Timing of the Accreting Millisecond Pulsar XTE J1814-338

2006

We present a precise timing analysis of the accreting millisecond pulsar XTE J1814-338 during its 2003 outburst, observed by RXTE. A full orbital solution is given for the first time; Doppler effects induced by the motion of the source in the binary system were corrected, leading to a refined estimate of the orbital period, P_orb=15388.7229(2)s, and of the projected semimajor axis, a sini/c= 390.633(9) lt-ms. We could then investigate the spin behaviour of the accreting compact object during the outburst. We report here a refined value of the spin frequency (nu=314.35610879(1) Hz) and the first estimate of the spin frequency derivative of this source while accreting (nu^dot=(-6.7 +/- 0.7) 1…

Resonant Raman scattering in quantum wells in high magnetic fields: Deformation-potential interaction.

1992

A theoretical study of one-phonon resonant Raman scattering in a quantum well (QW) in high magnetic fields has been performed. The Raman profiles are calculated as a function of magnetic field, quantum-well thickness, and laser frequency. The basic theory is first developed assuming parabolic masses in the plane perpendicular to the growth direction of the QW. Selection rules for deformation-potential-allowed scattering are given and a compact analytical expression for the Raman-scattering efficiency is obtained for infinite barriers. The double-resonance conditions are derived as a function of the magnetic field or well thickness. In a second part of the work, the heavy-hole\char21{}light-…

Numerical Study of Forced MHD Convection Flow and Temperature Around Periodically Placed Cylinders

2016

In this paper we consider 2D stationary boundary value problems for the system of magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) equations and the heat transfer equation. The viscous electrically conducting incompressible liquid moves between infinite cylinders with square or round sections placed periodically. We also consider similar 2D MHD channel flow with periodically placed obstacles on the channel walls. We analyse the 2D forced and free MHD convection flow and temperature around cylinders and obstacles in homogeneous external magnetic field. The cylinders, obstacles and walls of the channel with constant temperature are heated. The distributions of electromagnetic fields, forces, velocity and temperatur…

Mean electromotive force in turbulent shear flow.

2002

We consider the mean electromotive force in turbulent shear flow taking into account the stretching of turbulent magnetic field lines by the mean flow. The mean flow can change the properties of magnetohydrodynamics-turbulence in such a way that turbulent motions become suitable for the dynamo action. The contribution of shear to the mean electromotive force cannot be described in terms of the alpha effect. The instability of the mean field arises if shear is sufficiently strong. The growth rate of instability depends on the length scale of the mean field being higher for the field with a smaller length scale. The considered mechanism may be responsible for the generation of large-scale mag…

Dynamics of an elongated magnetic droplet in a rotating field

2002

A model is proposed for the dynamics of an elongated droplet under the action of a low frequency rotating magnetic field. This model determines a set of critical frequencies at which the transitions to more complex bent shapes take place. These transitions occur through propagation of jumps of the droplet's axial tangent angle described by a nonlinear singularly perturbed partial differential equation with the intrinsic viscosity of the droplet playing the regularizing role.

Effect of a Steady Magnetic Field and Imposed Rotation of Vessel on Heat and Mass Transfer in Swirling Recirculating Flows

1999

A simplified theoretical model for the solidification interface shape prediction is introduced and tested. We linearised a coupled hydrodynamic-solidification problem about the state with a flat interface. In such a way we split the problem into a hydrodynamic part with a flat solid-liquid front and a solidification part with a calculated heat flux from the liquid phase. The method allows obvious conclusions on optimum heat conditions near the solidification interface providing its flatness and maximum pulling velocity at the same time. Comparison to the results by FLUENT package showed that the method provides a reasonable accuracy even for a noticeably deformed interface shape. Another pa…

Linear and non-linear stability of a thermally stratified magnetically driven rotating flow in a cylinder

2010

The stability of a thermally stratified liquid metal flow is considered numerically. The flow is driven by the rotating magnetic field in a cylinder heated from above and cooled from below. The stable thermal stratification turns out to destabilise the flow. This is explained by the fact that a stable stratification suppresses the secondary meridional flow, thus indirectly enhancing the primary rotation. The instability in the form of Taylor-Görtler rolls is consequently promoted. It is known from earlier studies that these rolls can be only excited by finite disturbances in the isothermal flow. A sufficiently strong thermal stratification transforms this non-linear bypass instability into …

Drift of ferrocolloids through a cylindrical grid by magnetic force

2011

The subject of the paper is to investigate the coupling phenomena of magnetic and non-uniform temperature fields in ferrofluids. The coupling creates a special kind of mass transfer and an inhomogeneous concentration of ferrofluid arises especially near bodies, where higher field gradients are present. Particular attention is paid to the oriented mass transfer, i.e. the magnitude and direction of ferrofluid flux with respect to the temperature gradient and magnetic field. Quantitatively, oriented phoretic transport can be characterized by the magnetic Soret coefficient and osmotic pressure difference. The problem is solved using two-dimensional (2D) numerical simulations for the periodic st…

Thermal Diffusion and Particle Separation in Ferrocolloids

1999

Results of experiments on thermal diffusion in ferrocolloids are discussed in the paper. The Soret coefficient is evaluated from measurements of particle separation in thermodiffusion column. To interpret the separation curves measured in the presence of a magnetic field, the column theory is modified taking into account for MHD effects of free convection. It is shown that the Hartmann effect in hydrocarbon based colloids as well in ionic magnetic fluids does not influence significantly the particle separation dynamics. From unsteady separation curves positive values of the Soret coefficient of surfacted particles in tetradecane based colloids are calculated. Such direction of particle tran…

Measurement of the anomalous precession frequency of the muon in the Fermilab Muon g−2 Experiment

2021

The Muon g-2 Experiment at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory (FNAL) has measured the muon anomalous precession frequency $\omega_a$ to an uncertainty of 434 parts per billion (ppb), statistical, and 56 ppb, systematic, with data collected in four storage ring configurations during its first physics run in 2018. When combined with a precision measurement of the magnetic field of the experiment's muon storage ring, the precession frequency measurement determines a muon magnetic anomaly of $a_{\mu}({\rm FNAL}) = 116\,592\,040(54) \times 10^{-11}$ (0.46 ppm). This article describes the multiple techniques employed in the reconstruction, analysis and fitting of the data to measure the preces…
