Tutkimus selvittää vuonna 1850 kasvattilapsiksi päätyneiden 11 henkilön elämänkulkua ja elämässä selviytymistä esiteollisen ajan Korpilahdella. Elämässä selviytymistä on tarkasteltu selvittämällä, poikkesiko tutkittavien elämä aikakauden ei-kasvattilapsitaustaisten ihmisten tyypillisestä elämästä. Elämässä selviytyminen on määritelty tutkittavien aikakauden olosuhteiden mukaan. Tutkittavien todellisia elinolosuhteita on saatu selville tutkimalla heidän sosiaalisia suhteitaan, sosiaalista asemaansa ja elämänkulkuaan.
