Acid-induced rearrangement of epoxygermacra-8,12-olides: synthesis and absolute configuration of guaiane and eudesmane derivatives from artemisiifolin

2010

A study on the acid-induced rearrangement of 4,5-epoxy- and 1,10-epoxygermacra-8,12-olides was carried out. From a 4,5-epoxy derivative, guaianes were obtained, whereas 1,10-epoxy derivatives furnished, depending on the stereochemistry of the C-1/C-10 epoxy ring, trans-5β,10α- or trans-5α,10β-eudesmanolides.

Diagnosis of Non-Celiac Gluten Sensitivity (NCGS): The Salerno Experts’ Criteria

2015

Non-Celiac Gluten Sensitivity (NCGS) is a syndrome characterized by intestinal and extra-intestinal symptoms related to the ingestion of gluten-containing food, in subjects that are not affected by either celiac disease or wheat allergy. Given the lack of a NCGS biomarker, there is the need for standardizing the procedure leading to the diagnosis confirmation. In this paper we report experts' recommendations on how the diagnostic protocol should be performed for the confirmation of NCGS. A full diagnostic procedure should assess the clinical response to the gluten-free diet (GFD) and measure the effect of a gluten challenge after a period of treatment with the GFD. The clinical evaluation i…

Schelling’s pantheism and the problem of evil

2017

ABSTRACTAny religious worldview, understood in the sense that ‘life has a purpose’, has to face the problem of evil. The problem of evil has been particularly intensively discussed in the Aristotelian–Scholastic–Christian tradition. The most popular solution has been to deny that anything truly evil actually exists. It is hard to conceive why an omnipotent and perfectly good God would allow evil to appear. Yet, Western culture has been and still is full of imagery of absolute demonic evil. I suggest that this strained dialectic could be best approached by radically rethinking the nature of evil and the theological context in which it has traditionally been thought. In his middle period work…

Self-reported nonceliac wheat sensitivity in an outpatient digestive endoscopy center: high frequency but insufficient medical approach.

2021

Objective: 'Self-reported wheat sensitivity' (SRWS) is a self-reported condition caused by wheat ingestion in the absence of celiac disease or wheat allergy. The aim of the study was to investigate the frequency and characteristics of SRWS in outpatients referred for digestive endoscopy. Methods: The study, performed at the University of Palermo, enrolled 496 outpatients. Results: Seven individuals (1.4%) had an already established diagnosis of celiac disease. The questionnaire was administered to the other 489 individuals: 98 subjects (20%) were SRWS, the remaining 391 served as controls (i.e. not-SRWS). SRWS patients were younger (P < 0.001), with a higher percentage of females (P = 0.…

Gluten-Free Diet Reduces Symptoms, Particularly Diarrhea, in Patients With Irritable Bowel Syndrome and Antigliadin IgG

2021

Background & Aims Many patients with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) perceive that their symptoms are triggered by wheat-containing foods. We assessed symptoms and gastrointestinal transit before and after a gluten-free diet (GFD) in unselected patients with IBS and investigated biomarkers associated with symptoms. Methods We performed a prospective study of 50 patients with IBS (ROME III, all subtypes), with and without serologic reactivity to gluten (antigliadin IgG and IgA), and 25 healthy subjects (controls) at a university hospital in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, between 2012 and 2016. Gastrointestinal transit, gut symptoms, anxiety, depression, somatization, dietary habits, and microbiot…

Stereoselective Synthesis of Chiral Piperidine Derivatives Employing Arabinopyranosylamine as the Carbohydrate Auxiliary.

2006

Stereoselective synthesis of 2-substituted dehydropiperidinones and their further transformation to variously disubstituted piperidine derivatives was achieved employing D-arabinopyranosylamine as the stereodifferentiating carbohydrate auxiliary. A domino Mannich–Michael reaction of 1-methoxy-3-(trimethylsiloxy)butadiene (Danishefsky's diene) with O-pivaloylated arbinosylaldimines furnished N-arabinosyl dehydropiperidinones in high diastereoselectivity. Subsequent conjugate cuprate addition gave 2,6-cis-substituted piperidinones, while enolate alkylation furnished 2,3-trans-substituted dehydropiperidinones. Electrophilic substitution at the enamine structure afforded 5-nitro- and 5-halogen…

Anomalous pressure dependence of the Lamb-Mössbauerf-factor in the spin crossover system [Fe(2-pic-ND2)3]Cl2·EtOD

1987

The pressure dependence of the Lamb-Mossbauer factor of the spin crossover compound [Fe(2-pic-ND2)3]Cl2·EtOD(2-pic-ND2=2-picolylamine, deuterated at the−NH2 group) has been measured at pressures up to 1500 bar and at three temperatures (115.7, 146.7, 185.6 K) around the transition temperatureT t=135 K. The temperature dependence of the unit cell volume has been determined by X-ray diffraction. In the transition region (T=146.7 K), the pressure dependence of thef-factor shows an anomalous increase as compared to the dependence below and above the transition. The behaviour off(p, T), its anomaly and absolute value, can be consistently explained within a theoretical model which treats the comp…

Structural characterization of carane derivative stereoisomers - Potent local anesthetics

2002

The paper reports on structural investigation and phase analysis of a newly synthesized potent local anesthetic with chiral molecular structure. Absolute structure and absolute configuration on four chiral centres was determined using microcrystalline single-crystal difracti on with anomalous scattering of X-ray radiation azimuthal scan technique. Phase analysis for new compound (K P23SS) and its epimer (K P23 RS) was carried out using classical and synchrotron radiation powder difraction. Enantiopurity of the bulk material was verifed for both isomers by comparison of experimental and simulated high- resolution powder difraction diagrams. The presence of two new polymorphic phases of K P23…

Human Dignity and Legally Protected Goods in Criminal Law

2020

Criminal law protects certain basic goods because they are directly or indirectly connected with the dignity of the person. However, in cases such as euthanasia, prostitution or surrogacy motherhood, the appeal to the dignity of the person is used, in the opposite sense, as the basis for decriminalization. In these cases, dignity is identified with the autonomy of the person and their capacity to dispose of all their goods, even if they are essential. This work argues that there is an ontological core of dignity (requirement of absolute respect) that is subtracted from autonomy and that is protected by the concept of ‘moral integrity’. It prevents certain conducts from being decriminalized …
