GPU accelerated Monte Carlo simulations of lattice spin models

We consider Monte Carlo simulations of classical spin models of statistical mechanics using the massively parallel architecture provided by graphics processing units (GPUs). We discuss simulations of models with discrete and continuous variables, and using an array of algorithms ranging from single-spin flip Metropolis updates over cluster algorithms to multicanonical and Wang-Landau techniques to judge the scope and limitations of GPU accelerated computation in this field. For most simulations discussed, we find significant speed-ups by two to three orders of magnitude as compared to single-threaded CPU implementations.

Epigenetic involvement in Hutchinson-Gilford progeria syndrome: a mini-review.

Hutchinson-Gilford progeria syndrome (HGPS) is a rare human genetic disease that leads to a severe premature ageing phenotype, caused by mutations in the <i>LMNA</i> gene. The <i>LMNA</i> gene codes for lamin-A and lamin-C proteins, which are structural components of the nuclear lamina. HGPS is usually caused by a de novo <i>C1824T</i> mutation that leads to the accumulation of a dominant negative form of lamin-A called progerin. Progerin also accumulates physiologically in normal ageing cells as a rare splicing form of lamin-A transcripts. This is perceptual training software using achromatic stimuli with variable contrast and random noise tuned to a particular frequency bandwith. This app has been developed in the context of a study of amblyopia, carried out by professor Rosa Hernández, and is still under testing.

Reactivity of bis(cyclohexylammonium) 4-nitrophenylphosphate with SnMe3 Cl. X-ray structure of 4-NO2 C6 H4 PO4(SnMe3)2·H2 O

The reaction of bis(cyclohexylammonium) 4-nitrophenylphosphate with Me3 SnCl (1:2) under reflux in ethanol yielded the title compound 4-NO2 C6 H4 PO4(SnMe3)2H2 O (1). The X-ray crystallographic analysis achieved on single crystals obtained by slow evaporation at room temperature revealed the formation of an unexpected supramolecular coordination network. The elementary building block can be viewed as two Me3 Sn moieties linked by a bridging 4-nitrophenylphosphate ligand. The two tin atoms are five-coordinated and describe a trans-Me3 SnO2 geometry in a trigonal bipyramidal arrangement. However, the Sn atoms are distinct, exhibiting two different environments.
