Antibiotic Resistance of Gram Negatives isolates from loggerhead sea turtles (Caretta caretta) in the central Mediterranean Sea
2009
Previous studies on fish and marine mammals support the hypothesis that marine species harbor antibiotic resistance and therefore may serve as reservoirs for anti biotic-resistance genetic determinants. The aim of this study was to assess the resistance to antimicrobial agents of Gram negative strains isolated from loggerhead sea turtles (Caretta caretta). Oral and cloacal swabs from 19 live-stranded loggerhead sea turtles, with hooks fixed into the gut, were analyzed. The antimicrobial resistance of the isolates to 31 antibiotics was assessed using the disk-diffusion method. Conventional biochemical tests identified Citrobacter spp., Proteus spp., Enterobacter spp., Escherichia spp., Provi…
Antitumor effects of curcumin and structurally β-diketone modified analogs on multidrug resistant cancer cells
2007
Abstract Using concepts of bioisostery a series of curcumin analogs were synthesized: the diketonic system of the compound was elaborated into enaminones, oximes, and the isoxazole heterocycle. The cell growth inhibitory and apoptosis inducing effects of the new analogs were evaluated by in vitro assays in the hepatocellular carcinoma HA22T/VGH cells, as well as in the MCF-7 breast cancer cell line and in its multidrug resistant (MDR) variant MCF-7R. Increased antitumor activity on all cell lines was found with the isoxazole analog and especially with the benzyl oxime derivative; in the HA22T/VGH cell model, the latter compound inhibited constitutive NF-κB activation.
Colonizzazione da batteri Gram negativi multi-resistenti in pazienti pediatrici
2017
Composite Scaffolds with a Hydrohyapatite Spatial Gradient for Osteochondral Defect Repair
2018
Osteochondral defects derived by traumatic injury or aging related disease are often associated with severe joint pain and progressive loss of joint functions for millions of people worldwide and represent a major challenge for the orthopedic community. Tissue engineering offers new therapeutic approach to repair the osteochondral defects, through the production of scaffolds manufactured to mimic their complex architecture, which consists of cartilage and bone layers. Composite scaffolds based on a PLLA polymeric matrix containing hydroxyapatite (HA) as a filler were prepared through a modified thermally induced phase separation (TIPS) protocol. A suspension was prepared by adding sieved HA…
Can NF-κB Be Considered a Valid Drug Target in Neoplastic Diseases? Our Point of View
2020
Multidrug resistance (MDR), of the innate and acquired types, is one of major problems in treating tumor diseases with a good chance of success. In this review, we examine the key role of nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-κB) to induce MDR in three tumor models characterized precisely by innate or acquired MDR, in particular triple negative breast cancer (TNBC), hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), and acute myeloid leukemia (AML). We also present different pharmacological approaches that our group have employed to reduce the expression/activation of this transcriptional factor and thus to restore chemo-sensitivity. Finally, we examine the latest scientific evidence found by other groups, the most sign…
Comparison of multidrug-resistant extraintestinal pathogenic Escherichia coli from human, foods and animals to investigate the possible chains of tra…
Background Globally, antimicrobial drug resistant Escherichia coli is the most common etiological agent of invasive disease in humans. In Europe, increasing proportions of infections due to third generation cephalosporins (3GCs) and/or fluoroquinolone resistant extraintestinal pathogenic E. coli (ExPEC) strains are reported. It has been shown that multidrug resistant (MDR) E. coli can be transmitted from animals to humans and based on existing evidence, poultry is the food animal source most closely linked to human E. coli. However, lack of reliable data makes it difficult to assess the attributable risk of different food sources and their impact on human health. Objectives In the present s…
MOLECULAR CHARACTERIZATION OF MULTIDRUG-RESISTANT E. COLI ISOLATED FROM BACTEREMIA PATIENTS
2014
Background: Extraintestinal pathogenic Escherichia coli (ExPEC) bacteria have the ability to cause diverse and serious diseases, such as urinary tract infections (UTIs) and bacteremia; incidence of bacteremia is increasing globally. The emergence of multidrug resistance in E. coli is also becoming a global concern, with particular emphasis on E. coli sequence type (ST) 131, which is being increasingly reported in UTIs. Drug resistance is mediated by extended- spectrum β-lactamases (ESBLs), mainly of the CTX-M family, particularly CTX-M-15, and less frequently of the SHV and OXA families. Few studies are available regarding the characterization of E. coli strains causing bacteremia. Methods:…

K. PNEUMONIAE E A. BAUMANNII PRODUTTORI DI CARBAPENEMASE. INCIDENZA, FATTORI DI RISCHIO ED IMPATTO SULL’OUTCOME
2013
Obiettivo.
Does P-glycoprotein-170 expression predict for chemoresistance in transitional cell carcinoma of the bladder?
2003
Introduction: The glycoprotein P-170, causing drug efflux from the cells, may represent at least one cause of resistance to most drugs used in intravesical chemotherapy of superficial bladder cancer. Materials and Methods: GP-170 was retrospectively assessed in 60 patients affected by superficial transitional cell tumours of the bladder. It was assessed by immunohistochemistry in a semiquantitative way by the intensity of staining and by the percentage of positive cells. Correlation of GP-170 expression with G-grade, T-category, multiplicity, recurrence rate and treatment was investigated. In 44 patients recurrence was analysed in relation to GP-170 basal expression and to its variations. T…
