Awareness and knowledge of cyberethics : a study of pre-service teachers in Malta, Norway, and Spain

2021

This paper explores the awareness and knowledge of cyberethics held by pre-service teachers across three European countries. The study was conducted via an online survey and yielded 1,131 responses from pre-service teachers in Malta, Norway, and Spain. The facets of cyberethics included in this study focused on behaving responsibly online, safeguarding privacy, respecting copyright, seeking consent of friends before posting images or videos on social media platforms, and considering their professional identity as future teachers when posting online. The findings indicate that pre-service teachers reported relatively similar levels of competence in applying copyright and respecting privacy r…

WebGIS Implementation for Dynamic Mapping and Visualization of Coastal Geospatial Data: A Case Study of BESS Project

2021

Within an E.U.-funded project, BESS (Pocket Beach Management and Remote Surveillance System), the notion of a geographic information system is an indispensable tool for managing the dynamics of georeferenced data and information for any form of territorial planning. This notion was further explored with the creation of a WebGIS portal that will allow local and regional stakeholders/authorities obtain an easy remote access tool to monitor the status of pocket beaches (PB) in the Maltese Archipelago and Sicily. In this paper, we provide a methodological approach for the implementation of a WebGIS necessary for very detailed dynamic mapping and visualization of geospatial coastal data

Chemical fingerprint of outdoor PM2.5 in Malta

2015

Intro: RESPIRA (EU Funded - Italia-Malta 07-13) indicated that living in Malta is a risk factor for asthma. Aim: To determine the chemical profile of PM2.5 in Malta, and compare with reference values. Methods: Using FAI pumps at 10l/min/48hr, samples were collected on Teflon and Quartz filters from 6 schools and 46 homes in Malta. Total ICP-MS measurement (Residual+extracted), X ray Fluorescence, and thermo-optical methods(TO) were used for analysis by CNR in Rome. Aeroqual IQM60 counters were used for total PM2.5 mass. All data in ng/m3, Mean, (1st to 3rd quartile) of all 48 hour measurements.

Mediterranean waterfront Atlas: a tool for knowledge and decison-making

2012

The evolution of coastal urban and peri-urban areas between Malta and Sicily are the subject of extensive study that aims to build new tools and new approaches to planning in coastal areas. The project Italy-Malta WATERFRONT (of which the writer is a collaborator in the research activities for University of Palermo) adopts the logical and functional structure of the Atlas as a tool for understanding, interpretation, planning and monitoring of the transformations of four sample areas identified along the coastal border of Sicily and Malta. The Atlas aims to identify whether the Mediterranean territories under study require specific planning tools and, therefore, directs the decision-making p…

Waterfronts between Sicily and Malta: an integrated and creative planning approach

2012

In current global crisis, with the world’s GDPs dropping, the strong flows of financial, social and relational capitals that powered urban regeneration over the last fifteen years are no longer available to be tapped in an indiscriminate manner. Revitalising waterfront is no longer easy opportunity for long-term investments or for using the financial capital gains of hedge funds or sovereign funds, but a more creative port city has to provide precious opportunities for real development that is able to produce effects in both the domain of quality of public spaces and that of economic development. In this scenario acts an international cooperation project between Italy and Malta about waterf…

Masonry Sail Vaults in Maltese Architecture: Geometrical Analysis for the Study of Building Processes

2023

This research concerns the introduction and dissemination of masonry sail vaults in Malta between the sixteenth and the eighteenth centuries. A digital survey is produced to capture a reality-based 3D model, undertake analysis, and compare case studies with the aim of interpreting the sail vaults' construction systems.
