Quadruple-Phase MDCT of the Liver in Patients with Suspected Hepatocellular Carcinoma: Effect of Contrast Material Flow Rate

2006

The purposes of this study were to evaluate the effect of contrast material flow rate (3 mL/sec vs 5 mL/sec) on the detection and visualization of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) with MDCT and the safety profile of iodixanol at different injection rates. In a prospective, randomized multicenter trial, 97 patients (83 men and 14 women, with a mean age of 64 years) suspected of having HCC underwent quadruple-phase (double arterial, portal venous, delayed phase) 4-16-MDCT. Patients were randomized to receive iodixanol, 320 mg I/mL (1.5 mL/kg body weight), at a flow rate of 3 mL/sec (48 patients) or 5 mL/sec (49 patients). Qualitative (lesion detection, image quality) and quantitative (liver and …

MDCT and virtual angioscopy in spontaneous aortocaval fistula

2007

Aortocaval fistula is a rare, less than 1%, but life threatening complication, of abdominal aortic aneurysm. Mortality is high but prompt recognition of the fistula can reduce mortality rate. The multidetector row CT (MDCT) findings in a 69-year-old patient with a complex medical history characterized by previous episodes of myocardial ischemia, is reported. MDCT shows an early homogeneous enhancement of the inferior vena cava, slightly dilated at the liver level and markedly narrowed above the renal vein due to aneurysm compression. The patient underwent to emergency laparotomy but died during surgery for cardiac arrest. MDCT allows a prompt recognition of the fistula and different compute…

ANATOMICAL VARIATIONS OF THE SPHENOID SINUS ASSESSED WITH MDCT

2009

Background The aim of this study was to assess the incidence of the anatomical variations of the sphenoid sinus in 293 patients studied by multidetector computed tomography (MDCT). Materials and Methods The MDCT (64 rows) studies of the paranasal sinuses of 293 patients, performed in 2006-2009, were reviewed to assess anatomical variations of the sphenoid sinus and related neurovascular structures. Anatomical variations were evaluated on 1 mm thick MPR reformations, displayed on a high resolution workstation screen. Pneumatization of the anterior clinoid process (ACP), pterygoid recess (PR), protrusion of the internal carotid artery (ICA), optic nerve (ON), maxillary and vidian nerve into t…
