 micrograms gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) test, a double-bolus GnRH test after estradiol administration in non-responders, a 400 micrograms thyrotropin-releasing hormone (TRH) test and a 'high dose' human menopausal gonadotropin (hMG) test were performed. LH and FSH peak levels were significantly lower in thalassemic patients than in controls, both in the 100 micrograms GnRH test (LH was 4.3 +/- 0.7 mIU/ml vs 40.8 +/- 6.0 mIU/ml and FSH 3.3 +/-…
