Magnesium in Aging, Health and Diseases

2021

Several changes of magnesium (Mg) metabolism have been reported with aging, including diminished Mg intake, impaired intestinal Mg absorption and renal Mg wasting. Mild Mg deficits are generally asymptomatic and clinical signs are usually non-specific or absent. Asthenia, sleep disorders, hyperemotionality, and cognitive disorders are common in the elderly with mild Mg deficit, and may be often confused with age-related symptoms. Chronic Mg deficits increase the production of free radicals which have been implicated in the development of several chronic age-related disorders. Numerous human diseases have been associated with Mg deficits, including cardiovascular diseases, hypertension and s…

Does the association of therapeutic exercise and supplementation with sucrosomial magnesium improve posture and balance and prevent the risk of new f…

2021

Abstract Background Fracture of the proximal femur is the most feared complication of osteoporosis. Given the numerous physiological functions that magnesium performs in our body, in the literature there is a correlation between osteoporosis and low serum levels of magnesium. Aim Evaluate the incidence of hypomagnesemia in patients with lateral fragility fracture of the proximal femur, the possible correlation between serum magnesium levels and fractures, and the effectiveness of supplementing Sucrosomial® magnesium associated with therapeutic exercise on the outcome of these patients. Methods We divided the study into two parts. In the first part, we assessed the preoperative incidence of …

Magnesium and type 2 diabetes.

2015

Type 2 diabetes is frequently associated with both extracellular and intracellular magnesium (Mg) deficits. A chronic latent Mg deficit or an overt clinical hypomagnesemia is common in patients with type 2 diabetes, especially in those with poorly controlled glycemic profiles. Insulin and glucose are important regulators of Mg metabolism. Intracellular Mg plays a key role in regulating insulin action, insulin-mediated-glucose-uptake and vascular tone. Reduced intracellular Mg concentrations result in a defective tyrosine-kinase activity, postreceptorial impairment in insulin action and worsening of insulin resistance in diabetic patients. A low Mg intake and an increased Mg urinary loss app…

The relevance of magnesium homeostasis in COVID-19

2021

Abstract Purpose In less than one and a half year, the COVID-19 pandemic has nearly brought to a collapse our health care and economic systems. The scientific research community has concentrated all possible efforts to understand the pathogenesis of this complex disease, and several groups have recently emphasized recommendations for nutritional support in COVID-19 patients. In this scoping review, we aim at encouraging a deeper appreciation of magnesium in clinical nutrition, in view of the vital role of magnesium and the numerous links between the pathophysiology of SARS-CoV-2 infection and magnesium-dependent functions. Methods By searching PubMed and Google Scholar from 1990 to date, we…

Modelling of proton and metal exchange in the alginate biopolymer.

2005

Acid-base behaviour of a commercial sodium alginate extracted from brown seaweed (Macrocystis pyrifera) has been investigated at different ionic strengths (0.1or=I/mol l(-1)or=1.0) and in different supporting electrolytes (Et4NI, NaCl, KCl, LiCl, NaCl+MgCl2), with the aim of examining the influence of ionic medium on the proton-binding capacity and of quantifying the strength of interaction with light metal ions in the perspective of speciation studies in natural aqueous systems. Potentiometric ([H+]-glass electrode) and titration calorimetric data were expressed as a function of the dissociation degree (alpha) using different models (Henderson-Hasselbalch modified, Högfeldt three parameter…

Cyclopentadienylmolybdenum(II) and -(III) complexes containing diene and allyl ligands. Part 4. Reactivity studies of the bisallyl complex CpMo(supin…

1998

Abstract Compound CpMo( η 3 -C 3 H 5 ) 2 , 3, has been synthesized from CpMoCl 4 and four equivalents of allylmagnesium bromide. While the compound is stable in donor solvents at room temperature, warming in refluxing MeCN induces the formation of 1,5-hexadiene by a metal-mediated allyl-allyl coupling process. Treatment of 3 with Bu t NC at room temperature affords CpMo( η 3 -C 3 H 5 )(Bu t NC) 2 , 4. A similar reduction with presumed allyl radical loss occurs for [CpMo( η 3 -C 3 H 5 )( η 4 -C 4 H 6 )] + , [1c] + , to afford [CpMo( η 4 -C 4 H 6 )(Bu t NC) 2 ] + , 5. Treatment of [1c] + with methyllithium affords two products, the major one (1c) corresponding to the one-electron reduction pa…

Electrical resistivity of amorphous simple metals at moderately low temperatures

1999

Abstract The dependence of electrical resistivity ρ ( T ) on temperature T in a region of moderate temperatures is considered for amorphous simple metals. It is shown within the Faber–Ziman theory that the ratio [ ρ ( T )− ρ (0)]/ T 2 has a maximum in the temperature region 10 K⩽ T ⩽100 K The theory is illustrated by numerical calculations performed for hard-sphere models of amorphous Mg and Zn.

Environmentally friendly LC for the simultaneous determination of ascorbic acid and its derivatives in skin-whitening cosmetics

2008

Ascorbic acid (AA), also known as vitamin C, is a very popular skin-whitening agent used in cosmetics. However, the use of AA (and also its sodium or magnesium salts) in cosmetic products is limited owing to its labile oxidative properties. In order to avoid its early degradation, different derivatives have been designed, such as ascorbyl phosphate (APH; as magnesium or sodium salts) and ascorbyl palmitate (AP), and more recently the ascorbyl glucoside (AG). Bearing in mind that all these chemicals in skin-whitening cosmetic products must be determined in order to control the efficacy of such products, this paper focuses on developing a wide-ranging LC analytical method able to determine th…

A chemometric study of the simultaneous determination of calcium and magnesium in natural waters

1999

A method for the simultaneous spectrophotometric determination of calcium and magnesium in mineral waters with an FIA system is tested. The method is based on the reaction between the analytes and arsenazo(III) at pH 8.5. The calculations of the amounts of both analytes in the samples are carried out with the H-point standard addition method (HPSAM) for ternary mixtures, and with a partial least squares (PLS) model after a proper variable selection. The results obtained for the determination of calcium were comparable using both methods. The employment of the HPSAM brings to our attention the influence of the calcium concentration in the sample to the development of the reaction between mag…

Simultaneous spectrophotometric determination of calcium and magnesium in mineral waters by means of multivariate partial least-squares regression.

1997

A method for simultaneous spectrophotometric determination of calcium and magnesium in mineral waters using multivariate calibration methods is proposed. The method is based on the development of the reaction between the analytes and Methylthymol Blue at pH 11. Two operational modes were used: static (spectral information) and flow injection (FI) (spectral and kinetic information). The selection of variables was studied. A series of synthetic solutions containing different concentrations of calcium and magnesium were used to check the prediction ability of the partial least-squares models. The method was applied to the analysis of mineral waters and the results were compared with those obta…
