The eye in thyroid autoimmunity – Autoimmunité et œil lors de la maladie de Basedow

2014

Thyroid eye disease or thyroid-associated orbitopathy (TAO) is the commonest cause of orbital disease with an inflammatory component. With a basic knowledge of both orbital anatomy and the pathogenesis of TAO, it is easy to understand how its typical constellation of features originates. These features can be considered as primary or secondary. Primary features are those due directly to the disease process affecting a tissue e.g. restrictive myopathy. Secondary features occur due to the interaction of the affected tissue and the anatomical configuration of the tissues e.g. corneal ulceration or optic neuropathy, and are less likely to be florid at presentation. TAO is characterized by an im…

OP0017 Gut-Derived IL-23R+CD3+CD4-CD8-CD56+T-BET+NKP44+ Cells Are Expanded in the Peripheral Blood, Synovial Fluid and Bone Marrow of Patients with A…

2014

Background Chronic gut inflammation occurring in AS patients has been linked to active axial inflammation and the gut has been proposed as the main site of IL-23 production in AS patients. IL-23 has been demonstrated to be essential in murine enthesitis by acting on a unique subset of entheseal resident T cells that share some immunological features with a subset of IL-23-responsive gut derived innate lymphoid cells (type III ILCs). Objectives Aim of the study was to better characterize the immunologic origin and the behavior of ILCs in the gut, synovial fluid and bone marrow of AS patients. Methods Consecutive ileal gut biopsies were obtained from 20 HLA-B27 + AS patients with axial active…

Pathobiology of Hodgkin Lymphoma

2010

Despite its well-known histological and clinical features, Hodgkin's lymphoma (HL) has recently been the object of intense research activity, leading to a better understanding of its phenotype, molecular characteristics, histogenesis, and possible mechanisms of lymphomagenesis. There is complete consensus on the B-cell derivation of the tumor in most cases, and on the relevance of Epstein-Barr virus infection and defective cytokinesis in at least a proportion of patients. The REAL/WHO classification recognizes a basic distinction between lymphocyte predominance HL (LP-HL) and classic HL (cHL), reflecting the differences in clinical presentation and behavior, morphology, phenotype, and molec…

Ameoblastic carcinoma of mandible - A rare case report with review of literature

2010

Ameloblastic carcinoma is a rare malignant lesion with characteristic histologic features and behavior that dictates more aggressive surgical approach than that of a simple ameloblastoma. However, reliable evidence of its biologic activity is currently unavailable due to the scarcity of well-documented cases. It occurs primarily in the mandible in a wide range of age groups; no sex or race predilection has been noted. It may present as a cystic lesion with benign clinical features or as a large tissue mass with ulceration, significant bone resorption and tooth mobility. Because the lesion is usually found unexpectedly after an incisional biopsy or the removal of a cyst, a guide to different…

Niemann-Pick Type C-2 Disease: Identification by Analysis of Plasma Cholestane-3β,5α,6β-Triol and Further Insight into the Clinical Phenotype.

2014

Niemann-Pick type C disease is a rare disorder caused by impaired intracellular lipid transport due to mutations in either the NPC1 or the NPC2 gene. Ninety-five % of NPC patients show mutations in the NPC1 gene. A much smaller number of patients suffer from NPC2 disease and present respiratory failure as one of the most frequent symptoms. Several plasma oxysterols are highly elevated in NPC1 and can be used as a biomarker in the diagnosis of NPC1.Plasma cholestane-3β,5α,6β-triol was evaluated as biomarker for NPC2 by GC/MS and LC-MS/MS analysis. The diagnosis was confirmed by Sanger sequencing and filipin staining. We report three NPC2 patients with typical respiratory problems and a detail…

The EBV-DNA Can be Used as a Diagnostic and Follow-up Parameter of the Rhinopharyngeal Tumors in the Non-Endemic Population of the Western Sicily

2018

To evaluate whether EBV-DNA can be used as a diagnostic and follow-up parameter for nasopharyngeal tumors in a non-endemic population. The study was carried out in a university hospital. A retrospective study was conducted on 40 paraffin samples of histological preparations. EB-DNA was detected by real-time PCR technique. A prospective study was also conducted on a group of 30 patients who underwent nasopharyngeal biopsy for suspected nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) by comparing EBV-DNA concentrations between the histological specimen and the serum. Quantification of genomic copies of EBV-DNA in serum and detection of anti-EBV antibodies was performed. In both groups the presence of high vir…
