The Scope of Application of Macrocyclic Polyamines Beyond Metal Chelation

2019

International audience; Recent advances in the use of radiometals for both imaging and therapy has spurred on the development of an original chemistry that endows radionuclide-chelating molecular cages with ever sharper physicochemical properties. Macrocyclic polyamines (MPAs) such as cyclen and DOTA are among the most frequently encountered cages for the design of new radiotracers, owing to their versatile chemistry that makes them customizable molecular tools. The idea of using MPAs for alternative purposes has recently emerged, with an eye towards benefiting from their unique topology, versatility, symmetry and water-solubility. This review summarizes strategies that have been recently i…

Heat Shock Protein 60 in Hepatocellular Carcinoma: Insights and Perspectives

2020

Heat shock protein 60 (HSP60) is a mitochondrial chaperone that is implicated in physiological and pathological processes. For instance, it contributes to protein folding and stability, translocation of mitochondrial proteins, and apoptosis. Variations in the expression levels of HSP60 have been correlated to various diseases and cancers, including hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Unlike other HSPs which clearly increase in some cancers, data about HSP60 levels in HCC are controversial and difficult to interpret. In the current review, we summarize and simplify the current knowledge about the role of HSP60 in HCC. In addition, we highlight the possibility of its targeting, using chemical com…

Thermal anomalies detection in a photovoltaic plant using artificial intelligence: Italy case studies

2021

This paper proposes the application of artificial intelligence techniques for the identification of thermal anomalies that occur in a photovoltaic system due to malfunctions or faults, with the aim to limit the energy production losses by detecting faults at an early stage. The proposed approach is based on a Thermographic Non-Destructive Test conducted with Unmanned Aerial Vehicles equipped with a thermal imaging camera, which allows the detection of abnormal operating conditions without interrupting the normal operation of the PV system rapidly and cost-effectively. The thermographic images and videos are automatically inspected using a Convolutional Neural Network, developed by an open-s…

A Quantitative Analysis of the Thermoelastic Effect in CFRP Composite Materials

2010

In this study the thermoelastic signal from carbon fibre-reinforced plastic (CFRP) laminates is investigated. A comparison between the theoretical and experimental values of the thermoelastic signal is reported, with the theoretical predictions obtained from two different quantitative models. These models are based on the classic thermoelastic effect law extended to the case of orthotropic materials (by using the mesomechanical or bulk approach), and the modified law assuming that the surface resin-rich layer behaves as a strain witness of the laminate. It is found that the theoretical predictions of the two models can be strongly and differently influenced by the intrinsic orthotropy of ca…

Thiazole Analogues of the Marine Alkaloid Nortopsentin as Inhibitors of Bacterial Biofilm Formation

2020

Anti-virulence strategy is currently considered a promising approach to overcome the global threat of the antibiotic resistance. Among different bacterial virulence factors, the biofilm formation is recognized as one of the most relevant. Considering the high and growing percentage of multi-drug resistant infections that are biofilm-mediated, new therapeutic agents capable of counteracting the formation of biofilms are urgently required. In this scenario, a new series of 18 thiazole derivatives was efficiently synthesized and evaluated for its ability to inhibit biofilm formation against the Gram-positive bacterial reference strains Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25923 and S. aureus ATCC 6538 a…

MODIFICATION OF HYDROPHOBIC SURFACE WITH POLYASPARTAMIDE-BASED POLYCATIONS FOR BIOMEDICAL APPLICATION

2013

A convenient way for the achievement of polymer-based solid materials for specific biomedical applications is grafting the appropriate macromolecules onto the surfaces in order to confer them specific properties. To date many approaches have been used to covalently modify polymeric surfaces, and among them chemoselective coupling reactions, usually referred as “click” reactions, gained much attention thanks to simple procedure with high reaction rate under mild reaction conditions (at normal temperature and pressure) [1]. In particular, radical-initiated thiol-yne “photo-click” chemistry has been demonstrated as an effective way to functionalize efficiently surfaces. This method gives also …

Synthesis, antiproliferative activity, and in silico insights of new 3-benzoylamino-benzo[ b ]thiophene derivatives

2014

A new series of 3-benzoylamino-5-imidazol-5-yl-benzo[b]thiophenes and the parent amino derivatives were synthesized and screened as antitumor agents. All tested compounds showed concentration-dependent antiproliferative activity profile against HeLa cell line, exhibiting GI50 values in the low micromolar range. The most active compounds were tested in cell cycle perturbation experiments. A rapid accumulation of cells in the G2/M phase, with a concomitant reduction of cells in both the S and G0/G1 phases, was observed, suggesting that cell exposure to selected derivatives produces mitotic failure. To rationalize the biological results, the 3-benzoylamino-benzo[b]thiophenes were analyzed thro…
