An electrophysiological study of print processing in kindergarten: the contribution of the visual n1 as a predictor of reading outcome.

Sensitivity to print is characterized by a left occipito-temporal negativity to words in the event-related potential N1. This sensitivity is modulated by reading skills and may thus represent a neural marker of reading competence. Here we studied the development of the N1 in regular and poor readers from preschool age to school age to test whether the amplitude of the N1 predicts children's reading outcomes. Our results suggest a predictive value of the print-sensitive negativity over the right hemisphere. Whether this N1 may serve as a biomarker to improve prognosis in preliterate children should be clarified in future studies.

Effects of different kinds of essentiality on sequence evolution of human testis proteins

We asked if essentiality for either fertility or viability differentially affects sequence evolution of human testis proteins. Based on murine knockout data, we classified a set of 965 proteins expressed in human seminiferous tubules into three categories: proteins essential for prepubertal survival (“lethality proteins”), associated with male sub- or infertility (“male sub-/infertility proteins”), and nonessential proteins. Esr, a second locus in the house mouse controlling esterase-5

Electrophoretic variation characterized by the presence (ES-5B+) or absence (ES-5B−) of esterase-5B in the plasma of the house mouse has been observed. It is suggested that the expression of esterase-5B is controlled by an autosomal locus, Esr, linked to Ldr-1 on chromosome 6, in addition to the presumptive structural locus Es-5, which is located on chromosome 8. A gene order of Lyt-3-Esr-Ldr-1 was determined by two crosses.

Genetic control of male cuticular hydrocarbons in Drosophila melanogaster

0016-6723 (Print) Comparative Study Journal Article; 7-tricosene (7-T) and 7-pentacosene (7-P) are the two main hydrocarbons on the cuticle of male Drosophila melanogaster. These two substances might play a pheromonal role during courtship behaviour. We investigated the genetic basis of the quantitative polymorphism observed in the production of 7-T and 7-P. Strains of different geographic origin, with males producing either predominantly 7-T or predominantly 7-P, were hybridized with strains carrying genetic markers. SummaryAcromesomelic dysplasias are skeletal disorders that disproportionately affect the middle and distal segments of the appendicular skeleton. We report genetic mapping studies in four families with acromesomelic dysplasia Maroteaux type (AMDM), an autosomal recessive osteochondrodysplasia. A peak LOD score of 5.1 at recombination fraction 0 was obtained with fully informative markers on human chromosome 9. The genetic architecture of sexually selected traits in two natural populations of Drosophila montana

We investigated the genetic architecture of courtship song and cuticular hydrocarbon traits in two phygenetically distinct populations of Drosophila montana. Purification and characterization of rat-liver cytosolic epoxide hydrolase.

Rat liver cytosolic epoxide hydrolase has been purified and characterized. The enzyme was purified from tiadenol-induced rat liver 540-fold with respect to trans-stilbene oxide as a substrate. Similar purification was obtained with the substrates trans-beta-ethyl styrene oxide and styrene 7,8-oxide, the specific activities decreasing in the order trans-beta-ethyl styrene oxide greater than styrene 7,8-oxide greater than trans-stilbene oxide. The enzyme exerts highest activity at pH 7.4 Km and Vmax of the pure enzyme for trans-stilbene oxide were 1.7 microM and 205 nmol x min-1 x mg protein-1 respectively. Early emergence of deviant frontal fMRI activity for phonological processes in poor beginning readers.

Phonological awareness refers to the ability to perceive and manipulate the sound structure of language and is especially important when children learn to read. Poor phonological awareness is considered the major cause for the emergence of reading difficulties. Nucleus incertus contribution to hippocampal theta rhythm generation.

The hippocampal theta rhythm is generated by the pacemaker activity of the medial septum-diagonal band of Broca (MS/DBB) neurons. These nuclei are influenced by brainstem structures that modulate the theta rhythm. The aim of the present work is to determine whether the nucleus incertus (NI), which has important anatomical connections with the MS/DBB, contributes to the hippocampal theta rhythm generation in rats. Hippocampal field activity was recorded in urethane-anaesthetized rats.
