After describing the evolution of mortality from ischaemic cardiopathy (IC) in Spain from 1951 to 1986, which is tending to stabilize in some age groups, and from cerebrovascular accidents (CVA), which is clearly declining, an attempt is made to relate these developments to the prevalence of the main risk factors (hypertension, cholesterol, tobacco) associated with IC and CVA. Long-term followup of buccal mucosa onlay graft for hypospadias repair: analysis of complications.

We review the long-term results of buccal mucosa onlay grafting for urethral reconstruction in hypospadias surgery in patients with followup of at least 5 years.We retrospectively evaluated 132 patients who underwent buccal mucosa onlay graft for hypospadias repair, including 34 who underwent "salvage" grafting, during a 10-year period at our institution. In 49 cases with available followup longer than 5 years (average 6.2) complications were analyzed in detail.The overall complication rate was 24% (12 of 49 patients), with all but 3 complications occurring during the first postoperative year (3 fistulas, 1 stricture, 1 meatal stenosis, 2 graft contractures, 2 scars at oral harvesting site)…

Polybrominated diphenyl ethers in foods from the Region of Valencia: Dietary exposure and risk assessment

Abstract Dietary exposure to polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) of the population in the Region of Valencia, Spain, was assessed. A group of 320 composite samples of different fatty foods was collected and analyzed, including the following: vegetable oils, and foods of animal origin such as (a) fish and seafood, (b) eggs, (c) milk and dairy products, and (d) meat and meat products. Two scenarios were assumed for left-censored results: lower-bound (LB) and upper-bound (UB). The mechanism underlying propylene glycol (PG) effects on acyclovir (ACV) penetration through human epidermis were studied. Solvent systems and Carbopol gels containing increasing percentage of PG (from 0% to 70%, w/w) were used. Viscosity studies of both vehicles were carried out to characterise the influence of rheological behaviour. In solvent systems skin permeation values of ACV increase as the concentration of PG increase yielding a maximum enhancement ratio (ER = 10) for 70% PG. The release rate of ACV from gels was determined. Higuchi's model was used to estimate the apparent diffusion coefficient of the drug. Background: To offer data on the relationship between diet and risk of pelvic endometriosis, we analysed data collected in the framework of two case-control studies. Methods: Data from two case-control studies conducted in Northern Italy between 1984 and 1999 were combined. Cases were 504 women aged < 65 years (median age 33 years, range 20-65) with a laparoscopically confirmed diagnosis of endometriosis, admitted to a network of obstetrics and gynaecology departments in Milan, Brescia and Pavia. Abstract Harbor seal blubber samples were analyzed for PCDD/Fs and PCBs by splitting the initial extract into three aliquots and applying three different techniques for lipid removal (the first step of sample cleanup methodology for GC-HRMS analysis): gel permeation chromatography (GPC), sulfuric acid treatment, and dialysis through semipermeable membrane. Correlation coefficients of analyte concentrations obtained from three sets of replicate samples ranged from 0.965 to 0.994.
