In the southern and eastern area of the Côte d’Île-de-France, north of the marshes of Saint-Gond (Marne, France), research incorporating a great deal of unpublished documentation, and the results of pedestrian and aerial surveys, has highlighted five flint mines. For various reasons, the many indications of mining activity in this region have never been considered sufficient to consider it a mining area, however, the combination of a series of objective observations suggests the existence of five flint mines.In several sites, flint mining was conducted from shafts several metres deep, sometimes connected by galleries. Generation of a proton potential by succinate dehydrogenase of Bacillus subtilis functioning as a fumarate reductase

The membrane fraction of Bacillus subtilis catalyzes the reduction of fumarate to succinate by NADH. The activity is inhibited by low concentrations of 2-(heptyl)-4-hydroxyquinoline-N-oxide (HOQNO), an inhibitor of succinate: quinone reductase. In sdh or aro mutant strains, which lack succinate dehydrogenase or menaquinone, respectively, the activity of fumarate reduction by NADH was missing. In resting cells fumarate reduction required glycerol or glucose as the electron donor, which presumably supply NADH for fumarate reduction. Phytotoxic effects of Lantana camara, Eucalyptus camaldulensis and Eriocephalus africanus essential oils in weeds of Mediterranean summer crops

Abstract The essential oil composition of Lantana camara , Eucalyptus camaldulensis and Eriocephalus africanus was analyzed by means of GC and GC–MS and bioassayed in order to determine their activity against Amaranthus hybridus and Portulaca oleracea . E. camaldulensis essential oil, with spathulenol as the main compound, was the most effective, completely inhibiting germination and seedling growth on both weeds. The essential oil of E. africanus , rich in artemisia ketone, showed activity similar to that of E. camaldulensis on A. hybridus , but it was not so effective against P. oleracea , and L. camara essential oil, with high percentages in sesquiterpene hydrocarbons, also showed higher…
