The issue of «Meridiana» analyses counter-terrorism and mafia strategies over the course of Italian history from a double viewpoint (both legal and historical). The contributions of the different authors follow the evolution of criminal, substantive, and procedural rules while identifying a unitary, «emerging» trait. Difficile condensare in poche righe, i tanti spunti e le diverse sollecitazioni che scaturiscono dall’ultimo libro di Gian Carlo Caselli (Le due guerre. Perché l’Italia ha sconfitto il terrorismo e non la mafia, Melampo, Milano, 2009). I piani di lettura su cui si dispiega sono diversi e ciascuno apre una prospettiva da esplorare, fornisce differenti chiavi analitiche e interpretative. Gli studi sulle organizzazioni mafiose sono stati condotti, in molti casi, con una finalità non soltanto conoscitiva, ma anche di contrasto del fenomeno. Game of Thieves and WERW-Kpath: Two Novel Measures of Node and Edge Centrality for Mafia Networks

Real-world complex systems can be modeled as homogeneous or heterogeneous graphs composed by nodes connected by edges. The importance of nodes and edges is formally described by a set of measures called centralities which are typically studied for graphs of small size. The proliferation of digital collection of data has led to huge graphs with billions of nodes and edges. For this reason, we focus on two new algorithms, Game of Thieves and WERW-Kpath which are computationally-light alternatives to the canonical centrality measures such as degree, node and edge betweenness, closeness and clustering. Northern peatlands have accumulated large stocks of organic carbon (C) and nitrogen (N), but their spatial distribution and vulnerability to climate warming remain uncertain. Here, we used machine-learning techniques with extensive peat core data (n > 7,000) to create observation-based maps of northern peatland C and N stocks, and to assess their response to warming and permafrost thaw. We estimate that northern peatlands cover 3.7 ± 0.5 million km2 and store 415 ± 150 Pg C and 10 ± 7 Pg N. Nearly half of the peatland area and peat C stocks are permafrost affected. Functional coupling of nitric oxide synthase and soluble guanylyl cyclase in controlling catecholamine secretion from bovine chromaffin cells

This study was designed to evaluate whether the enzymes of the nitric oxide/cyclic-GMP pathway, nitric oxide synthase and soluble guanylyl cyclase, are functionally coupled in controlling catecholamine secretion in primary cultures of bovine chromaffin cells. In immunocytochemical studies, 80-85% of the tyrosine hydroxylase-positive chromaffin cells also possessed phenylethanolamine-N-methyltransferase, f1p4cating their capability to synthesize epinephrine. Immunoreactivity for neuronal-type nitric oxide synthase was found in over 90% of all chromaffin cells. La investigación está centrada en la gestión médica y social de las conocidas como intersexualidades o Diferencias del Desarrollo Sexual (DSD) en el contexto español. La principal aportación de esta investigación proviene del trabajo de campo realizado, en una primera etapa, analizando los discursos y representaciones de los expertos médicos en el diagnóstico y tratamiento de la diferenciación sexual atípica; y en una segunda etapa, atendiendo a la experiencia de las personas que han sido diagnosticadas y tratadas por alguna DSD en nuestro país desde dentro o fuera de Grupos de Apoyo.
