Minor Losses and Best Manifold Position in the Optimal Design of Paired Sloped Drip Laterals

Arranging paired laterals so that two distribution pipes extend in opposite directions from a common manifold contributes to providing more uniform pressure to all laterals in the system, increasing water use and energy efficiency of micro-irrigation. Towards this end, by neglecting emitters’ minor losses, analytical procedures to design paired drip laterals laid on uniform slopes were introduced. More recently, it was shown that for an optimal paired sloped lateral design the best position of the manifold (BMP) equals 24%. The paratext on the back cover of Margaret Mazzantini's Venuto al mondo (published in 2008, winner of Campiello Award 2009, a film in 2012, a serial tv in 2014) reports the 'prize motivation' written by the jury of Campiello, formed by important professors and literary critics. Comparing the text of the novel with the paratext of the book, the article analyses some sure results of the paratext, and also some strategic gaps and reticences.

Rafał Urban (1893-1972) był z pochodzenia Ślązakiem. Język jego utworów prozatorskich, dramatów i wierszy przesycony jest elementami rodzimej gwary. Artykuł omawia charakterystyczne dla stylu utworów gry ; słowne przybierające różne formy, od etymologii po paronomazje i kalambury. Figury te są przejawem indywidualnych upodobań autora. Pisarz bawił się językiem, wykorzystując wszelkie ku temu okazje na wszystkich poziomach systemu, od fonetyki po semantykę i składnię. Figury etymologiczne służą też semantyce wypowiedzi, pozwalają twórcy modyfikować bądź wprowadzać nowe odcienie znaczeniowe fraz, bawić czytelnika, sugerować nadrealność i niekonwencjonalność świata zdarzeń i postaci.

Modeling the probability distribution of peak discharge for infiltrating hillslopes

Hillslope response plays a fundamental role in the prediction of peak discharge at the basin outlet. The peak discharge for the critical duration of rainfall and its probability distribution are needed for designing urban infrastructure facilities. This study derives the probability distribution, denoted as GABS model, by coupling three models: (1) the Green-Ampt model for computing infiltration, (2) the kinematic wave model for computing discharge hydrograph from the hillslope, and (3) the intensity-duration-frequency (IDF) model for computing design rainfall intensity. This paper aims at scrutinizing the evolution of the retail sector and, consequently, of retailscapes in a Southern Italy city, Catania. Starting from the outputs of an empirical place-based research project carried out by the authors in the mid ’2000s, the work deepens the recent transformations occurred both in the central areas and in the suburbs, in order to explore the processes and dynamics – produced by and within the retail field – which have been shaping urban morphology and socio-economic functions in the last decade.
