Crocus sativus L. Ecotypes from Mediterranean Countries: Phenological, Morpho-Productive, Qualitative and Genetic Traits

2021

The characterization of C. sativus ecotypes is of great interest for preserving them from a possible genetic erosion due to the decrease of European cultivation surface. In this study, we evaluated four ecotypes from Italy (Sardinia and Abruzzo), Spain (Castilla-La Mancha), and Greece (Kozani) in order to detect the existence of variability and promote the biodiversity of this crop. Thirty-one traits related to saffron flowering, flower morphology, production of spice and daughter corms, vegetative development (leaf and corm traits), and spice quality, were evaluated. In addition, a genetic analysis through three PCR-based approaches, SSRs, RAPD, and SRAP was assessed. Results highlighted a…

Chemical–Physical, sensory analyses and consumers’ quality perception of local vs. imported loquat fruits: a sustainable development perspective

2020

Local products and their distribution through short supply chains play a key role in the sustainable development of many rural areas, as affirmed by the 2030 Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) Agenda. Moreover, in the last years, more and more consumers have shown a specific interest towards local production, pushed by the need for healthy eating, protecting the environment, and boosting the local economy. However, the cultivation of local fruit varieties or ecotypes has considerably decreased in the last decades because of their low production potential. As a result, many farmers have been forced to replace local orchards with few worldwide grown cultivars, causi…

Movement of forest-dependent dung beetles through riparian buffers in Bornean oil palm plantations

2022

1. Fragmentation of tropical forests is increasing globally, with negative impacts for biodiversity. In Southeast Asia, expansion of oil palm agriculture has caused widespread deforestation, forest degradation and fragmentation. 2. Persistence of forest-dependent species within these fragmented landscapes is likely to depend on the capacity of individuals to move between forest patches. In oil palm landscapes, riparian buffers along streams and rivers are potential movement corridors, but their use by moving animals is poorly studied. 3. We examined how six dung beetle species traversed riparian buffers connected to a continuous forest reserve area within an oil palm plantation in Sabah, Ma…

On Some Misconceptions Concerning Digital Banking and Alternative Delivery Channels

2016

A great deal of conceptual confusion surrounds the notions of digital banking and innovative alternative delivery channels that support banking and other financial transactions globally. The authors contend that the concepts of digital banking and associated delivery channels are ambiguous and restrictive; their usability has been undermined and their purpose and objective have, to a large extent, been misunderstood. Against this backdrop, the authors offer an inclusive definition of digital banking and delivery channels and provide logical explanations of these terms that can benefit scholars, the telecommunication sector, the banking industry, policy makers, and service providers (in term…

Regulating blockchain for sustainability? The critical relationship between digital innovation, regulation, and electricity governance

2021

Abstract Blockchain technology has found several innovative applications in the electricity industry. However, its potential has still to be discovered. This is partly due to the role that regulation plays in electricity markets. To be introduced, experimented with, and eventually adopted on a commercial scale, blockchain-supported innovations need to fit the existing regulatory framework or the rules to be reshaped or updated. We focus on energy regulators' possible responses to the blockchain-enhanced market operations (both from the incumbents and potential newcomers), suggesting a monitoring mechanism that can support innovation.

Fault-Tolerant Network-on-Chip Design for Mesh-of-Tree Topology Using Particle Swarm Optimization

2018

As the size of the chip is scaling down the density of Intellectual Property (IP) cores integrated on a chip has been increased rapidly. The communication between these IP cores on a chip is highly challenging. To overcome this issue, Network-on-Chip (NoC) has been proposed to provide an efficient and a scalable communication architecture. In the deep sub-micron level NoCs are prone to faults which can occur in any component of NoC. To build a reliable and robust systems, it is necessary to apply efficient fault-tolerant techniques. In this paper, we present a flexible spare core placement in Mesh-of-Tree (MoT) topology using Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) by considering IP core failures…

AS4 message exchange protocol consolidation through the European CEF eDelivery infrastructure

2020

Since 2014, the European Union has supported the creation of cross-border communication networks based on an AS4 eDelivery solution through the Connecting Europe Facility. This article describes the current status of the uptake of the AS4 message exchange protocol in accordance with both the European infrastructure CEF eDelivery and the European regulation n°910/2014 on electronic identification and trust services for electronic transactions in the internal market. The main objective is to present an analysis of the achieved results from the implementation of the AS4 solution in several European projects carried out during the last 12 years to verify the impact of these projects around Euro…

A Stochastic Routing Algorithm for Distributed IoT with Unreliable Wireless Links

2016

Punctual and reliable transmission of collected information is indispensable for many Internet of Things (IoT) applications. Such applications rely on IoT devices operating over wireless communication links which are intrinsically unreliable. Consequently to improve packet delivery success while reducing delivery delay is a challenging task for data transmission in the IoT. In this paper, we propose an improved distributed stochastic routing algorithm to increase packet delivery ratio and decrease delivery delay in IoT with unreliable communication links. We adopt the concept of absorbing Markov chain to model the network and evaluate the expected delivery ratio and expected delivery delay …

Controversias en la transición del libro de texto en papel y electrónico a los contenidos digitales

2018

It is suggested that, given the economic and cultural scale that the book represents in our society, the layout of the paper and digital version will live together for a long time. Therefore, textbooks will suffer a very similar fate. The current change is focused on the transformation of textbooks in digital content with different formats and access routes. Through this process, we are studying the disputes that these changes cause, whereas they reflex the level of assimilation of the technological innovations on the part of citizens. By means of ethnographic strategies, we try to understand inductively how different educational agents are accepting such innovations. The centres that we ha…
