Small angle scattering study of poly(methylmethacrylate)-block-poly(ethylene oxide) block co-polymer in aqueous solution

2005

A combined Small Angle X ray (SAXS) and Neutron (SANS) Scattering study of aqueous solutions of a symmetric block copolymer consisting of poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) and poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) moieties is presented. The polymer forms slightly polydisperse spherical micelles in a wide range of concentration (0.03 – 6.7 w/V) and temperature (20°C ≤ T ≤ 65°C). A good description of the SANS data is obtained using a polydisperse core-shell model with a structure factor for a modified hard sphere potential. By increasing the concentration at constant T we observed a decrease of the aggregation number and an increase of solvation of PEO groups in the shell, opposite to what happens by in…

Automated detection of protein unfolding events in atomic force microscopy force curves

2016

Atomic force microscopy is not only a high-resolution imaging device but also a mechanical machine, which can be used either to indent or stretch (soft) biomaterials. Due to the statistical nature of such materials (i.e., hydrogels or polymers) hundreds of force-distance curves are required to describe their mechanical properties. In this manuscript, we present an automated system for polymer unfolding detection based on continuous wavelet analysis. We have tested the automated program on elastin, which is an important protein that provides elasticity to tissues and organs. Our results show that elastin changes its mechanical behavior in the presence of electrolytes. In particular, we show …

ISomerization of xylene: MINDO/3 study of the cyclization of benzenium cation into bicyclo[3.1.0]hexenyl cation

1989

Abstract A MINDO/3 study of thermal electrocyclic closing of the benzenium cation to form a bicyclo[3.1.0]hexenyl cation is presented. The calculated mechanism discusses the possibility of cyclization of xylenium cations on a silica catalyst or in superacid media. The structure and energy of the transition state, the enthalpies of isomerization and barriers of activation were calculated for the following processes: isomerization of 2,6-dimethylbenzenium cation into 2,6-dimethylbicyclo[3.1.0]hexenyl cation, isomerization of 2,4-dimethylbenzenium cation into 2,4-dimethylbicyclo[3.1.0]-hexenyl cation, and isomerization of benzenium cation into bicyclo[3.1.0]-hexenyl cation. Equilibrium and kin…

Ambient Temperature, Social Perception and Social Behavior

2020

The literature suggests that human perception and behavior vary with physical temperature. We provide an experimental test of how different ambient temperature conditions impact social behavior and social perception: Subjects went through a series of tasks measuring various aspects of social behavior and perception under three temperature conditions (cold vs. optimal vs. warm). Despite well-established findings on temperature effects, our data suggest that physical temperature has no relevant influence on social behavior and social perception. We corroborate our finding of a null effect by the use of equivalence testing and provide a discussion in the light of recent failed replication atte…

Designing Medical Devices Based on Silicon Polymeric Material with Controlled Release of Local Anesthetics

2012

The drug delivery systems that are the object of this article take the form of a polymer matrix made of silicone containing a drug. These devices can be used as patches for local dermal applications releasing the drug in a controlled manner. The model active agent, lidocaine hydrochloride was chosen from the range of local anesthetics. When the drug is restricted to the surface, it is released more rapidly than when it is allowed to spread evenly throughout the silicon structure. When hydrophilic polymers such as PVA and HEC are mixed in with the lidocaine hydrochloride and deposited on the surface of the polymer matrix, we observed that the burst effect was eliminated without modifying the…

1984

Alkaline hydrolyses of anionic phenyl esters such as 4-acetoxy-3-nitrobenzoic acid and 4-butyryloxy-3-nitrobenzoic acid were examined in the presence of cationic and polymeric liposomes, liposomes of low molecular weight compounds, and micelles. All the additives accelerate the reaction due to the hydrophobic interaction between substrates and additives and the electrostatic interaction both between substrates and additives and between OH− and additives. In the Arrhenius plots of the reactions catalyzed by the liposomes, discontinuous regions were observed due to the phase transition of liposomes from the gel state to the liquid crystal state. Activation parameters ΔH≠, ΔS≠ and ΔV≠ for thes…

Gradientenabhängigkeit der Viskosität verdünnter Lösungen von Fadenmolekülen

1964

Development of core-shell colloids to study self-diffusion in highly concentrated dispersions

2007

To study single particle motion in highly concentrated colloidal dispersions, a host-tracer colloid system was developed, consisting of crosslinked polymer micronetwork spheres placed in a good solvent. The host colloid is made invisible to the experimental probe by matching its refractive index to that of the solvent. For the tracer particles a core-shell structure was chosen to ensure the interaction potential to be identical to that of the host particles. Therefore the shell was made of the same polymer as the host. The core differs in refractive index from the solvent and is therefore visible due to scattered light.

1D coordination polymer based on copper(II)-containing tetrameric 1,2,3-triazole ligand from click chemistry: Magnetic and catalytic properties

2019

Abstract A novel tetrameric tetra[O-((1-benzyl-1H-1,2,3-triazol-4-yl)methyl)]-pentaerythritol (TBTP) has been synthesized using click chemistry strategy. TBTP was characterized and used as ligand to form new Cu(II) complexes, forming 1-D coordination polymers. Two square planar complexes were characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, presenting formula [Cu(TBTP)][Cu(NO3)4] (1) and [Cu(TBTP)](NO3)2 (2). In both structures, a cationic 1-D coordination polymer (CP) has been formed. The CP contain a 1:1 Cu(II)/TBTP ratio with four neutral triazole groups coordinating the Cu(II) center, forming a Cu N bonds ranging 1.988(2)–2.001(2) A. The study of the magnetic properties of compounds 1…

Complexation of M3+Lanthanide Cations by Calix[4]arene-CMPO Ligands: A Molecular Dynamics Study in Methanol Solution and at a Water/Chloroform Interf…

2000

Abstract We report a molecular dynamics study on the 1:1 M3+ lanthanide (La3+, Eu3+ and Yb3+) inclusion complexes of an important extractant molecule L: a calix[4]arene-tetraalkyl ether substituted at the wide rim by four NH-C(O)-CH2-P(O)Ph2 arms. The M(NO3)3 and MCl3 complexes of L are compared in methanol solution and at a water / chloroform interface. In the different environments the coordination sphere of M3+ involves the four phosphoryl oxygens and three to four loosely bound carbonyl oxygens of the CMPO-like arms. Based on free energy simulations, we address the question of ion binding selectivity in pure liquid phases and at the liquid-liquid interface where L and the complexes are …
