Sentinel lymph node biopsy in malignant melanoma of the head and neck

2018

Abstract Background The aim of this retrospective study was to investigate sentinel lymph node biopsy in patients with head and neck melanoma. Materials and methods Patients who underwent SLNB between 2010 and 2016 were comprised. Epidemiological, radiological, and surgical data were collected and compared to histological findings. Patients who underwent primary complete lymph node dissection were excluded. Results 74 patients underwent SLNB during this period. The most common tumor localizations were the cheek (20.4%) and ears (20.4%). Overall, 256 sentinel lymph nodes (SLN) were detected and removed, most frequently in Robbins-levels IIA and IIB as well as in the surrounding of the paroti…

Cisternostomy: A Timely Intervention in Moderate to Severe Traumatic Brain Injuries: Rationale, Indications, and Prospects.

2019

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) represents a major public health concern worldwide, with no significant change in its epidemiology over the last 30 years. After TBI, the primary injury induces irreversible brain damage, which is untreatable. The subsequent secondary injury plays a critical role in the clinical prognosis because without effective treatment it will provide additional tissue damage. The resulting scenario is the rise in intracranial pressure (ICP) with the development of progressive neurological deficits. Current optimal management is based on a progressive, target-driven approach combining both medical and surgical treatment strategies among which is decompressive hemicraniectom…

Persistence of Human Bocavirus 1 in Tonsillar Germinal Centers and Antibody-Dependent Enhancement of Infection

2021

Human bocavirus 1 (HBoV1), a common pediatric respiratory pathogen, can persist in airway secretions for months hampering diagnosis. It also persists in tonsils, providing potential reservoirs for airway shedding, with the exact location, host cell types, and virus activity unknown.

Nachweis hepatischer Mikrometastasen

2010

Colorectal cancer is one of the three most frequent malignancies in humans. Survival is mainly determined by local recurrence, lymphatic and hematogenous dissemination. Primary liver resection for metastases is possible in ~20-25% of patients with hepatic metastases and results in a 50% recurrence rate within 23 months. The five-year survival without treatment in patients with UICC stage IV is only 5%, the mean survival 6-9 months. As a result of promising developments in chemotherapy and targeted therapies in the last decade, the mean survival rate has significantly improved to over more than two years. Furthermore, the use of polychemotherapy in combination with anti-angiogenic and anti-p…

Staging of Bladder Cancer

1982

It is well established that the prognosis of cancer patients depends on several factors including: the local extension of the tumour, and the presence of single or multiple tumours; the presence or absence of lymph-node metastases and/or distant metastases; the presence or absence of neoplastic cells in lymphatics or in blood vessels; the histopathological type and architecture; the degree of cellular differentiation; the tumour — host relationship, including the patient’s immunological reactivity.

The use of neural networks in identifying risk factors for lymph node metastasis and recommending management of t1b esophageal cancer.

2012

The objective of this study was to establish a prediction model of lymph node status in T1b esophageal carcinoma and define the best squamous and adenocarcinoma predictors. The literature lacks a satisfactory level of evidence of T1b esophageal cancer management. We performed an analysis pooling the effects of outcomes of 2098 patients enrolled into 37 retrospective studies using “neural networks” as data mining techniques. The percentages for lymph node, lymphatic (L1), and vascular (V1) invasion in Sm1 esophageal cancers were 24, 46, and 20 per cent, respectively. The same parameters apply to Sm2 with 34, 63, and 38 per cent as opposed to Sm3 with 51, 69, and 47 per cent. The respective …

Hematopoietic and lymphatic cancers in patients with periodontitis : a systematic review and meta-analysis

2019

Background Numerous studies have explored the correlation of periodontal disease (PD) with risk of hematopoietic and lymphatic cancers, but the findings were inconsistent. Therefore, we did a meta-analysis to ascertain the correlation of PD with risk of incident hematopoietic and lymphatic cancers. Material and Methods The authors searched relevant studies in databases (PubMed, Web of Science, and MEDLINE). The summary relative risk (RR) along with 95% confidence interval (CI) was calculated by use of random or fixed effects models. Results Six studies were included in qualitative synthesis. The pooled analysis revealed that PD was significantly associated with an increased risk of hematopo…

2019

Basal cell carcinoma has a potential for early and late metastasis. Depending on the location of the primary site, the relevant lymphatic drainage routes have to be monitored. Regional lymph edema may be a first indicator for metastasizing disease.

Do Patients with Luminal A Breast Cancer Profit from Adjuvant Systemic Therapy? A Retrospective Multicenter Study

2016

Background Luminal A breast cancers respond well to anti-hormonal therapy (HT), are associated with a generally favorable prognosis and constitute the majority of breast cancer subtypes. HT is the mainstay of treatment of these patients, accompanied by an acceptable profile of side effects, whereas the added benefit of chemotherapy (CHT), including anthracycline and taxane-based programs, is less clear-cut and has undergone a process of critical revision. Methods In the framework of the BRENDA collective, we analyzed the benefits of CHT compared to HT in 4570 luminal A patients (pts) with primary diagnosis between 2001 and 2008. The results were adjusted by nodal status, age, tumor size and…

High Lymph Vessel Density and Expression of Lymphatic Growth Factors in Peritoneal Endometriosis

2012

To investigate the occurrence of lymph vessels and lymphangiogenic growth factors in peritoneal lesions, we performed immunohistochemical staining of peritoneal lesions of 37 patients with antibodies against podoplanin (D2-40), lymphatic vessel endothelial hyaluronan receptor 1 (LYVE-1), prospero homeobox protein 1 (Prox-1), vascular epithelial growth factor (VEGF)-C/VEGF-D. Overall, 10 lesions were double stained against D2-40 and von Willebrand factor. The lymph vessel density in peritoneal lesion was significantly higher in comparison with healthy peritoneum. All lymph vessel makers could be detected, whereby the lymph vessel density of LYVE-1- and Prox-1-positive lymph vessels was signi…
