New archaeological discoveries through magnetic gradiometry: The early Celtic settlement on Mont Lassois, France

The burial complex of the “Lady of Vix” was discovered and excavated in the 1950s at the foot of Mont Lassois (Figure 1), a mountain situated close to the town of Chatillion-sur-Seine in the Bourgogne region of France. The assemblage of the burial goods was rather extraordinary, including such items as an artfully crafted golden necklace with winged horses and a voluminous wine-mixing vessel, probably made in a Greek workshop, capable of holding 1100 liters. According to archaeological research, this member of the aristocracy must have lived during the period between 550 and 500 BCE. Abstract The current paper reports on the faunal assemblage from Structure 1 at the German Magdalenian site of Oelknitz. The composition of the fauna is characterised by a dominance of horse. The horses were exploited for meat and marrow. A strict spatial separation of carcass parts is obvious, also observed at other Magdalenian sites, where the evidence was interpreted in terms of social interaction and food sharing. This is discussed against the contextual background of the site of Oelknitz. It is suggested that the way in which Magdalenians interacted socially is independent of site function.

We studied six patients with giardiasis (five males, one female), median age 3.5 yr (range 1-11) and 12 healthy control subjects (10 males, 2 females), median age 3.5 yr (range 1-10). Intestinal biopsy and a contemporaneous secretin-cerulein test were performed in all patients, and fecal chymotrypsin was also assayed. Intestinal biopsy was normal in five of the six patients with giardiasis, whereas one of the six presented a partial atrophy of the intestinal villi. We report the case of a 54-year-old male patient hospitalized for diarrhea and weight loss (8 kg over the previous three months). At admission, we observed pale oral and conjunctival mucosa and peripheral edema of the lower limbs. Stool frequency was 8-10 per day. Laboratory data were as follows: hemoglobin, 11 g/dL; total proteins, 4.3 g/dL; albumin, 2 g/dL; pseudocholinesterase, 1248 U/L; triglycerides, 54 mg/dL; serum cholesterol, 102 mg/dL; calcium, 7.9 mg/dL. Fecal fat was 8.2 g/24 hr. Fecal chymotrypsin (FCT) was 2.3 U/g. The role of vegetables usually consumed without prior culinary treatment is known to contribute to the prevalence of foodborne diseases. Cysts and oocysts can contaminate food, which can then be the source of infection in humans. The aim of the study was to assess the occurrence of Giardia duodenalis and Cryptosporidium spp. (oo) cysts in green leafy vegetables marketed in the city of Valencia (Spain) combining parasitological methods, two real-time qPCRs and light microscopy. Drug-induced gingival hyperplasia is a serious concern both for the patient and the clinician. A 45 year-old Caucasian male patient with hypertension, who received amlodipine (10 mg/day, single dose orally) for two months, sought medical attention because of the new-onset gingival enlargement. On clinical examination a generalized and firm overgrowth of the gingival throughout the maxilla and the mandible were evident.
