Daily rainfall and air temperature data were collected by IGEBU. For a given station, the number of missing daily rainfall data, MRDm (days), was determined for each month of the recording period. The monthly rainfall depth, Pm (mm), and the monthly number of rainy days, NRDm (days),were determined for each month with a complete record of daily rainfall data. For a given month, Pm was obtained by summing the daily rainfall depth values and NRDm was obtained by counting the number of days of the month characterized by a daily rainfall depth greater than zero. The number of missing daily temperature data, MTDm (days), was also determined for each month of the recording period. The mean of the…

Buccal delivery of Methimazole as an alternative means to optimize drug bioavailability: permeation studies and matrix system design

2012

The aim of this study was to investigate the potential for systemic administration of Methimazole (MMI) through the buccal mucosa as an alternative route for drug delivery. Considering that the most important restriction in buccal drug delivery could be the low permeability of the mucosa, the ability of MMI to cross the mucosal barrier was assessed. Permeation of MMI through porcine buccal mucosa was investigated ex vivo using Franz type diffusion cells, buffer solution simulating saliva or natural human saliva as donor phase. The collected data suggested that buccal mucosa does not hinder MMI diffusion and the drug crosses the membrane (Js = 0.068 mg cm-2 h-1 and Kp = 0.065 cm h-1). Matrix…

Degradation of simazine by microorganisms isolated from soils of Spanish olive fields.

2005

Special Issue: Pesticides, Microbial Functions and Biodiversity in Soil; The capability of the microbial flora isolated from an olive field soil from Andalusia to mineralize simazine has been analyzed. From this soil, a group of bacteria capable of degrading 60 mg simazine litre-1 in less than a week has been isolated. These microorganisms showed a low capacity for degrading this herbicide to carbon dioxide. When total DNA was isolated from this group of bacteria, we were able to detect by PCR the presence of only the atzC and the trzN genes. Some components of this bacterial population have been identified by sequencing of specific fragments from bacterial 16S rDNA, including Variovorax sp…

Anthropometric and pharmacotherapeutic variables on acute emesis induced by cisplatin-containing chemotherapy.

2000

OBJECTIVE: To characterize the effects of anthropometric and pharmacotherapeutic variables on acute emesis induced by cisplatin-containing regimens with dosages ·50 mg·m−2. METHODS: A prospective, cross-sectional, noncontrolled study was performed to analyze acute vomiting during the first 24 hours in patients treated in a Spanish hospital. The patients received an intravenous combination of drugs (2 doses of metoclopramide 3 mg/kg, dexamethasone 20 mg) as first-choice antiemetic therapy. Intravenous ondansetron 8 mg and dexamethasone 20 mg served as an alternative regimen in patients <30 years old with a history of extrapyramidal manifestations or emesis in previous cycles. Therapeutic …

A potential snail host of schistosomiasis in Bolivia: Biomphalaria amazonica paraense, 1966

2002

Biomphalaria amazonica Paraense, 1996 was collected from a permanent pond in the outskirts of the Bolivian city of Santa Cruz. Identification of the collected specimens was made by comparison with the original description of the species and with topotypic material in the collection of Instituto Oswaldo Cruz. Phylogenetic analysis confirmed that these Bolivian specimens belong to B. amazonica.

Reduction of nevirapine-driven HIV mutations by carbamazepine is modulated by CYP3A activity

2014

Item does not contain fulltext OBJECTIVES: The reduction in mother-to-child transmission of HIV-1 by single-dose nevirapine given at birth onset is achieved at the expense of de novo HIV-1 resistance mutations. In the VITA1 study, single-dose carbamazepine accelerated nevirapine elimination, but the accompanying trend towards fewer de novo HIV-1 mutations was statistically non-significant. METHODS: We investigated if the effect of carbamazepine was confounded by the individual variability in nevirapine metabolism and transport. RESULTS: Nine of 34 (26%) single-dose nevirapine-treated women had one or more nevirapine-associated resistance mutations, compared with 3 of 34 (9%) in the single-d…
