Crystal field and magnetism with Wannier functions: Rare-earth doped aluminum garnets

2015

Using the recently developed method we calculate the crystal field parameters in yttrium and lutetium aluminum garnets doped with seven trivalent Kramers rare-earth ions. We then insert calculated parameters into the atomic-like Hamiltonian taking into account the electron-electron, spin-orbit and Zeeman interactions and determine the multiplet splitting by the crystal field as well as magnetic $\hat{g}$ tensors. We compare calculated results with available experimental data.

Proton reduction by phosphinidene-capped triiron clusters

2021

Bis(phosphinidene)-capped triiron carbonyl clusters, including electron rich derivatives formed by substitution with chelating diphosphines, have been prepared and examined as proton reduction catalysts. Treatment of the known cluster [Fe3(CO)9(µ3-PPh)2] (1) with various diphosphines in refluxing THF (for 5, refluxing toluene) afforded the new clusters [Fe3(CO)7(µ3-PPh)2(κ2-dppb)] (2), [Fe3(CO)7(µ3-PPh)2(κ2-dppv)] (3), [Fe3(CO)7(µ3-PPh)2(κ2-dppe)] (4) and [Fe3(CO)7(µ3-PPh)2(µ-κ2-dppf)] (5) in moderate yields, together with small amounts of the corresponding [Fe3(CO)8(µ3-PPh)2(κ1-Ph2PxPPh2)] cluster (x = -C4H6-, -C2H2-, -C2H4-, -C3H6-, -C5H4FeC5H4-). Reactive Compatibilization of PBT/EVA Blends with an Ethylene-Acrylic Acid Copolymer and a Low Molar Mass Bis-Oxazoline

2004

Polyesters and polyolefins form highly incompatible blends with poor properties and gross morphology that hinder any practical applications. In this work, the possibility to compatibilize an incompatible blend of poly(butylene terephthalate) (PBT) with ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA) by adding a bis-oxazoline compound, 2,2'-(1,3-phenylene)-bis(2-oxazoline) (PBO), and an ethylene acrylic acid copolymer (EAA) as compatibilizer precursors has been studied. The results indicate that the binary uncompatibilized blends show poor mechanical properties and a bad morphology with scarce adhesion between the phases. The situation is only slightly improved when the EAA is added while the best performance …

On the modification of the nitrile groups of acrylonitrile/butadiene/styrene into oxazoline in the melt

2000

Oxazoline functionality is well known to be highly reactive toward a lot of other functional groups like carboxyls, hydroxyls, mercaptans, and amines. In this work we report the possibility to modify the nitrile groups of an acrylonitrile/butadiene/styrene (ABS) copolymer into oxazoline in the molten state in the presence of aminoethanol as modifier agent and zinc acetate as a catalyst. The reaction has been carried out in a batch mixer and in a corotating twin screw extruder. The conversion of the nitrile groups into oxazoline has been verified by infrared spectroscopy, NMR analysis microanalysis and confirmed by thermomechanical characterization. The results indicate that the kinetic of g…

Assessing Benthic Macroinvertebrates in Relations to Environmental Variables and Revitalisation Works

2022

Abstract Macroinvertebrates of two ex-manor ponds located in Chroscina, Opole Region (Poland) were studied from 2015 to 2018 to investigate their community composition and diversity and evaluate the heterogeneity of communities on spatial and temporal scale referring to environmental variables and revitalisation work. A total of 32 taxa were recorded (at the family level, except Oligochaeta), 13 of which were Ephemeroptera, Odonata and Trichoptera, recognised as sensitive groups in lentic ecosystems. Macroinvertebrate richness and diversity varied considerably, especially in spring and summer. It was found that habitat heterogeneity influenced benthic invertebrates more than basic water par…

Self-assembly of square planar rhodium carbonyl complexes with 4,4-disubstituted-2,2′-bipyridine ligands

2020

The impact of non-covalent interactions and reaction conditions on formation and self-assembly of ionic pairs of Rh complexes with 4,4’-disubstituted bipyridine ligands ([Rh(L1)(CO)2][Rh(CO)2Cl2])n (1), [Rh(L1)2Cl2][Rh(CO)2Cl2] (2), ([Rh(L1)(CO)2][Rh(CO)2Cl2][Rh(L1)(CO)2]n([Rh(CO)2(Cl)2])n) (3), ([Rh(L2)CO2] [Rh(CO)2Cl2])n∙EtOH (4), ([Rh(L2)(CO)2])n ([Rh(CO)2Cl2])n (5) (L1 = 4,4’-dimethyl-2,2’-bipyridine, L2 = 4,4’-diamine-2,2’-bipyridine) have been studied. Packing of square planar Rh complexes favor formation of one-dimensional chains. In structure 1, the polymeric chain is formed by the alternating cationic [Rh(L1)(CO)2]+ and the anionic [Rh(CO)2Cl2]- units leading to a neutral pseudo li…

Increasing the flexural capacity of RC beams using steel angles and pre-tensioned stainless steel ribbons

2016

This article presents an experimental programme on reinforced concrete beams retrofitted with steel angles and pre-stressed stainless steel ribbons to increase their flexural strength and ductility. Two different configurations of the steel ribbon were designed, and two companion specimens for each type considered were subjected to a four-point bending test to facilitate a direct comparison in the analysis of the effectiveness of the retrofitting technique. The influence of longitudinal steel angles and transverse stainless steel ribbons is analysed, and the concrete confinement due to stainless steel ribbons examined. The strengthened beams show remarkable increments in flexural strength a…

The use of pumice lightweight concrete for masonry applications

2011

In the last two decades, the use of pumice as lightweight aggregate for concrete in structural applications has been the object of different studies. The aim was to find out if pumice can be an alternative to ordinary lightweight aggregate. The present paper is framed in this context. Here, a study is presented showing the use of pumice for making lightweight concrete units for masonry members. Through the paper, the formulation of a mix design for lightweight concrete is proposed. Then the obtained mechanical characteristics of the masonry units are discussed and compared to the code requirements. Reinforced bearing masonry walls, made with the concrete masonry units in question, were made…

FRP reinforcement for concrete structures: state-of-the-art review of application and design

2014

Fiber reinforced polymers (FRPs) are considered to be a promising alternative to steel reinforcement, especially in concrete structures subjected to an aggressive environment or to the effects of electromagnetic fields. Although attempts to develop effective reinforcement have been followed, the application of FRPs remains limited by the solution to simple structural problems that mainly appear due to the absence of design codes, significant variation in the material properties of FRP composites and limited knowledge gained by engineers as regards the application aspects of FRP composites and structural mechanics of concrete elements reinforced with FRPs. To fill the latter gap, the current…
