Expression of Active Streptolysin O in Escherichia coli as a Maltose-Binding-Protein-Streptolysin-O Fusion Protein. The N-Terminal 70 Amino Acids are…
1996
Streptolysin 0 (SLO) is the prototype of a family of cytolysins that consists of proteins which bind to cholesterol and form very large transmembrane pores. Structure/function studies on the pore-forming cytolysin SLO have been complicated by the proteolytic inactivation of a substantial portion of recombinant SLO (rSLO) expressed in Escherichia coli. To overcome this problem, translational fusions between the E. coli maltose-binding protein (MBP) gene and SLO were constructed, using the vectors pMAL-p2 and pMAL-c2. MBP-SLO fusion proteins were degraded if secreted into the E. coli periplasm, but intact, soluble MBP-SLO fusion proteins were produced at high levels in the cytoplasm. Active S…
Hormonal differences in intimate partner violence perpetrators when they cope with acute stress: A pilot study
2021
Background: Only a few studies have paid attention to the ability of perpetrators of intimate partner violence (IPVAW) against women to cope with acute stress, including hormonal pa-rameters. In fact, previous studies assessed how salivary testosterone (Tsal) and cortisol (Csal) changed after coping with an acute emotional stressor (directly related to IPVAW), and they con-cluded that an imbalance between the two hormones might be characteristic of these men. Never-theless, they neglected to examine the role of other hormones, such as salivary oxytocin (OXsal), which also seemed to play an important role in behavioral regulation, and whether this response could be generalized to other types…

La strutturazione del legame di attaccamento in minori esposti a violenza domestica
2017
The construction of an attachment bond in children exposed to domestic violence. The structuring of the attachment bond may be influenced by specific characteristics related to individuals and context. The aim of this study was to evaluate the quality of attachment in a family unit composed of one mother and four children, who were living in a Safe House for victims fleeing from domestic violence. Attachment was evaluated in the mother through administration of the Adult Attachment Interview (George, Kaplan, & Main, 1985) and in the children through administration of the Separation Anxiety Test (Attili, 2001). Results highlighted an insecure attachment in the mother and in the youngest chil…
Alternative Investment Fund Managers Directive and its Impact on Malta’s Financial Service Industry
2016
The introduction of the Directive on Alternative Investment Fund Managers (AIFM Directive 2011/61/EU) in 2013 means a radical transformation of the EU regulatory landscape for the whole alternative investment fund industry. Taking into account the growing meaning of the alternative investment fund industry in Europe, the aim of the paper is to assess the impact the Directive on Alternative Investment Fund Managers (AIFMD) will have on the Alternative Investment Fund Managers (AIFMs) managing Alternative Investment Funds (AIFs) in the EU. The research is based on the case of Malta, which is a quickly growing financial centre. The main findings are based on an analysis of questionnaire respon…
Effect of high methoxyl pectin on pea protein in aqueous solution and at oil/water interface
2010
International audience; The effect of the addition of high methoxyl pectin on the stability of pea protein isolate emulsions was investigated. Except for low pectin concentrations at acidic pHs where bridging flocculation occurred the addition of pectin improved emulsion stability to pH changes and depletion flocculation induced by maltodextrin addition. The mechanism of pectin induced stability was probed by measuring protein-pectin complex formation in solution, zeta potential of the emulsions droplets and the change in surface viscoelasticity on pectin addition. The phase diagrams of pectin-pea protein isolate in solution and pectin-pea protein-stabilized emulsions were established based…
L’inventario dei giogali del cavaliere Fra’ Alessio di Ferro (1700-80): alcune considerazioni sull’oreficeria tra Sicilia e Malta
2019
The article deals with the inventory, in part unpublished, of 1763 of the jewels owned by the knight of Saint John Fra 'Alessio di Ferro, which is located in the State Archives in Trapani. He was an illustrious exponent of one of the most prominent families in the centuries of the city of Trapani linked to the island of Malta. The inventory offers the opportunity to reflect on typologies, materials and styles most in vogue between the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries in the Mediterranean jewellery and, consequently, the inspiration for some transversal reflections concerning the history of the male jewelry, still little explored, among Sicily and Malta.

Regression of primary low-grade gastric mucosa-associated lymphoma by eradication of Helicobacter pylori infection: case report
2004
Objective: the Authors report their experience in diagnosis and treatment of one case of primary low-grade gastric lymphoma of mucosa associated lymphoid tissue (MALT); recent international literature review. Experimental Design: complete clinical report. Diagnostic, clinical and prognostic indication, evaluation of effectiveness of eradication therapy and short follow-up. Setting: Operative Unit of General and Thoracic Surgery. University "Paolo Giaccotie" of Palermo. Intervention: treatment of H. Pylori infection (lansoprazole, amoxicillin and metronidazole twice a day for 14 days; after that, lansoprazole for another 4 weeks), according to international guide-lines. Results: H. Pylori wa…
This paper examines Douris of Samos’ quite problematic testimony,…
