Water relations and carbohydrate partitioning of four greenhouse-grown olive genotypes under long-term drought

2016

The four olive genotypes exhibited different responses to drought involving leaf drop and g s reductions (broad-leaved genotypes, good leaf hydration); or growth reductions (narrow-leaved genotypes, dehydration tolerance). There was minor effect on carbohydrate levels. Olive plants of broad-leaved ‘Minuta’ (MN) and ‘Nocellara del Belice’ (NB) and narrow-leaved ‘Passulunara’ (PA) and ‘Biancolilla Siracusana’ (BS) were studied to evaluate their responses to drought. In a greenhouse, 2-year-old rooted cuttings were irrigated to field capacity (WW) or with 20% of WW evapotranspiration (DS) for over 3 months. Subsequently, all pots were rewatered to field capacity for 20 days. Gravimetric soil w…

Stabilization of an enzymatic extract from Penicillium camemberti containing lipoxygenase and hydroperoxide lyase activities

2008

International audience; The stabilization of an enzymatic extract, obtained from Penicillium camemberti containing lipoxygenase (LOX) and hydroperoxide lyase (HPL) activities, was investigated using selected additives. Although the addition of KCl (86%, w/w) to the enzymatic extract decreased slightly (7%) the LOX activity, it increased HPL activity by 2.25 fold; however, the addition of dextran resulted in the inactivation of both enzymatic activities. The stability of the solid lyophilized enzymatic extract was greater in the presence of KCl than that without it, with ∼100% residual activity after 8 and 4 weeks of storage at −80 °C, for LOX and HPL, respectively. The rate constants of ina…

Short Peptide Vaccine Induces CD4+ T Helper Cells in Patients with Different Solid Cancers.

2015

Abstract Previous cancer vaccination trials often aimed to activate CD8+ cytotoxic T-cell (CTL) responses with short (8–10mer) peptides and targeted CD4+ helper T cells (TH) with HLA class II–binding longer peptides (12–16 mer) that were derived from tumor antigens. Accordingly, a study of immunomonitoring focused on the detection of CTL responses to the short, and TH responses to the long, peptides. The possible induction of concurrent TH responses to short peptides was widely neglected. In a recent phase I vaccination trial, 53 patients with different solid cancers were vaccinated with EMD640744, a cocktail of five survivin-derived short (9- or 10-mer) peptides in Montanide ISA 51VG. We m…

Mannitol-producing tobacco exposed to varying levels of water, light, temperature and paraquat

2007

Transgenic mannitol-producing (+mtlD) and wild-type (-mtlD) tobacco plants were exposed to water deficit, varying light intensities, low temperatures, and paraquat applications to test whether mannitol was involved in protection against abiotic stresses. In the water deficit experiment, -mtlD and +mtlD plants were fully irrigated [100% evapotranspiration (ET)] or received 25% ET for 40 d. Water deficit reduced the relative water content (RWC) of both types of plant starting on day 22 and the total stem length (TSL) of -mtlD 25% ET plants after 11 d, whereas TSL of +mtlD 25% ET was reduced only after 34 d. After 30 days of water deficit, a higher percentage of mature foliage was retained by …

Early Osmotherapy in Severe Traumatic Brain Injury: An International Multicenter Study

2020

The optimal osmotic agent to treat intracranial hypertension in patients with severe traumatic brain injury (TBI) remains uncertain. We aimed to test whether the choice of mannitol or hypertonic saline (HTS) as early (first 96 h) osmotherapy in these patients might be associated with a difference in mortality. We retrospectively analyzed data from 2015 from 14 tertiary intensive care units (ICUs) in Australia, UK, and Europe treating severe TBI patients with intracranial pressure (ICP) monitoring and compared mortality in those who received mannitol only versus HTS only. We performed multi-variable analysis adjusting for site and illness severity (Injury Severity Score, extended IMPACT scor…

Lung Preservation With Perfadex or Celsior in Clinical Transplantation: A Retrospective Single-Center Analysis of Outcomes.

2015

BACKGROUND Despite improvement of lung preservation by the introduction of low-potassium dextran (LPD) solution, ischemia-reperfusion injury remains a major contributor to early post-lung transplant graft dysfunction and mortality. After favorable experimental data, Celsior solution was used in our clinical lung transplant program. Data were compared with our historic LPD cohort. METHODS Between January 2002 and January 2005, 209 consecutive lung transplantations were performed with LPD. These were compared to 208 transplants between February 2005 and September 2007 with Celsior. Endpoints included posttransplant PaO2/FiO2 ratio at different timepoints after intensive care unit (ICU) admiss…

Melatonin protects human red blood cells from oxidative hemolysis: new insights into the radical-scavenging activity.

1999

Antioxidant activity of melatonin in human erythrocytes, exposed to oxidative stress by cumene hydroperoxide (cumOOH), was investigated. CumOOH at 300 microM progressively oxidized a 1% suspension of red blood cells (RBCs), leading to 100% hemolysis in 180 min. Malondialdehyde and protein carbonyls in the membrane showed a progressive increase, as a result of the oxidative damage to membrane lipids and proteins, reaching peak values after 30 and 40 min, respectively. The membrane antioxidant vitamin E and the cytosolic reduced glutathione (GSH) were totally depleted in 20 min. As a consequence of the irreversible oxidative damage to hemoglobin (Hb), hemin accumulated into the RBC membrane d…

Thermal behaviour of anhydrous, dihydrate and (2/1) ethanol forms of 1-O-α-d-glucopyranosyl-d-mannitol

1998

Abstract The melting points of anhydrous 1-O-α- d -glucopyranosyl- d -mannitol, 1-O-α- d -glucopyranosyl- d -mannitol dihydrate and a new compound, 1-O-α- d -glucopyranosyl- d -mannitol-ethanol (2/1) were determined using differential scanning calorimetry. The melting onset values were 169.2 (3), 104.3 (18) and 158.7 (9), respectively, and the melting peak values were 171.4 (5), 107.9 (15) and 160.1 (6), respectively. 1-O-α- d -glucopyranosyl- d -mannitol dihydrate and 1-O-α- d -glucopyranosyl- d -mannitol-ethanol (2/1) decompose to anhydrous form when heated at slow heating rates. According to TG-FTIR measurements, 1-O-α- d -glucopyranosyl- d -mannitol-ethanol (2/1) lost its ethanol in the…

An Investigation of the Seasonal Pattern of Mannitol Content in Deciduous and Evergreen Species of the Oleaceae Growing in Northern Sicily

2002

In several species of the Oleaceae, mannitol, already present at considerable levels, accumulates in response to stress. This family comprises both deciduous and evergreen species, and we investigated the role of mannitol in deciduous malacophyll and evergreen sclerophyll species growing under the same conditions in the field. The relationship between mannitol content and changes in rainfall or temperature was also studied. The mannitol content of leaves of Fraxinus ornus L., F. angustifolia Vahl., Olea europaea L. and Phillyrea media L. was determined by gas chromatography. Leaf samples were collected once a month for 1 year. In the two ash species, the seasonal pattern of mannitol content…
