Vibration Control of a High-Speed Precision Servo Numerically Controlled Punching Press: Multidomain Simulation and Experiments
2017
A three-degree-of-freedom mathematical vibration model of a high-speed punching press was developed in order to explore the vibration modes of the punching press. A multidomain model of the punching press was established to predict the kinematic state during different conditions, as well as the effects of load fluctuation on the motor speed. Experimental measurements of the acceleration of the punching press were carried out. The results comparison reveals that the multidomain model is consistent with the vibration model and the experimental measurements. Modal analysis and structure modification of the punching press were conducted. The foundation at the base of the punching press was impr…
Neural modelling of friction material cold performance
2008
The complex and highly non-linear phenomena involved during braking are primarily caused by friction materials’ characteristics. The final friction materials' characteristics are determined by their compositions, manufacturing, and the brake's operating conditions. Analytical models of friction materials' behaviour are difficult, even impossible, to obtain for the case of different brakes' operating conditions. That is why, in this paper, all relevant influences on the friction materials' cold performance have been integrated by means of artificial neural networks. The influences of 26 input parameters, defined by the friction materials' composition (18 ingredients), manufacturing (five pa…
Springback of thick sheet AHSS subject to bending under tension
2012
Lien vers la version éditeur : http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0020740312000677 The springback behavior of four advanced high-strength sheet steels (Dual-Phase, TRIP, ferrite-bainite) with thicknesses ranging from 1.2 to 4 mm was investigated by means of the bending-under-tension (BUT) test. The applicability of several guidelines from the literature was investigated experimentally and numerically. The monotonic decrease of springback as back force increased was confirmed for this category of sheet steels, and a general trend for the non-linear influence of the tool radius was observed. The influence of numerical factors on the predicted values of springback was investigat…
Assessment of material models through simple machining tests
2008
The accuracy of the results obtained from FEM simulation of machining operations depends on the accuracy of input data. Among these, the flow stress data of the workpiece are extremely important together with the friction along the tool-chip interface. In this study, an identification procedure for the determination of material parameters that are used for the FEM simulation of machining processes is proposed. The procedure is based on the coupling of a numerical identification procedure and Arbitrarian Lagrangian Eulerian (ALE) Finite Element simulations of turning operations. An experimental campaign was developed in order to calibrate the model and to validate the procedure. The basic id…
Modelling and Simulation of Machining Processes and Operations
2008
This chapter provides the state-of-the-art knowledge engineering and modelling techniques applied in manufacturing/machining and overviews future trends observed at a global scale. Modelling methods for machining processes and operations are classified. The chapter also highlights the multiple tasks of modelling and simulation in modern machining/manufacturing systems. The most popular techniques of numerical simulation including finite difference method and finite element method (FEM) related to mechanical and thermal problems arising in machining processes are described. Practical examples of FE models of various metal cutting operations and their importance in modern manufacturing are pr…
A Pareto optimal design approach for simultaneous control of thinning and springback in stamping processes
2009
One of the most relevant research issues in automotive field is focused on the reduction of stamped parts weight also increasing their strength. In this way, a strong research effort is developed on high strength steels which are widely utilized and they require a proper springback control. Springback reduction in sheet metal forming is a typical goal to be pursued which is conflicting with thinning reduction for instance. Thus, such problems can be considered as multi-objective ones characterized by conflicting objectives. What is more, nowadays, a great interest would be focused on the availability of a cluster of possible optimal solutions instead of a single one, particularly in an indu…
Integration of gradient based and response surface methods to develop a cascade optimisation strategy for Y-shaped tube hydroforming process design
2010
International audience; In the last years a strong research effort was produced in order to develop and design new forming technologies able to overcome the typical drawbacks of traditional forming operations. Among such new technologies, hydroforming proved to be one of the most promising. The design of tube hydroforming operations is mainly aimed to prevent bursting or buckling occurrence and such issues can be pursued only if a proper control of both material feeding history and internal pressure path during the process is performed. In this paper, a proper optimisation strategy was developed on Y-shaped tube hydroforming process which is characterized by a quite complex process mechanics…
Direct analysis of power-split CVTs: A unified method
2018
Abstract This paper provides a fast kinematic analysis method for compound power-split CVTs, which consents to identify their functional parameters. Such parameters permit the assessment of power flows, torques and efficiency, and the design of equivalent transmissions by the use of a recently published mathematical model. The same method can easily address either simpler or more complex transmissions by mean of kinematic equivalent parameters, without the need to arrange separate systems of equations. As a case study, we performed the kinematic analysis of the “Voltec” multi-mode GM transmission.
Manufacturing strategies for efficiency in energy and resources use: The role of metal shaping processes
2017
Abstract Manufacturing sector nowadays has to deal with the global need to reduce the environmental impact of human activity. As manufacturing accounts for a significant portion of the global CO 2 emissions, scientific research should be addressed to understand the environmental impact of manufacturing processes and, in the meantime, to take advantage of their full potential in reducing the overall CO 2 emissions. The present review paper aims at describing the role of metal shaping processes in reducing the environmental impact across different stages of metal components life. Actually, an increased consciousness concerning both the environmental performances of manufacturing processes and…
On the impact of recycling strategies on energy demand and CO2 emissions when manufacturing Al-based components
2016
Abstract The industrial world is facing the challenge of reducing emissions by means of energy- and resource-efficient manufacturing strategies. In some cases, the exerted emissions and the energy demands related to conventional manufacturing processes are not as intensive as those required to extract and produce the raw materials of which the workpieces are made. Therefore, the consciousness of the impact of material usage and the eco-informed choice of the end-of-life scenarios are both needed in view of sustainable development. Aim of this paper is to offer a contribution to a better understanding of the environmental impact of forming and machining processes, for the production of Al-ba…
