Validity and reliability of the motivation for physical activity (RM4-FM) questionnaire

2021

There is a lack of validated instruments measuring motivation for physical activity (RM4-FM) in the Finnish language. The study examined the translated RM4-FM instrument’s psychometric properties in a sample of healthy, older Finnish adults. RM4-FM was translated and linguistically validated adhering to published guidelines. 65–75-year olds (n=102), completed the RM4-FM, the physical activity acceptance questionnaire (PAAQ) and sociodemographic characteristics questionnaires electronically. The RM4-FM was readministered one month after the initial assessment. RM4-FM translated well into Finnish. Motivation dimension scores were skewed towards high internal and low external motivation. A flo…

Balance Perturbations as a Measurement Tool for Trunk Impairment in Cross-Country Sit Skiing

2018

In cross-country sit-skiing, the trunk plays a crucial role in propulsion generation and balance maintenance. Trunk stability is evaluated by automatic responses to unpredictable perturbations; however, electromyography is challenging. The aim of this study was to identify a measure to group sit-skiers according to their ability to control the trunk. Seated in their competitive sit-ski, 10 male and 5 female Paralympic sit-skiers received 6 forward and 6 backward unpredictable perturbations in random order. k-means clustered trunk position at rest, delay to invert the trunk motion, and trunk range of motion significantly into 2 groups. In conclusion, unpredictable perturbations might quantif…

Long-term home-based physiotherapy for persons with signs of frailty–RCT (NCT02305433)

2018

Introduction/Background Frailty is a multidimensional condition, which can lead to disability. To postpone long-term care, one alternative is home-based physiotherapy. We study the effects of a 12-month home-based physiotherapy program on functional capacity, and applying successive 12-month register follow-up, on the use and costs of social and health care services, and on the duration of living at home during 24 months (the primary outcome). Here we report about feasibility of the intervention and baseline characteristics. Material and method Three hundred home-dwelling persons (>65 y) with signs of frailty were recruited by September, 2016. Frailty was screened by Morley's FRAIL question…

Systemic Risk in a Structural Model of Bank Default Linkages

2018

Abstract We study a structural model of individual bank defaults across the banking sector; banks are interconnected through their exposure to a common risk factor. The paper introduces a systemic risk measure based on the default frequency in the banking sector; this measure depends non-linearly on the factor's loadings, in contrast to previous systemic risk measures that depend linearly on loadings. We estimate loadings in the U.S. banking system over the course of the last 36 years; we find that they have considerably increased over time and identify four major regimes. Our measure shows that systemic risk became critical in the last of our four regimes, covering the most recent time per…

Further Evidence for Criterion Validity and Measurement Invariance of the Luxembourg Workplace Mobbing Scale

2020

Abstract. Workplace mobbing has various negative consequences for targeted individuals and are costly to organizations. At present it is debated whether gender, age, or occupation are potential risk factors. However, empirical data remain inconclusive as measures of workplace mobbing so far lack of measurement invariance (MI) testing – a prerequisite for meaningful manifest between-group comparisons. To close this research gap, the present study sought to further elucidate MI of the recently developed brief Luxembourg Workplace Mobbing Scale (LWMS; Steffgen, Sischka, Schmidt, Kohl, & Happ, 2016 ) across gender, age, and occupational groups and to test whether these factors represent im…

Place and space in home-making processes and the construction of identities in transnational migration

2016

AbstractIn this era of increasing migration and the trend of growing social, political, and cultural integration worldwide, it is questionable whether the concept of home in its traditional meaning still applies or has to be redefined. Many social scientists agree that the mobile individual of the twenty-first century has become uprooted and thus disoriented or that the idea of home has lost its significance. Since home is still closely tied to one’s identity, the current discussions on the construction of identity must also be incorporated in the analytical processes of home-making. The objective is to point out new ways of understanding the idea of home by taking into consideration and an…

Can meaning buffer work pressure? An exploratory study on styles of meaning in life and burnout in firefighters

2016

Aim of the studyThe purpose of this study is to examine the relationships between different dimensions of meaning in life and burnout among firefighters. The relationships between personal meaning, presence of meaning, search for meaning, and burnout are to be examined. In addition, the differences in the firefighters’ level of burnout are to be evaluated within three styles of meaning in life.Subject or material and methodsParticipants were 189 Polish firefighters who participated in the study voluntarily. The age ranged from 20 to 50 years and the mean age was 33.04 years (SD = 7.87). The participants were randomly recruited from twelve fire stations located in southern parts of Poland. T…

Effect of self-determined motivation in physical education on objectively measured habitual physical activity

2019

Grounded in the trans-contextual model, the purpose of the present study was to examine the role of self-determined motivation in Physical Education (PE) on self-determined motivation in Physical Activity (PA), PA intention, and accelerometer-measured habitual PA behavior among high-school aged adolescents. A sample of 394 Spanish high-school students (211 males and 183 females; aged 12-16 years) participated in the present study. The outcome measure of PA was established using accelerometry, whereas motivation toward PA and PE as well as PA intention were measured using validated questionnaires. Path analyses supported in part the central propositions of the trans-contextual model. Self-de…

Assessment of learning strategies with the ACRA and the Brief-ACRA scales: Competitive models, measurement invariance, and prediction of academic ach…

2021

Abstract Learning strategies have been widely studied, and they have been related to academic achievement in several studies. Among the measurement instruments developed, the 44-item version of the Learning Strategies Scale (ACRA) is, by far, one of the most widely used questionnaires in the Spanish speaking context. This instrument has been recently shortened to a 17-item version. Neither the 44-item nor the 17-item version have been tested in the Dominican Republic. The aim of this study is to study the psychometric properties of the 44-item and 17-item versions of the ACRA. Participants were 1712 Dominican secondary school students. Both structures of the ACRA were tested via CFA; alpha …
