Differential diurnal variations of anandamide and 2-arachidonoyl-glycerol levels in rat brain.

2004

The endogenous ligands of cannabinoid receptors, also known as endocannabinoids, have been implicated in many physiological and pathological processes of the central nervous system. Here we show that the levels of the two major endocannabinoids, anandamide and 2-arachidonoyl-glycerol (2-AG), in four areas of the rat brain, change dramatically between the light and dark phases of the day. While anandamide levels in the nucleus accumbens, pre-frontal cortex, striatum and hippocampus were significantly higher in the dark phase, the opposite was observed with 2-AG, whose levels were significantly higher during the light phase in all four regions. We found that the activity of the fatty acid ami…

On hyperbolic type involutions

2001

We give a bound on the number of hyperbolic knots which are double covered by a fixed (non hyperbolic) manifold in terms of the number of tori and of the invariants of the Seifert fibred pieces of its Jaco-Shalen-Johannson decomposition. We also investigate the problem of finding the non hyperbolic knots with the same double cover of a hyperbolic one and give several examples to illustrate the results.

Mappings of Finite Distortion : Compactness of the Branch Set

2017

We show that an entire branched cover of finite distortion cannot have a compact branch set if its distortion satisfies a certain asymptotic growth condition. We furthermore show that this bound is strict by constructing an entire, continuous, open and discrete mapping of finite distortion which is piecewise smooth, has a branch set homeomorphic to an (n - 2)-dimensional torus and distortion arbitrarily close to the asymptotic bound. A Mutually Stimulating Loop Involving Emx2 and Canonical Wnt Signalling Specifically Promotes Expansion of Occipital Cortex and Hippocampus

2005

The correct size of the different areas composing the mature cerebral cortex depends on the proper early allocation of cortical progenitors to their distinctive areal fates, as well as on appropriate subsequent tuning of their area-specific proliferation--differentiation profiles. Whereas much is known about the genetics of the former process, the molecular mechanisms regulating proliferation and differentiation rates within distinctive cortical proto-areas are still largely obscure. Here we show that a mutual stimulating loop, involving Emx2 and canonical Wnt signalling, specifically promotes expansion of the occipito-hippocampal anlage. Collapse of this loop occurring in Emx2 2/2 mutants …

Mg2+ binding triggers rearrangement of the IM30 ring structure, resulting in augmented exposure of hydrophobic surfaces competent for membrane binding

2018

The "inner membrane-associated protein of 30 kDa" (IM30), also known as "vesicle-inducing protein in plastids 1" (Vipp1), is found in the majority of photosynthetic organisms that use oxygen as an energy source, and its occurrence appears to be coupled to the existence of thylakoid membranes in cyanobacteria and chloroplasts. IM30 is most likely involved in thylakoid membrane biogenesis and/or maintenance, and has recently been shown to function as a membrane fusion protein in presence of Mg2+ However, the precise role of Mg2+ in this process and its impact on the structure and function of IM30 remains unknown. Here, we show that Mg2+ binds directly to IM30 with a binding affinity of ∼1 mm …

Rywalizacja międzypartyjna i wewnątrzpartyjna w kampanii referendum europejskiego w Wielkiej Brytanii z 2016 roku

2017

Inter‑party and intra‑party rivalry in the 2016 EU referendum campaign in the United Kingdom
The objective of this paper is an analysis of the course of the 2016 EU referendum campaign from the perspective of the political battle between the parties and between intra‑party factions. Besides the main goals of the UK’s leaving the EU or remaining within it, the stakes of the battle included the strengthening of one’s own political camp, the weakening of one’s opponents, the gaining of power within a party or, eventually, the gaining of power in the country. The article is divided into two major parts devoted to the analysis of inter‑party rivalry and intra‑party rivalry respectively. Th…

Antioxidant activity of essential oils obtained from aerial part of some Lamiaceae species

2018

Introduction: Essential oils are the perspective source of natural antioxidants because some synthetic antioxidants are now suspected to be potentially harmful to human health. As free radicals can cause inflammatory diseases, cancer, atherosclerosis, and aging, antioxidants can inhibit oxidative chain reactions. Essential oils have a wide range of pharmacological effects as they are multicomponent mixtures of chemical compounds, mainly terpenoids and aromatic components. Materials and Methods: The antioxidant activity of essential oils obtained from aerial parts of Ocimum americanum, Lophanthus anisatus, Monarda fistulosa, and Satureja hortensis (Lamiaceae) has been evaluated spectrophotom…

The crystal structure of bacteriophage Qβ at 3.5 å resolution

1996

Abstract Background: The capsid protein subunits of small RNA bacteriophages form a T=3 particle upon assembly and RNA encapsidation. Dimers of the capsid protein repress translation of the replicase gene product by binding to the ribosome binding site and this interaction is believed to initiate RNA encapsidation. We have determined the crystal structure of phage Qβ with the aim of clarifying which factors are the most important for particle assembly and RNA interaction in the small phages. Results The crystal structure of bacteriophage Qβ determined at 3.5 a resolution shows that the capsid is stabilized by disulfide bonds on each side of the flexible loops that are situated around the fi…

Prevalence of Spinal Muscular Atrophy in the Era of Disease-Modifying Therapies: An Italian Nationwide Survey.

2022

ObjectiveSpinal muscular atrophy (SMA) is a neurodegenerative disorder caused by mutations in the SMN1 gene. The aim of this study was to assess the prevalence of SMA and treatment prescription in Italy.MethodsAn online survey was distributed to 36 centers identified by the Italian government as referral centers for SMA. Data on the number of patients with SMA subdivided according to age, type,SMN2copy number, and treatment were collected.ResultsOne thousand two hundred fifty-five patients with SMA are currently followed in the Italian centers with an estimated prevalence of 2.12/100,000. Of the 1,255, 284 were type I, 470 type II, 467 type III, and 15 type IV with estimated prevalence of 0…
