Bayesian assessment of times to diagnosis in breast cancer screening
2008
Breast cancer is one of the diseases with the most profound impact on health in developed countries and mammography is the most popular method for detecting breast cancer at a very early stage. This paper focuses on the waiting period from a positive mammogram until a confirmatory diagnosis is carried out in hospital. Generalized linear mixed models are used to perform the statistical analysis, always within the Bayesian reasoning. Markov chain Monte Carlo algorithms are applied for estimation by simulating the posterior distribution of the parameters and hyperparameters of the model through the free software WinBUGS.
Comparative Study of Feature classification Methods for Mass Lesion Recognition in Digitized Mammograms
2007
In this work a comparison of different classification methods for the identification of mass lesions in digitized mammograms is performed. These methods, used in order to develop Computer Aided Detection (CAD) systems, have been implemented in the framework of the MAGIC-5 Collaboration. The system for identification of mass lesions is based on a three-step procedure: a) preprocessing and segmentation, b) region of interest (ROI) searching, c) feature extraction and classification. It was tested on a very large mammographic database (3369 mammographic images from 967 patients). Each ROI is characterized by eight features extracted from a co-occurrence matrix containing spatial statistics inf…
Classifier trained on dissimilarity representation of medical pattern: A comparative study.
2005
In this paper we investigate the feasibility of some typical techniques of pattern recognition for the classification of medical examples. The learning of the classifiers is not made in the traditional features space but it can be made by constructing decision rules on dissimilarity (distance) representations. In such a recognition process a new object is described by its distances to (a subset of) the training samples. Purpose of this work is the development of an automatic classification system which could be useful for radiologists in the investigation of breast cancer. The software has been designed in the framework of the MAGIC-5 collaboration. In the automatic classification system th…
Direct Measurement of Mammographic X-Ray Spectra with a Digital CdTe Detection System
2012
In this work we present a detection system, based on a CdTe detector and an innovative digital pulse processing (DPP) system, for high-rate X-ray spectroscopy in mammography (1–30 keV). The DPP system performs a height and shape analysis of the detector pulses, sampled and digitized by a 14-bit, 100 MHz ADC. We show the results of the characterization of the detection system both at low and high photon counting rates by using monoenergetic X-ray sources and a nonclinical X-ray tube. The detection system exhibits excellent performance up to 830 kcps with an energy resolution of 4.5% FWHM at 22.1 keV. Direct measurements of clinical molybdenum X-ray spectra were carried out by using a pinhole…

A novel solution based on scale invariant feature transform descriptors and deep learning for the detection of suspicious regions in mammogram images.
2020
Background: Deep learning methods have become popular for their high-performance rate in the classification and detection of events in computer vision tasks. Transfer learning paradigm is widely adopted to apply pretrained convolutional neural network (CNN) on medical domains overcoming the problem of the scarcity of public datasets. Some investigations to assess transfer learning knowledge inference abilities in the context of mammogram screening and possible combinations with unsupervised techniques are in progress. Methods: We propose a novel technique for the detection of suspicious regions in mammograms that consist of the combination of two approaches based on scale invariant feature …
A fourier-based algorithm for micro-calcification enhancement in mammographic images
2008
Breast cancer is the most widespread cancer in women in the world; it manifests mostly in two forms: microcalcifications and massive lesions. These two forms differ in density, size, shape and number. Consequently, there are two different kinds of mammographic CAD algorithms: those for microcalcifications detection, and those for massive lesions detection. The microcalcifications detection is a hard task, since they are quite small and often poorly contrasted against the background, especially in images affected by digitization noise. In a CAD system the ROI Hunter plays an important role, because missed microcalcifications at this level are definitely lost. For this reason, highlighting me…
GPCALMA: An Italian mammographic database of digitized images for research
2006
In this work the implementation of a database of digitized mammograms is described. The digitized images were collected since 1999 by a community of physicists in collaboration with radiologists in several Italian hospitals, as a first step in order to develop and implement a Computer Aided Detection (CAD) system. 3369 mammograms were collected from 967 patients; they were classified according to the type and the morphology of the lesions, the type of the breast tissue and the type of pathologies. A dedicated Graphical User Interface was developed for mammography visualization and processing, in order to support the medical diagnosis directly on a high-resolution screen. The database has be…
Diagnostic challenges and potential early indicators of breast periprosthetic anaplastic large cell lymphoma
2020
Abstract Rationale: Anaplastic large T-cell lymphoma (BI-ALCL) is a rare primitive lymphoma described in women with breast implant prostheses, which has been arousing interest in recent years due to its potentially high social impact. The difficult diagnosis associated with the high and increasing number of prosthetic implants worldwide has led to hypothesize an underestimation of the real impact of the disease among prosthesis-bearing women. The aim of this work is to search for specific radiological signs of disease linked to the chronic inflammatory pathogenetic mechanism. Patient concerns: This work describes a case of BI-ALCL in an American woman with no personal or family history of c…
