Using Mobile Devices as a Supportive Tool to Engage and Interest Young Students in e-Health
2019
Master's thesis Multimedia and Educational Technology MM500 - University of Agder 2019 This thesis explores if mobile devices could be used as a supportive elementto engage and interest young students in e-health by developing a prototypeto handle simulations of e-health scenarios in a serious game setting. Theprototype was to be used as a supportive tool for the research projectHighSchool Students as Co-researchers in eHealth. An iterative design processwas deployed to develop the prototype, going through multiple steps periteration, focusing on design and development, testing, and evaluation. Theresults from all of the testing were examined, and compared with the researchquestions regardi…
Design of a VR application for pilots as a complementary tool for procedure training of Abnormal Operations
2021
Master's thesis in Multimedia and educational technology (MM506) The aviation industry has been amongst the early adopters of VR for educational purposes, even since the very beginning of VR’s technology establishment and throughout its further development. Flight simulators are invaluable as they let pilots and instructors replicate any situation for learning full control over the plane and improve situational awareness without paying the price of life-safety if using an actual aircraft. Abnormal operations and their procedures are a key subject of safety training, where pilots have to understand and memorize particular orders of actions in order to solve a dangerous situation on board. A …
VR formidling av en kunstnerisk opplevelse : Dette prosjektet er en interaktiv kunstinstallasjon laget i VR for Sørlandets Kunstmuseum
2021
Investigating Motion Sickness in Racing Simulators using Virtual Reality and a Motion Platform
2021
Master's thesis in Multimedia and educational technology (MM506) Motion sickness has been a downside of virtual reality since its beginning. According to the "Sensory conflict" theory, simulation sickness and cybersickness often occurs due to the feeling of self-motion. This thesis aimed to investigate if a motion platform could mitigate simulation sickness. By using commercial available motion platform and virtual reality headset, the experiment had three conditions, one without any added motion, one with motion and the last with increased motion. Participants were put in a complete racing set to drive an Edge 6D motion simulator in Asseto Corsa. The participants drove a high-speed car for…
High Variability of Fabry Disease Manifestations in an Extended Italian Family
2015
Fabry disease (FD) is an inherited metabolic disorder caused by partial or full inactivation of the lysosomal hydrolaseα-galactosidase A (α-GAL). The impairment ofα-GAL results in the accumulation of undegraded glycosphingolipids in lysosomes and subsequent cell and microvascular dysfunctions. This study reports the clinical, biochemical, and molecular characterization of 15 members of the same family. Eight members showed the exonic mutation M51I in the GLA gene, a disease-causing mutation associated with the atypical phenotype. The clinical history of this family highlights a wide phenotypic variability, in terms of involved organs and severity. The phenotypic variability of two male pati…
Prejunctional M1 and postjunctional M3 muscarinic receptors in the circular muscle of the guinea-pig ileum.
1995
The effects of subtype-selective muscarinic receptor antagonists on electrically evoked release of acetylcholine and muscle contraction were compared in circular muscle preparations of the guinea-pig ileum. Incubation of the preparation with [3H]choline resulted in the formation of [3H]acetylcholine. Electrical stimulation caused the release of [3H]acetylcholine which was abolished by tetrodotoxin and omission of calcium from the medium. 5-Hydroxytryptamine (10 microM) and the nicotinic agonist 1,1-dimethyl-4-phenyl-piperazinium (300 microM) did not change acetylcholine release. The muscarinic antagonists pirenzepine (M1 selective), AF-DX 116 (M2 selective) and hexahydrosiladifenidol (M3 se…
Cholinergic Responses of Ophthalmic Arteries in M3and M5Muscarinic Acetylcholine Receptor Knockout Mice
2009
PURPOSE. To determine the functional role of M 3 and M 5 muscarinic acetylcholine receptor subtypes in ophthalmic arteries using gene-targeted mice. METHODS. Muscarinic receptor gene expression was quantified in murine ophthalmic arteries using real-time PCR. To test the functional relevance of M 3 and M 5 receptors, ophthalmic arteries from mice deficient in either subtype (M3R -/- , M5R -/- , respectively) and wild-type controls were isolated, cannulated with micropipettes, and pressurized. Changes in luminal vessel diameter in response to muscarinic and nonmuscarinic receptor agonists were measured by video microscopy. RESULTS. With the use of real-time PCR, all five muscarinic receptor …
Identification of the Muscarinic Acetylcholine Receptor Subtype Mediating Cholinergic Vasodilation in Murine Retinal Arterioles
2011
To identify the muscarinic acetylcholine receptor subtype that mediates cholinergic vasodilation in murine retinal arterioles.Muscarinic receptor gene expression was determined in murine retinal arterioles using real-time PCR. To assess the functional relevance of muscarinic receptors for mediating vascular responses, retinal vascular preparations from muscarinic receptor-deficient mice were studied in vitro. Changes in luminal arteriole diameter in response to muscarinic and nonmuscarinic vasoactive substances were measured by video microscopy.Only mRNA for the M(3) receptor was detected in retinal arterioles. Thus, M(3) receptor-deficient mice (M3R(-/-)) and respective wild-type controls …
Role of M1, M3, and M5 muscarinic acetylcholine receptors in cholinergic dilation of small arteries studied with gene-targeted mice
2011
Acetylcholine regulates perfusion of numerous organs via changes in local blood flow involving muscarinic receptor-induced release of vasorelaxing agents from the endothelium. The purpose of the present study was to determine the role of M1, M3, and M5 muscarinic acetylcholine receptors in vasodilation of small arteries using gene-targeted mice deficient in either of the three receptor subtypes (M1R−/−, M3R−/−, or M5R−/− mice, respectively). Muscarinic receptor gene expression was determined in murine cutaneous, skeletal muscle, and renal interlobar arteries using real-time PCR. Moreover, respective arteries from M1R−/−, M3R−/−, M5R−/−, and wild-type mice were isolated, cannulated with mic…
A binary genetic approach to characterize TRPM5 cells in mice
2015
International audience; Transient receptor potential channel subfamily M member 5 (TRPM5) is an important downstream signaling component in a subset of taste receptor cells making it a potential target for taste modulation. Interestingly, TRPM5 has been detected in extra-oral tissues; however, the function of extra-gustatory TRPM5-expressing cells is less well understood. To facilitate visualization and manipulation of TRPM5-expressing cells in mice, we generated a Cre knock-in TRPM5 allele by homologous recombination. We then used the novel TRPM5-IRES-Cre mouse strain to report TRPM5 expression by activating a tau GFP transgene. To confirm faithful coexpression of tau GFP and TRPM5 we gene…
