An evaluation of exposure metrics in an epidemiologic study on radio and television broadcast transmitters and the risk of childhood leukemia.

Electric field strength values calculated by wave propagation modeling were applied as an exposure metric in a case–control study conducted in Germany to investigate a possible association between radio frequency electromagnetic fields (RF-EMF) emitted from television and radio broadcast transmitters and the risk of childhood leukemia. To validate this approach it was examined at 850 measurement sites whether calculated RF-EMF are an improvement to an exposure proxy based on distance from the place of residence to a transmitter. Efficient full decay inversion of MRS data with a stretched-exponential approximation of the distribution

SUMMARY We present a new, efficient and accurate forward modelling and inversion scheme for magnetic resonance sounding (MRS) data. MRS, also called surface-nuclear magnetic resonance (surface-NMR), is the only non-invasive geophysical technique that directly detects free water in the subsurface. Based on the physical principle of NMR, protons of the water molecules in the subsurface are excited at a specific frequency, and the superposition of signals from all protons within the excited earth volume is measured to estimate the subsurface water content and other hydrological parameters. Mhd-Modeling of the Propagation of a Coronal Mass Ejection

Hydrodynamic modeling of the propagation of a density perturbation launched upwards in the solar corona has been shown to explain some features of a Coronal Mass Ejection (CME) observed in detail with the SoHO/UVCS, but left open the questions of the evidence of thermal insulation of the CME and of its large expansion factor. We investigate whether the interaction with the coronal magnetic field is able to explain these aspects, by performing magnetohydrodynamic simulations. Observation of the cosmic ray moon shadowing effect with the ARGO-YBJ experiment

Cosmic rays are hampered by the Moon and a deficit in its direction is expected (the so-called Moon shadow). The Moon shadow is an important tool to determine the performance of an air shower array. Indeed, the westward displacement of the shadow center, due to the bending effect of the geomagnetic field on the propagation of cosmic rays, allows the setting of the absolute rigidity scale of the primary particles inducing the showers recorded by the detector. On magnetic guidance of charged particles

High precision beta decay experiments with polarized neutrons, employing magnetic guiding fields for the decay electrons in combination with energy dispersive detectors, initiated detailed studies of the point spread function (PSF) for homogeneous magnetic fields. A PSF describes the radial probability distribution of mono-energetic electrons at the detector plane which were emitted from a point-like source. Before finishing my Ph.D. in September 1986, I had already a non permanent position at the University of Valencia, it was called at this time assistant professor (profesor ayudante), with a lot of teaching. I sent a letter to Manuel at the beginning of 1987 and, after receiving the letter, he called immediately by phone my thesis advisor, Prof. Alfredo Segura. Manuel told him: I have a lot of people at the moment, but if he is very good, I will accept him. Finally, he sent me an acceptation letter and I got a fellowship from the local government and the Ministry of Education. I did my postdoc from December 87 to 89.

Illustrating the processability of magnetic layered double hydroxides: layer-by-layer assembly of magnetic ultrathin films.

We report the preparation of single-layer layered double hydroxide (LDH) two-dimensional (2D) nanosheets by exfoliation of highly crystalline NiAl-NO3 LDH. Next, these unilamellar moieties have been incorporated layer-by-layer (LbL) into a poly(sodium 4-styrenesulfonate)/LDH nanosheet multilayer ultrathin film (UTF). Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), ultraviolet-visible light (UV-vis), and X-ray diffraction (XRD) profiles have been used to follow the uniform growth of the UTF. The use of a magnetic LDH as the cationic component of the multilayered architecture enables study of the resulting magnetic properties of the UTFs. A discussion of potential exposure metrics for use in epidemiological studies on human exposure to radiowaves from mobile phone base stations

There is currently a high level of concern in many countries that exposure to radiowaves from mobile phone base stations may be hazardous to health. When investigating such suggested risks, epidemiologists need to define an exposure metric that can reliably discriminate between exposed and unexposed groups of people.
