The invasion history of Elodea canadensis and E. nuttallii (Hydrocharitaceae) in Italy from herbarium accessions, field records and historical litera…
2022
AbstractWe analysed the invasion history of two North American macrophytes (Elodea canadensis and E. nuttallii) in Italy, through an accurate census of all available herbarium and field records, dating between 1850 and 2019, and a rich literature collection describing the initial introduction and naturalisation phase that supports the results obtained by the occurrence records. Elodea canadensis arrived in Italy before 1866 and had two invasion phases, between the 1890s and 1920s and between the 1990s and 2000s; E. nuttallii, probably arrived in the 1970s, started invading in 2000 and the invasion is still ongoing. Botanical gardens and fish farming played a crucial role in dispersal and na…
Isoëtes sabatina (Isoëtaceae, Lycopodiopsida). Taxonomic distinctness and preliminary ecological insights
2021
1) Isoëtes sabatina is the rarest aquatic quillwort in Europe. Although recently found (2013) in Lake Bracciano (central Italy), the species is just one step away from extinction with an estimated population not exceeding 400 individuals and a spatial range of a few hundred square metres. 2) Lake Bracciano is a deep, oligo-mesotrophic Mediterranean volcanic lake that has been subjected to human activities. From January to October 2017, the lake experienced a dramatic water level decrease (up to −1.50 m), which significantly affected the littoral zone and the habitat of I. sabatina. 3) To improve the chances of survival of I. sabatina, the first eco-taxonomic investigation on this species wa…
Effect of a Killer Toxin of Yeast on Eucaryotic Systems
1988
The Saccharomyces cerevisiae killer toxin KT 28, which inhibits sensitive yeasts, was shown to have no effect on several pathogenic fungi or on the protozoan Trichomonas vaginalis. At concentrations of about 0.1 mg/ml, a partial inhibition of the skin pathogenic fungi Trichophyton rubrum and Microsporum canis was observed at pH 6.5. No pharmacological activity was detected in various tests with several animal organs.
A comparison of two methods for surveying aquatic macrophyte communities in boreal lakes: Implications for bioassessment
2013
To compare the performance of two common methods for surveying boreal lake aquatic macrophyte communities (the transect survey and the phytolittoral inventory) in lake bioassessment, we studied five small humic lakes with both methods. In addition to this pairwise comparison, we contrasted available independent sets of reference lake data of either methodological origin. Specifically, we compared the observed species richness and a number of ecological quality (community) metrics and their variability both between the methods and within them in relation to sampling effort and operator. With the phytolittoral inventory, more taxa (mean 38.8 ± s.d. 12.1) were observed than with transect surve…
Titmice are a better indicator of bird density in Northern European than in Western European forests
2022
Publisher Copyright: © 2022 The Authors. Ecology and Evolution published by John Wiley & Sons Ltd. Population sizes of many birds are declining alarmingly and methods for estimating fluctuations in species’ abundances at a large spatial scale are needed. The possibility to derive indicators from the tendency of specific species to co-occur with others has been overlooked. Here, we tested whether the abundance of resident titmice can act as a general ecological indicator of forest bird density in European forests. Titmice species are easily identifiable and have a wide distribution, which makes them potentially useful ecological indicators. Migratory birds often use information on the densit…
Are business cycles asymmetric? Some European evidence
1997
Economic thought has ofien regal'ded business cycles as asymmetric. This papel' examines the existence of asymmetries over the business cycle in three European countries: France, Germany and the United Kingdom. To analyze this issue, industrial production in these countries from 1957 to 1994 is examined, and quarterly contractions and expansions in this variable are compared. The results obtained with both parametric and nonparametric methods allow the existence of asymmetries in these countries to be questioned. El pensamiento económico ha considerado frecuentemente que los ciclos económicos son de naturaleza asimétrica. Este trabajo examina la existencia de asimetrías en los ciclos económ…
The social costs of bank market power: Evidence from Mexico
2008
This paper estimates the social costs of market power (Harberger's triangle) in the Mexican banking system over the period 1993–2005. It also tests the so-called “quiet life” hypothesis which postulates a negative effect of market power on bank management efficiency. The social cost attributable to market power in 2005 is 0.15% of GDP, while that deriving from the cost (profit) inefficiency of banking management is 0.021% (0.075%) of GDP. The results allow us to reject the quiet life hypothesis in the deposits market. However, market power in the setting of the interest rate on loans has a negative effect on cost efficiency. Coordinates of the Relationship Between Taxation and Competitiveness in the European Union
2018
Through specialized studies and research, from the analysis of the specific fiscal indicators is demonstrated the role of taxation for growth and economic development. Since the progress and development of a country is closely related to the level of competitiveness, through this article we will identify the main coordinates of the relationship between taxation and competitiveness. Starting from the structure of the Global Competitiveness Index pillars we will identify the fiscal and budgetary components found directly or indirectly in the construction of the index. Without claiming an exhaustive approach, taking into account the specificity of the fiscal policy of the European Union, we wi…
Challenges of nation-branding for stimulation of Latvian exports
2017
Abstract The presented research aims to contribute to the conceptualisation of the nation-brand of Latvia with the purpose of stimulation of national export performance. The subject of the research is three aspects presumably challenging the branding of Latvia with reference to national export development. The investigated challenges are the barriers and opportunities for green-branding of Latvia; the absence of the generally accepted indication of the geographical identity of the Baltic region; and the contradictable popular image of Latvia as a cheap country. The research poses two research questions inquiring into the issues of nation-branding of Latvia currently being faced in the conte…
