EFFETTI DELLA PROTEZIONE E DELLA COMPLESSITÀ TOPOGRAFICA SUI POPOLAMENTI BENTONICI DEI REEF A VERMETI

2009

Vermetid reef can be considered a key intertidal habitat of Mediterranean Sea and increasing knowledge about this natural system is important for its conservation. Aims of this study is to assess topography complexity, structure and composition of the benthic assemblages associated to reef formation in a marine protected area highlighting possible effects of the protection.

Waste heat recovery from a marine waste incinerator using a thermoelectric generator

2012

Published version of an article published in the journal: Journal of Electronic Materials. Also available from the publisher at: http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/s11664-012-2009-6 A marine waste incinerator has been evaluated for waste heat harvesting using thermoelectric generators (TEG). The application has been evaluated using mathematical modeling to optimize the heat exchanger and some vital design parameters of the TEG. The calculation shows that it is possible to extract 58 kW el at a price of 6.6 US$/W from an 850-kW th incinerator when optimizing for maximum power. However, minimizing the cost, it is possible to get 25 kW el at a price of 2.5 US$/W. A trade-off between the two targets lea…

Practice for determining friction in hydraulic winch systems

2020

This paper presents a method for estimating friction in hydraulic active heave compensated (AHC) offshore winches. The method is a two-step approach where the first step is to model the friction loss in the hydraulic motors based on data from the sub-supplier. The second step requires real-life testing, where the remaining friction losses in the winch system is identified and modeled. In this context, a practice is characterized by obtaining a friction loss estimation with the highest possible accuracy over the widest possible range of operating conditions with a limited amount of experimental work. The method benefits from the use of parametric models, sub-supplier data, and real-life meas…

The mitogen-activated protein kinase p38 pathway is conserved in metazoans: Cloning and activation of p38 of the SAPK2 subfamily from the sponge Sube…

2000

Our recent data suggest that during auto- and allograft recognition in sponges (Porifera), cytokines are differentially expressed. Since the mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) signal transduction modulates the synthesis and release of cytokines, we intended to identify one key molecule of this pathway. Therefore, a cDNA from the marine sponge Suberites domuncula encoding the MAPK was isolated and analyzed. Its encoded protein is 366 amino acids long (calculated Mr 42 209), has a TGY dual phosphorylation motif in protein kinase subdomain VIII and displays highest overall similarity to the mammalian p38 stress activated protein kinase (SAPK2), one subfamily of MAPKs. The sponge protein w…

Zastosowanie badań biomonitoringowych do oceny zanieczyszczenia metalami ciężkimi wybranych ekosystemów

2016

Celem przeprowadzonych badań był biomonitoring zanieczyszczenia wybranymi metalami ciężkimi: Mn, Fe, Cu, Zn, Cd, Ni i Pb terenu w pobliżu zbiornika Janów (woj. W nielicznych miejscach pomiaro…

Phosphorus limitation enhances parasite impact: feedback effects at the population level

2014

Background Nutrient deficiency affects the growth and population dynamics of consumers. Endoparasites can be seen as consumers that drain carbon (C) or energy from their host while simultaneously competing for limiting resources such as phosphorus (P). Depending on the relative demands of the host and the parasite for the limiting nutrient, intensified resource competition under nutrient limitation can either reduce the parasite’s effect on the host or further reduce the fitness of the nutrient-limited host. So far, knowledge of how nutrient limitation affects parasite performance at the host population level and how this affects the host populations is limited. Results We followed the popu…
