Modulation of Neurological Deficits and Expression of Glutamate Receptors during Experimental Autoimmune Encephalomyelitis after Treatment with Selec…
2013
The aim of our investigation was to characterize the role of group I mGluRs and NMDA receptors in pathomechanisms of experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE), the rodent model of MS. We tested the effects of LY 367385 (S-2-methyl-4-carboxyphenylglycine, a competitive antagonist of mGluR1), MPEP (2-methyl-6-(phenylethynyl)-pyridine, an antagonist of mGluR5), and the uncompetitive NMDA receptor antagonists amantadine and memantine on modulation of neurological deficits observed in rats with EAE. The neurological symptoms of EAE started at 10-11 days post-injection (d.p.i.) and peaked after 12-13 d.p.i. The protein levels of mGluRs and NMDA did not increase in early phases of EAE (4 d.p…

1947
Referāts par godu Latvijas Republikas neatkarības proklamēšanas dienai 1947. gada 18. novembrī bēgļu nometnē Vācijā, kur Pēteris Ķiķauka uzturējās ar savu ģimeni, pirms izceļošanas uz Kanādu. Referātā tiek apskatīts latviešu tautas un Latvijas valsts liktenis pagātnē un nākotnē.
Fructose-1,6-Bisphosphate Protects Hippocampal Rat Slices from NMDA Excitotoxicity
2019
Effects of fructose 1,6-bisphosphate (F-1,6-P2) towards N-methyl-d-aspartate NMDA excitotoxicity were evaluated in rat organotypic hippocampal brain slice cultures (OHSC) challenged for 3 h with 30 &mu

Midregion PTHrP and Human Breast Cancer Cells
2010
PTHrP is a polyhormone undergoing proteolytic processing into smaller bioactive forms, comprising an N-terminal peptide, which is the mediator of the “classical” PTH-like effect, as well as midregion and C-terminal peptides. The midregion PTHrP domain (38-94)-amide was found to restrain growth and invasionin vitroof some breast cancer cell lines, causing striking toxicity and accelerating death; the most responsive being MDA-MB231, whose tumorigenesis was also attenuatedin vivo. In addition, midregion PTHrP appears to be imported in the nucleoplasm of cultured MDA-MB231 cells andin vitro, it can bind chromatin of metaphase spread preparations and also an isolated 20-mer oligonucleotide, the…

2017
The article presents the main data about Professor of Civil Engineering Arturs Tramdahs (1884–1970) life and his work at the University of Latvia (1919–1952). The inventory books of the Library of the Engineering Faculty store valuable information about his book donations to the Library – 89 books in total. These books with inscriptions and autographs by the Professor have a special cultural and historical meaning.
BIOLOGICAL EFFECTS OF JAHA, A NEW HISTONE DEACETYLASE INHIBITOR, ON CANCER CELLS FROM HUMAN BREAST EPITHELIUM
The histone deacetylase inhibitors (HDACis) are a class of chemically heterogeneous anticancer agents of which suberoylanilide hydroxamic acid (SAHA) is a prototypical member. SAHA derivatives may be obtained by the three-dimensional manipulation of the SAHA aryl cap, such as the incorporation of a ferrocene unit like that present in Jay Amin hydroxamic acid (JAHA) and homo-JAHA (Spencer et al., 2011). These metal-based SAHA analogues have been tested for their cytotoxic activity toward triple-negative MDA-MB231 breast cancer cells. The results obtained indicate that of the two compounds tested, only JAHA was prominently active on breast cancer cells with an IC50 of 8.45 μM at 72 h of treat…
Synthesis, labelling and evaluation of hydantoin-substituted indole carboxylic acids as potential ligands for positron emission tomography imaging of…
2011
The N-methyl- d-aspartate (NMDA) receptor as a type of ionotropic glutamatergic receptors is essential for physiological processes such as learning, memory and synaptic plasticity. A glutamate-induced overactivation of these receptors, accompanied by increased intracellular calcium concentration, causes cell injury and leads to a large number of acute or chronic neurological disorders, such as stroke, trauma, Parkinson's disease and Alzheimer's disease. In an attempt to visualise the glutamatergic neurotransmission in vivo with positron emission tomography, novel fluoroethoxy- and methoxy-substituted reference compounds based on the lead structure of a hydantoin-substituted indole-2-carboxy…
Fluvastatin prevents glutamate-induced blood-brain-barrier disruption in vitro.
2008
Abstract Glutamate is an important excitatory amino acid in the central nervous system. Under pathological conditions glutamate levels dramatically increase. Aim of the present study was to examine whether the HMG-CoA inhibitor fluvastatin prevents glutamate-induced blood-brain-barrier (BBB) disruption. Measurements of transendothelial electrical resistance (TEER) were performed to analyze BBB integrity in an in vitro co-culture model of brain endothelial and glial cells. Myosin light chain (MLC) phosphorylation was detected by immunohistochemistry, or using the in-cell western technique. Intracellular Ca 2+ and reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels were analyzed using the fluorescence dyes …
