Effects of exercise training on airway closure in asthmatics
2012
We previously reported that responsiveness to methacholine (Mch) in the absence of deep inspiration (DI) decreased in healthy subjects after a short course of exercise training. We assessed whether a similar beneficial effect of exercise on airway responsiveness could occur in asthmatics. Nine patients (male/female: 3/6; mean age ± SD: 24 ± 2 yr) with mild untreated asthma [forced expiratory volume in 1 s (FEV1): 100 ± 7.4% pred; FEV1/vital capacity (VC): 90 ± 6.5%] underwent a series of single-dose Mch bronchoprovocations in the absence of DI in the course of a 10-wk training rowing program (6 h/wk of submaximal and maximal exercise), at baseline ( week 0), and at week 5 and 10. The singl…

Diagnosing ICD-10 depressive episodes: superior criterion validity of the Patient Health Questionnaire.
2004
Background: Diagnosing and monitoring depression in primary care remains an issue of significant public health concern. Clinicians and researchers need to know if any one screening instrument is superior to the others in diagnosing ICD-10 depressive episodes. This study aimed to examine the criterion validity for diagnosing ICD-10 depressive episodes of the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ) in comparison with 2 well-established instruments, the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS), and the WHO Well-Being Index 5 (WBI-5). Methods: Five hundred and one medical outpatients completed the questionnaires and had a clinical interview. The presence of …
Odontogenic myxofibroma: a concise review of the literature with emphasis on the surgical approach
2014

Patients' experiences of shoulder problems prior to and following intervention.
2011
Health can be viewed from several perspectives. It has been shown that impingement of the shoulder leads to functional inability and decreased life quality. The aim of this study was to investigate the complexity of the effect of shoulder problems and discern and describe what it entails to be a patient suffering from shoulder problems. The study delineated patients' situations prior to and following medical intervention. This study is qualitative, and the data were collected through focus group interviews. Interviews with 26 respondents aged 43-63 (mean age 53) were made in 2005-2007. The sample group consisted of patients with supraspinatus tendinitis receiving either conservative treatme…

Prevalence and treatment of cancer pain in Italian oncological wards centres: a cross-sectional survey.
2008
The aim of this national cross-sectional survey was to draw information on pain prevalence and intensity from a large sample of patients who were admitted to oncologic centres for different reasons and to evaluate the pain treatment and possible influencing factors.A total of 2,655 patients completed the study. Nine hundred and one patients (34%) reported pain.Higher pain levels were observed in inpatients, in the presence of bone metastases, and with low levels of Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group status. The number of patients receiving strong opioids increased with the highest levels of pain. However, a significant part of patients with moderate-severe pain were not receiving appropriat…

A short message service (SMS)-based strategy for enhancing adherence to antipsychotic medication in schizophrenia
2012
Abstract Background The aim of this study was to assess the impact of a short message service (SMS)-based strategy on adherence to antipsychotic treatment. Methods A multicentre, randomised, open-label, controlled, 6-month study with clinically stabilised outpatients with schizophrenia was conducted. The patients assigned to the intervention received daily SMS reminders to take their medication for 3 months. Self-reported medication adherence was determined using the Morisky Green Adherence Questionnaire (MAQ). Secondary outcomes were severity of illness, attitude towards medication, insight into illness and health-related quality of life. Results A total of 254 patients were analysed. A si…
Relationship of drug-addicted patients' personality disorders to social problem-solving changes during the rehabilitation process.
2012
Drug-addicted patients exhibit various personality disorders that interfere with their adaptation to society, as well as their ability to participate in the rehabilitation process.
