"Ei tää hullumpi ole" : yli 60-vuotiaiden omaishoitajien etäkuntoutuksen vaikuttavuus ja kuntoutujien kokemukset
2019
Hankkeen tavoitteena oli tutkia verkkopohjaisen, hyväksymis- ja omistautumisterapiamenetelmiin perustuvan etäkuntoutusohjelman vaikutuksia yli 60-vuotiaiden omaishoitajien psyykkiseen hyvinvointiin. Hanke toteutettiin näennäiskokeellisessa asetelmassa vertaamalla keskenään ryhmiä, joista yksi osallistui 12 viikon etäkuntoutusohjelmaan (n = 60), yksi omaishoitajien laitoskuntoutukseen (n = 52) ja yksi omaishoitoyhdistysten tarjoamiin toimintoihin (n = 39). Omaishoitajien psyykkistä hyvinvointia arvioitiin tutkimuksen alussa, etäkuntoutusohjelman jälkeen 4 kuukauden välimittauksissa sekä 10 kuukauden kuluttua tutkimuksen alusta. Tässä artikkelissa raportoidaan tuloksia ja kokemuksia hankkeen …
Iäkkäiden omaishoitajien masennusoireet ja niitä selittävät tekijät
2017
Ikäihmisten määrän kasvaessa omaishoito pitkäaikaishoidon järjestämisen mahdollisuutena on yhä varteenotettavampi hoitomuoto. Tämän pro gradu -tutkielman tarkoitus on selvittää iäkkäiden omaishoitajien masennusoireisiin yhteydessä olevia tekijöitä. Tutkimusaineisto koostuu osasta Tutkimus- ja kehittämiskeskus GeroCenterin, Jyväskylän yliopiston psykologian laitoksen, Ge…

Care Poverty Within the Home Space: Exploring the Emotional Experiences of Unmet Care Needs
2021
Older adults face inequalities in care. The concept of care poverty has been developed to point out how unmet care needs are not just an individual issue but a phenomenon linked to social and economic disadvantage and societal inequality. In this paper, we approach the question of care poverty by focusing on its intertwinement with emotions and the home space. We analyze how the presence, or more commonly absence, of care shapes interviewees’ descriptions of emotional experiences tied to the home space. Our data consists of 12 semi-structured interviews conducted in 2019 and 2020 with customers of outreach work for older adults in Finland. These customers typically face a situation that can…
Simulated skiing as a measurement tool for performance in cross-country sit-skiing
2019
The International Paralympic Committee mandates the development of an evidence-based classification system, which requires a measure of performance. Performance in cross-country sit-skiing is mainly dependent on force generated during the poling phase and is enhanced by trunk flexion–extension movements. Since all sit-skiers have neuromuscular impairment, but different ability to control the trunk, this study aimed to verify if simulated action of poling on an adapted ergometer, together with a cluster analysis, could be used for grouping participants with different impairments according to their performance. On the ergometer, eight male and five female participants performed seven poling c…
Social Learning among Transplant Event Volunteers
2019
Volunteering in adapted sports competitions has not been studied as much as in other competitions. Survey data from volunteers in a supportive role at the European Transplant Sport Week 2016 in Finland were analysed to report the way involvement in the event increased knowledge of transplantation. Through social learning theory, the aim of the study was to report the associations between changes in knowledge, training and volunteering experience of supportive role volunteers. A representative sample of the adult volunteers (n=95, Male=35, Female=60; Disabled=31, non-Disabled=64; Mage=49.7y old, SD=16.8) responded to a web-based survey. Questions included self-perceived knowledge of transpla…
Do adolescents with long-term illnesses and disabilities have increased risks of sports related injuries?
2017
peer-reviewed Background: The aim of this study is to examine the rates of sports related injuries in adolescents based on the severity of their long-term illnesses or disabilities (LTID). Few injury prevention strategies in sports and health promotion have explored disaggregation by disability. Methods: Data obtained from the 2014 Finnish Health Behaviour in School-aged Children survey (n = 3716, mean age = 14.8, SD = 1.03) were grouped into adolescents with and without LTID. A further indicator or severity was determined when adolescents reported their LTID affected their participation (affected LTID). Odds ratio (95% CI) were used to determine the associations between sports related inju…
Validation study of Italian version of inventory for déjà vu experiences assessment (I-IDEA): A screening tool to detect déjà vu phenomenon in Italia…
2017
The Inventory Déjà Vu Experiences Assessment (IDEA) is the only screening instrument proposed to evaluate the Déjà vu (DV) experience. Here, we intended to validate the Italian version of IDEA (I-IDEA) and at the same time to investigate the incidence and subjective qualities of the DV phenomenon in healthy Italian adult individuals on basis of an Italian multicentre observational study. In this study, we report normative data on the I-IDEA, collected on a sample of 542 Italian healthy subjects aging between 18-70 years (average age: 40) with a formal educational from 1-19 years. From September 2013 to March 2016, we recruited 542 healthy volunteers from 10 outpatient neurological clinics i…
Experiences of people with memory disorders and their spouse carers on influencing formal care: “They ask my wife questions that they should ask me”
2021
Background People with memory disorders often need care and help from family carers and health and social care providers. Due to the deterioration of cognitive capacity and language skills, they may be unable to convey their thoughts and care preferences to other people. As a result, their agency may become restricted. We investigated the descriptions provided by people with memory disorders and spousal carers of their influence on care in encounters with formal care providers. Methods Qualitative thematic analysis was used to identify, analyze, and report themes that describe encounters with professionals in different social or healthcare environments. In-depth interview data were gathered…
