Pathological gambling in adolescence: A narrative review

2018

Pathological gambling is an emerging and increasing phenomenon in Western counties. This work is aimed at reviewing the existing literature on this topic, paying special attention to its development, course and outcome in adolescence. We will explore epidemiological data, the instruments for the diagnostic and clinical assessment, the course and the outcome of the disorder, the comorbidity with other psychiatric syndromes and disorders. The main risk factors will be described at individual, social and community level. We provide an overview of the available pharmacological and psychological treatments and we report a clinical vignette in order to describe the psychological and psychopatholo…

Epigenomic k-mer dictionaries: shedding light on how sequence composition influences in vivo nucleosome positioning

2014

Abstract Motivation: Information-theoretic and compositional analysis of biological sequences, in terms of k-mer dictionaries, has a well established role in genomic and proteomic studies. Much less so in epigenomics, although the role of k-mers in chromatin organization and nucleosome positioning is particularly relevant. Fundamental questions concerning the informational content and compositional structure of nucleosome favouring and disfavoring sequences with respect to their basic building blocks still remain open. Results: We present the first analysis on the role of k-mers in the composition of nucleosome enriched and depleted genomic regions (NER and NDR for short) that is: (i) exhau…

Epitalamios e himeneos.

This study deals, from a general point of view, with the text…

Fuzzy mathematic models in economy

1986

2020

How is a specific type of emotion-related work conducts formed today? What principles guide these conducts and what effects do they have on those who work? The study of Contact Center agents allows us to understand how a set of personal qualities such as patience and good treatment of others, certain desires and personal impulses or even intimate sensations such as anguish or individual expectations have become managerialized emotions that end up modifying the inner attitudes of these agents. Within this framework, we propose a theoretical approach that integrates the work of Weber, Foucault and Elias, which invites us to reflect on a socio-emotional manner of leading one?s life (Lebensfu?h…

Oxysterol mixture in hypercholesterolemia-relevant proportion causes oxidative stress-dependent eryptosis.

2014

Background/Aims: Oxysterol activity on the erythrocyte (RBC) programmed cell death (eryptosis) had not been studied yet. Effects of an oxysterol mixture in hyper-cholesterolemic-relevant proportion, and of individual compounds, were investigated on RBCs from healthy humans. Methods: Membrane phosphatidylserine (PS) externalization, calcium entry, ROS production, amino-phospholipid translocase (APLT) activity were evaluated by cytofluorimetric assays, cell volume from forward scatter. Prostaglandin PGE2 was measured by ELISA; GSH-adducts and lipoperoxides by spectrophotometry. Involvement of protein kinase C and caspase was investigated by inhibitors staurosporin, calphostin C, and Z-DEVD-FM…

Modeling the Mechanical Behavior of the Breast Tissues Under Compression in Real Time

2017

This work presents a data-driven model to simulate the mechanical behavior of the breast tissues in real time. The aim of this model is to speed up some multimodal registration algorithms, as well as some image-guided interventions. Ten virtual breast phantoms were used in this work. Their deformation during a mammography was performed off-line using the finite element method. Three machine learning models were trained with the data from those simulations. Then, they were used to predict the deformation of the breast tissues. The models were a decision tree and two ensemble methods (extremely randomized trees and random forest). Four experiments were designed to assess the performance of th…

An Integrated fuzzy Cells-classifier

2006

The term soft-computing has been introduced by Zadeh in 1994. Soft-computing provides an appropriate paradigm to program malleable and smooth concepts. In this paper a genetic algorithm is proposed to fuse the classification results due to different distance functions. The combination is based on the optimization of a vote strategy and it is applied to cells classification.

Gastropod evidence against the Early Triassic Lilliput effect

2010

4 pages; International audience; Size reduction in the aftermath of the Permian-Triassic mass extinction event has repeatedly been described for various marine organisms, including gastropods (the Lilliput effect). A Smithian gastropod assemblage from Utah, USA, reveals numerous large-sized specimens of different genera as high as 70 mm, the largest ever reported from the Early Triassic. Other gastropods reported from Serbia and Italy are also as large as 35 mm. Size frequency distributions of the studied assemblages indicate that they were not unusually small when compared with later Mesozoic and modern faunas. The occurrence of large-sized gastropods less than 2 Ma after the Permian-Trias…
