Is karate effective in improving postural control?

2012

Background: Performing complex motor skills, such as the ones performed by karate athletes, requires a great sense of balance. Because the posturo-kinetic performance seems to be improved by sport practice, especially by sports involving a lot of posturokinetic activities, the aim of this review was to critically analyse the scientific literature in order to appraise whether any positive correlation between karate and improved postural control is scientifically supported. Material/Methods: The online search engines Scirus and Medline were used for generating the data. A comprehensive literature search was conducted based on the following keywords: “karate”, “postural control” and “body sway…

Psychosocial Risk Factors for Overuse Injuries in Competitive Athletes: A Mixed-Studies Systematic Review

2021

Abstract Background While the psychosocial risk factors for traumatic injuries have been comprehensively investigated, less is known about psychosocial factors predisposing athletes to overuse injuries. Objective The aim of this review was to systematically identify studies and synthesise data that examined psychosocial risk factors for overuse injuries in athletes. Design Systematic review. Data Sources MEDLINE, Web of Science and PsycINFO databases, supplemented by hand searching of journals and reference lists. Eligibility Criteria for Selecting Studies Quantitative and qualitative studies involving competitive athletes, published prior to July 2021, and reporting the relationship betwee…

Markers for gastric cancer premalignant lesions: where do we go?

2012

Only a small proportion of patients infected with Helicobacter pylori develop gastric cancer during their lifetime. At the same time, this type of cancer remains an important cause of mortality globally. The current interventional strategies have not been successful in decreasing the global burden of the disease; therefore, biomarkers for the identification of the individuals at high risk as well as those in the early stage of the disease is of high importance. In addition, predicting the point of no return for the development of the malignancy is of particular interest; whether atrophy, intestinal or spasmolytic polypeptide-expressing metaplasia, or some of their subtype…

Opioid less perioperative care.

2017

Opioids are the most frequently administered analgesics in the perioperative period. The analgesic potency of opioids is without question. While the opioid- free or opioid-less perioperative care concept is not a reality in most surgical centers of the United States and other developed countries, there is a significant number of healthcare problems (i.e. adverse events, opioid-induced hyperalgesia and opioid diversion) related to the indiscriminate use of opioids that warrants the implementation of multimodal analgesia strategies. Although it has been suggested an association between the use of opioids and cancer progression, there is a need of well-designed studies to confirm that associat…

Breakthrough pain in cancer patients

2015

The aim of this article was to examine the definition, the characteristics, and the management of breakthrough cancer pain (BTP) in cancer patients by a critical review of recent literature.BTP should be more correctly defined as an episode of severe intensity in patients receiving an adequate treatment with opioids able to provide at least mild analgesia. BTP is a heterogeneous condition as episodes vary between individuals. BTP can be classified into two big distinct pictures: spontaneous-type and incident-type pain. The principal pharmacological treatment of BTP is represented by the administration of opioids as needed. Recent reviews revealed that transmucosal preparation of fentanyl pr…

Comparing the use of patient-reported outcomes in clinical studies in Europe in 2008 and 2018: a literature review

2021

Abstract Purpose Several guidelines for the use of patient-reported outcomes (PROs) in clinical studies have been published in the past decade. This review primarily aimed to compare the number and compliance with selected PRO-specific criteria for reporting of clinical studies in Europe using PROs published in 2008 and 2018. Secondarily, to describe the study designs, PRO instruments used, patient groups studied, and countries where the clinical studies were conducted. Methods A literature search was conducted in MEDLINE to identify eligible publications. To assess the number of publications, all abstracts were screened for eligibility by pairs of reviewers. Compliance with PRO-specific cr…

Triage assessment of registered nurses in the emergency department

2013

Standardised triage systems have been implemented in emergency departments (EDs) to improve the efficacy of assessment strategies as performed by registered nurses (RNs). However, the exact effect the standardised triage systems have on the decision-making process remains unclear.Aim: To evaluate decision making in the triage setting before and after implementation of the Medical Emergency Triage and Treatment System Adult in one hospital's ED.Methods: A descriptive intervention design with a quantitative approach. A total of 655 patients before and 413 patients after the intervention were included. A questionnaire was used to evaluate how the RNs assessed the patients before intervention w…

The atraumatic restorative treatment approach: an "atraumatic" alternative.

2009

Introduction: Fear and anxiety are part of all human experiences and they may contribute directly to a patient?s behavior. The Atraumatic Restorative Treatment (ART) is a technique that may be an alternative approach in treating special care patients or those who suffer fear or anxiety. Objective: the aim of this paper is to review the ART technique as an alternative to reduce pain and fear during dental treatment. Materials and method: A search for the term ?atraumatic restorative treatment? was carried out in the MEDLINE search engine. References, from the last 10 years, containing at least one of the terms: ?psychological aspects?, ?discomfort?, ?fear?, ?anxiety? or ?pain?, were selected…
