Cancer is a widespread and life-threatening disease and its early-stage diagnosis is vital. One of the most effective, non-invasive tools in medical diagnostics is magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) with the aid of contrast agents. Contrast agents that are currently in clinical use contain metals, causing some restrictions in their use. Abstract Some polychlorinated and polymethylated dibenzothiophenes have been synthesized to serve as model compounds in environmental analysis. In order to obtain pure isomers, the synthesis mixtures have been fractionated with reversed-phase high performance liquid chromatography. In spite of a high sensitivity, mass spectrometry does not provide any reliable way to determine the precise structures of different isomers. Solvent dependence of the νs(OD) bandshape in 2,6-dichlorophenol

Abstract The infrared bandshape of νs(OD) of 2,6-dichlorophenol is measured in a series of solvents of increasing polarity, and is quantitatively analysed. The bandshape is described in terms of band indices, moments, correlation functions and correlation times. A distinct solvent dependence of bandshape and relaxation parameters has been found. The changes of the νs(OD) bandshape with increasing solvent polarity are compared in detail with those obtained earlier for analogous solvents for νs(OH) of 2,6-dichlorophenol. The overall behaviour of the spectral and relaxation parameters is similar, but the changes are less distinct for the weaker OD ⋯ Cl bond.

This paper reports experimental densities, viscosities, and refractive indices of the binary systems methyl tert-butyl ether (MTBE) + 2-methylpentane, + 3-methylpentane, + 2,3-dimethylpentane, and + 2,2,4-trimethylpentane over the entire range of composition, at 298.15 K and atmospheric pressure. Excess molar volumes and viscosity deviations were evaluated from the experimental data. These excess or derived properties were fitted to the Redlich−Kister equation to estimate the binary interaction parameters. The experimental values of viscosity have been compared to values predicted by means of the GC−UNIMOD model.

The effect of a temperature-sensitive prophage on the evolution of virulence in an opportunistic bacterial pathogen

AbstractViruses are key actors of ecosystems and have major impacts on global biogeochemical cycles. Prophages deserve particular attention as they are ubiquitous in bacterial genomes and can enter a lytic cycle when triggered by environmental conditions. We explored how temperature affects the interactions between prophages and other biological levels by using an opportunistic pathogen, the bacterium Serratia marcescens, that harbours several prophages and that had undergone an evolution experiment under several temperature regimes. Abstract Fungal growth inhibition and aflatoxins (AFs) reduction using allyl (AITC), benzyl (BITC) and phenyl (PITC) isothiocyanates were studied in loaf bread contaminated with Aspergillus parasiticus . Two inoculated loaf bread slices were introduced into a plastic tray together with paper filters or small plastic bags paper filters soaked with AITC, BITC or PITC, the final concentration inside the package was of 0.5, 1 or 5 μL/L. It focuses on recent advances made to study and identify the taste-active components present in the water-soluble fraction of cheese. The Potential Use of Raw and Deodorized Non-Conventional Protein Powder in Human Food

This study aimed to evaluate the potential use of a non-conventional protein source, a powder made from earthworms, as human food. Sensory analyses were done in order to assess the acceptability of cookies that were fortified with Eisenia foetida (Ef) protein powder. Cocoa and cinnamon were used as taste-masking agents. The acceptability of cookies fortified with deodorized Ef protein powder (off-flavor reduced) was also evaluated. We demonstrated that cocoa cookies can be fortified with 3.9% of raw Ef proteins and that cocoa/cinnamon cookies can be fortified with 5.2% of raw Ef proteins without any loss in their acceptability.
