Construction of quality of life change patterns: example in oncology in a phase III therapeutic trial (FFCD 0307)

2015

Objective Quality of life data in cancerology are often difficult to summarize due to missing data and difficulty to analyze the pattern of evolution in different groups of patients. The aim of this work was to apply a new methodology to construct Quality of Life (QoL) change patterns within patients included in a clinical trial comparing to regimen of treatment in locally advanced eosogastric cancer. Materials and methods In this trial, QoL was assessed every 2 months by self-reported EORTC QLQ-C30 questionnaire. Physical dimension scores were analyzed. After multiple imputation of missing data, 27 statistical measures aiming to describe the variation of QoL measures among follow-up were c…

Health-related quality of life in epilepsy: findings obtained with a new Italian instrument

2008

The aim of the present study was to evaluate the Epi-QoL, a new Italian-specific measure of health-related quality of life (HRQOL) for adults with epilepsy; the clinical variables that affected the HRQOL score were also assessed. The Epi-QoL is a 46-item self-administered questionnaire focusing on six domains: Physical Functioning, Cognitive Functioning, Emotional Well-Being, Social Functioning, Seizure Worry, and Medication Effects. Eight hundred fifteen patients recruited from 24 secondary and tertiary Italian centers for the care of epilepsy were assessed. The results supported the reliability and validity of the Epi-QoL as a measure of HRQOL. The variables that significantly affected HR…

Haematopoietic stem cell transplantation for vasculitis including Behçet's disease and polychondritis: a retrospective analysis of patients recorded …

2006

Objective: To evaluate the feasibility of haematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) in vasculitis. Methods: This is a retrospective analysis of patients who had received HSCT for vasculitic diseases and have been reported to the European League Against Rheumatism autoimmune disease or European Bone Marrow Transplantation ProMISe databases. Information about the disease and outcome was obtained by a questionnaire sent to the referring centres. Response of the disease to HSCT was defined as partial or complete responses according to the ability to reduce immunosuppression after HSCT. In addition, the Medline database was searched for reports on HSCT in patients with vasculitis. Results:…

Controlled and uncontrolled allergic asthma in routine respiratory specialist care – a clinical–epidemiological study in Germany

2011

Studies in the last decade showed high rates of poorly treated and poorly controlled asthma in the community. Extending these findings we describe the more recent situation in specialist respiratory care as the most frequent source of treatment provision using comprehensive clinical and patient assessments and exploring predictors for poor control. This is a German cross-sectional, clinical epidemiological study in a nationally representative stratified treatment prevalence sample of N = 572 outpatients diagnosed with allergic asthma (AA; females 58.2%, aged 47.5 ± 16.3 (16-81 years). Treating physicians completed standardized clinical assessments (lung function, laboratory, clinical finding…

Clinical Perspective on Antihypertensive Drug Treatment in Adults With Grade 1 Hypertension and Low-to-Moderate Cardiovascular Risk:An International …

2017

Hypertension is a leading risk factor for disease burden globally. An unresolved question is whether grade 1 hypertension (140-159/90-99. mm. Hg) with low (cardiovascular mortality <1% at 10 years) to moderate (cardiovascular mortality ≥1% and <5% at 10 years) absolute total cardiovascular risk (CVR) should be treated with antihypertensive agents. A virtual international consultation process was undertaken to summarize the opinions of select experts. After holistic analysis of all epidemiological, clinical, psychosocial, and public health elements, this consultation process reached the following consensus in hypertensive adults aged <80 years: (1) The question of whether drug treat…

Oral diseases: a 14-year experience of a Chilean institution with a systematic review from eight countries.

2017

ABSTRACTBACKGROUNDRetrospective studies to assess the distribution of oral diseases (ODs) are helpful in estimating the prevalence of oral diagnoses in the population, and thus help in preventive and curative services. Prevalence and frequency data for ODs are available from many countries, but information from Chile is scarce.METHODSThis study investigated the frequency of ODs in a Chilean population. For this, we included all patients treated at the University of Talca (UTALCA, Chile) between 2001 and 2014. Patient characteristics were retrieved from medical files. To contextualize our results, we conducted a systematic review (SystRev) using Publish or Perish software (PoP), Google Schol…

Specific allergen immunotherapy for the treatment of allergic asthma: a review of current evidence.

2017

Asthma is frequently associated with atopy, characterized by the production of specific immunoglobulin E in response to environmental allergens. Currently, two types of allergen immunotherapy (AIT) are used in clinical practice: subcutaneous and sublingual immunotherapy, both accepted as key components of the therapeutic repertoire for allergic rhinitis and conjunctivitis. However, their role in asthma remains controversial. The present document is aimed at providing the clinicians with a review of the evidence on the use of AIT in asthma, focusing on the most relevant aspects of its mechanism of action, its efficacy, and existing data on safety, tolerability, and cost-effectivity, both in …

Increased frequency of migraine in narcoleptic patients

1999

We explored the relationship between narcolepsy and different types of headaches. We interviewed 68 patients with idiopathic narcolepsy for the presence of headache symptoms based on the criteria of the International Headache Society (IHS). Eighty-one percent of the patients reported headaches that warranted an IHS headache diagnosis. Fifty-four percent of the patients (64% women, 35% men) had migraine with all IHS criteria fulfilled.

An Internet-Based Self-Help Treatment for Fear of Public Speaking: A Controlled Trial

2010

Abstract This study offers data about the efficacy of “Talk to Me,” an Internet-based telepsychology program for the treatment of fear of public speaking that includes the most active components in cognitive-behavior therapy (CBT) for social phobia (exposure and cognitive therapies). One hundred twenty-seven participants with social phobia were randomly assigned to three experimental conditions: (a) an Internet-based self-administered program; (b) the same program applied by a therapist; (c) a waiting-list control group. Results showed that both treatment conditions were equally efficacious. In addition, Talk to Me and the same treatment applied by a therapist were more efficacious than the…
