The aim of the study was to investigate intercultural adaptation of occupational immigrants to Finnish working life and culture and identify factors that support or hinder the adaptation process. Due to demographic changes in the society and the increasing number of foreigners in Finnish workplaces, the study of occupational immigration is a very contemporary topic. The study was qualitative in nature. 13 Chinese metal workers were interviewed in small groups using a translator in Mandarin Chinese. Opinnäytetyössä tarkastellaan ekspatriaattiutta, työperäistä ja määräaikaista nykysiirtolaisuuden muotoa, miestensä työn vuoksi ulkomaille muuttaneiden naisten näkökulmasta. Tutkimuksessa selvitetään ekspatriaattipuolisoiden kokemuksia suhteessa uuden asuinmaan paikalliseen kulttuuriin ja väestöön sekä ekspatriaattielämänmuotoon ja sen puolisolle asettamiin vaatimuksiin. The objective of this qualitative study is to reveal the discursive reality of Finnish women, who have chosen to follow their husbands to expatriate assignments. The research material includes interviews of seventeen (17) Finnish housewives who lived in Singapore in 1999. The primary theoretical framework of the study is a social-constructive view, in which the reality is seen to have been constructed through meanings that create and maintain cultural practices, social roles and institutions. Hyvinvointipolitiikassa puhutaan yhä enemmän ikääntyneen oikeudesta jäädä asumaan nykyiseen kotiinsa ja saada sinne tarvitsemansa palvelut. Tämä artikkeli tarkastelee narratiivisen analyysin keinoin, miten huolenpidon kokemus jäsentyy äidistään huolehtivien tytärten hoivakertomuksissa yhä vahvemmin kodissa annettavaan epäviralliseen hoivaan tukeutuvassa yhteiskunnassa. Kertomisen tavat nojautuvat neljästä narratiivisesta perusrakenteesta kolmeen: romanssiin, tragediaan ja ironiaan. Aineiston kertomukset osoittavat tapoja, miten huolenpito voi jäsentyä merkitykselliseksi osaksi elämänkulkua.
