BENEFICIAL EFFECT OF PROBIOTICS ADMINISTRATION IN INFLAMMATORY BOWEL DISEASE AND RELATED SPONDYLOARTHROPATHY: A PROSPECTIVE STUDY

2015

Background: Therapeutic treatment for inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) may follow different approaches, systemic as well as local, especially when the target is the osteoarticular apparatus. Although some clinical trials have suggested benefits from probiotics administration in IBD, there is still a great deal of controversy on their use. The aim of this study was to further investigate the effects of probiotics in patients with IBD and related spondyloarthropathy. Material/Methods: Fifty-nine patients affected by IBD with extra-intestinal involvement where evaluated from 2006 to 2010. Twenty-eight patients received administration of a standard therapy with mesalazine and 31 where treated w…

Determination of crown discoloration and fluorescence induced by different medications used in regenerative endodontic procedures: An ex vivo study

2021

Background Crown discoloration is an undesirable side effect of the use of triple antibiotic paste (TAP) in regenerative endodontic procedures (REPs). The aim of this ex vivo study was to assess the potential for tooth discoloration and induction of fluorescence associated with the use of TAP containing either doxycycline (DOX) or clindamycin (CLIN), and of calcium hydroxide (Ca(OH)2), by spectrophotometric analysis and confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM). Material and methods A total of forty single-rooted human teeth extracted by therapeutic indication were used. The root canals were enlarged using the step-back technique up to a K #80 file and were randomly divided into four experi…

P255 Efficacy and safety of a restrictive ferric carboxymaltose infusion strategy for iron deficiency anemia in inflammatory bowel disease patients

2021

Abstract Background Iron deficiency anemia (IDA) is a common condition in patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and ferric carboxymaltose (FCM) has shown fast correction of hemoglobin (Hb) levels and good tolerability. We evaluated the response to FCM in IBD patients with IDA. The primary outcome was the assessment of the rate of response to single or multiple FCM infusions after 12 months from the first infusion. Secondary outcomes were the response to a single FCM infusion after 3 months and the assessment of FCM safety. Methods We retrospectively included 185 consecutive patients from IBD Unit of “Villa Sofia-V. Cervello” Hospital who received at least a dose of 500 mg FCM infus…

Associations between depression and specific childhood experiences of abuse and neglect: a meta-analysis

2015

Background\ud Research documents a strong relationship between childhood maltreatment and depression. However, only few studies have examined the specific effects of various types of childhood abuse/neglect on depression. This meta-analysis estimated the associations between depression and different types of childhood maltreatment (antipathy, neglect, physical abuse, sexual abuse, and psychological abuse) assessed with the same measure, the Childhood Experience of Care and Abuse (CECA) interview.\ud \ud Method\ud A systematic search in scientific databases included use of CECA interview and strict clinical assessment for major depression as criteria. Our meta-analysis utilized Cohen's d and…

Human herpes virus 8 interleukin-6 homologue triggers gp130 on neuronal and hematopoietic cells

2000

Human herpes virus-8 (HHV8) encodes a cytokine named viral interleukin-6 (vIL-6) that shares 25% amino-acid identity with its human homologue. Human IL-6 is known to be a growth and differentiation factor of lymphatic cells and plays a potential role in the pathophysiology of various lymphoproliferative diseases. vIL-6 is expressed in HHV8-associated-diseases including Kaposi's sarcoma, Body-cavity-based-lymphoma and Castleman's disease, suggesting a pathogenetic involvement in the malignant growth of B-cell associated diseases and other malignant tumours. We expressed vIL-6 in Escherichia coli as a fusion protein with recombinant periplasmic maltose binding protein. After cleavage from the…

A single mutation in the recombinant light chain of tetanus toxin abolishes its proteolytic activity and removes the toxicity seen after reconstituti…

1994

Specific proteolysis by the tetanus toxin light chain of a vesicle-associated membrane protein (VAMP) involved in exocytosis is thought to underlie its intracellular blockade of neurotransmitter release. To substantiate this mechanism, recombinant light chain was expressed as a maltose binding protein-light chain fusion product in Escherichia coli. After purification of affinity chromatography and cleavage with factor Xa, the resultant light chain was isolated and its identity confirmed by Western blotting and N-terminal sequencing. It exhibited activity similar to that of the native light chain in proteolyzing its target in isolated bovine small synaptic vesicles and in hydrolyzing a 62-re…

Childhood adversities and psychopathological outcomes

2015

Maltreatment of children by their parents or other caregivers is widely spread, and can cause serious injury and severe long-term consequences. Child maltreatment encompasses any acts of commission or omission by a parent or other caregiver that result in harm, potential for harm, or threat of harm to a child or adolescent (usually interpreted as up to 18 years of age), even if harm is not the intended result. In the past two decades, four forms of maltreatment have been increasingly recognised: physical abuse; sexual abuse; psychological abuse, sometimes referred to as emotional abuse; and neglect. Research from high-income countries revealed that 4–16% of children experienced severe paren…
