In isolated rat aortic strips noradrenaline induces a biphasic contractile response in Ca-free medium, associated with two different intracellular calcium pools, one of which is common to caffeine. We analyzed the mechanisms involved in the depletion and repletion of both intracellular Ca pools sensitive to noradrenaline in different experimental procedures in presence of prazosin, phentolamine and yohimbine. Background We recently reported that endothelium-dependent relaxation is impaired in forearm veins from patients with chronic renal failure. However, assessment of responses to norepinephrine remains controversial. We examined the contractile response to norepinephrine in forearm veins from patients on chronic hemodialysis and the role of nitric oxide (NO), prostanoids, and Ca 2+ -activated K + channels in this response. To test whether Schirmer test (ST) results are associated with topical or systemic medication and to evaluate the distribution of tear fluid quantity in a 3-min and 5-min ST.The Gutenberg Health Study is a population-based, prospective, observational cohort study in Germany. ST was assessed in a sub-cohort of 1,999 participants. ST was performed under topical anesthesia for 5 min (ST-5) or of 3 min (ST-3). Anthropometric factors, systemic diseases, use of systemic and eye medications were recorded.
